Abstract

Menstrual cycle disorders are a prevalent health issue among adolescent girls and may be influenced by lifestyle factors and nutritional status. This study aimed to examine the association between allowance, breakfast habits, energy adequacy, protein adequacy, fat adequacy, and nutritional status with menstrual cycle disorders among female students at SMAN 1 Ngamprah. A cross-sectional analytical survey was conducted involving 90 students selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires, 2×24-hour dietary recalls, and anthropometric measurements. The study found a higher prevalence of menstrual cycle disorders among students with above-average allowances, regular breakfast habits, and insufficient intake of energy, protein, and fat. These disorders were also more common in students experiencing both undernutrition and overnutrition. The study concludes that economic factors and nutritional intake are significantly associated with menstrual cycle regularity. Educational interventions promoting balanced diets and effective financial management are recommended as prevention strategies for menstrual cycle disorders among adolescents.

Abstract

Background : Maternal underweight impacts pregnancy outcomes, including low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth, miscarriage, bleeding during labor, and even maternal death, making early detection of maternal underweight essential. The threshold of MUAC ≤23.5 cm has traditionally been used as a predictor for Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in women of reproductive age (WRA), but its sensitivity and specificity in pregnant women remain unknown. Therefore, research is needed to enable early detection of underweight in pregnant women. Objective : This study aims to assess the sensitivity and specificity of MUAC using ROC analysis to detect underweight in pregnant women. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : The design of this quantitative study was crosssectional study. The subjects were 118 pregnant women which selected by a total sampling technique in the Cidadap District of Bandung City. Results : ROC analysis indicated that pregnant women with a MUAC cut-off of ≤21.45 cm can be classified as underweight, with an AUC value of 86.6%, sensitivity of 82.5%, and specificity of 75%. Based on the identified cut-off point, the prevalence of underweight among pregnant women was 22.7%. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : MUAC measurement is a reliable predictor of underweight in pregnant women, demonstrating good sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, a MUAC threshold of ≤21.45 cm is recommended for healthcare providers in Bandung City to detect the risk of underweight in pregnant women.

Abstract

Preconception nutritional preparedness is crucial to support a healthy pregnancy and prevent fetal growth disorders. In Indonesia, many prospective couples lack adequate understanding of this, making audiovisual-based nutrition education a promising approach; however, its effectiveness still requires further evaluation. This community service aimed to improve nutritional knowledge of prospective brides and grooms through a Communication, Information, and Education (CIE) approach using audiovisual media. The intervention was conducted at the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) in Sukajadi Subdistrict, Bandung City, involving 74 prospective couples selected through accidental sampling. A 9-minute video containing information on nutritional needs, preconception issues, and recommended intake served as the educational tool. Evaluation used a one-group pretest–posttest design with a validated and reliable questionnaire. The analysis showed a significant increase in knowledge scores after the intervention (N-Gain = 0.44; moderate category). These results suggest that audiovisual-based CIE effectively enhances understanding of preconception nutrition in an engaging and accessible manner. However, the lack of a control group limits the interpretation of the findings. This activity supports audiovisual media as an alternative strategy for preconception nutrition education to enhance readiness for marriage and pregnancy.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) negatively impacts maternal and fetal health, causing risks such as low birth weight and impaired fetal growth. Key contributors include inadequate nutrient intake and limited household food availability. To assess the relationship between nutrient adequacy and household food availability with CED risk in pregnant women at Pataruman Health Center. A cross-sectional study involved 60 pregnant women from Citapen Village selected by simple random sampling. Independent variables were nutrient adequacy (energy, protein, carbohydrate intake) and household food availability, with CED incidence as the dependent variable. Data were collected via questionnaires and anthropometric measurements and analyzed using multiple logistic regression. Normal pre-pregnancy BMI significantly reduced CED risk (OR = 0.14; 95% CI: 0.03–0.77; p = 0.020). Adequate energy intake lowered CED risk by 93% (OR = 0.07; 95% CI: 0.01–0.53; p = 0.005), and sufficient protein intake also provided protection (OR = 0.26; 95% CI: 0.08–0.84; p = 0.005). Food-secure households showed lower CED risk (OR = 0.08; 95% CI: 0.02–0.40; p = 0.001). Carbohydrate adequacy was not significantly associated with CED (OR = 2.6; 95% CI: 0.4–11.7; p = 0.230) but acted as a confounder. No significant interaction effects were found among variables. Adequate pre-pregnancy BMI, energy and protein intake, and household food security protect against CED. Carbohydrate intake should be accounted for as a confounding factor. These findings support integrated nutrition and food security interventions to enhance maternal health.

Abstract

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent a frequent occupational health issue arising from mechanical stress, particularly repetitive lifting and long periods of standing. These conditions are especially prevalent among workers performing strenuous manual tasks, such as porters. Initial observations at Bandung Railway Station revealed recurring shoulder and calf discomfort reported by porters, suggesting the need to investigate whether nutritional intake, nutritional status, and lifestyle behaviors contribute to these complaints. This research sought to determine the association between nutrient consumption, nutritional status, lifestyle factors, and musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) symptoms among porters at Bandung Railway Station. The study utilized a quantitative design with a cross-sectional framework. All 67 porters at the station were included through total sampling. Data were gathered through structured interviews using validated tools: the Nordic Body Map to identify MSD symptoms; a 24-hour dietary recall to quantify macro and micronutrient intake; the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep patterns; and anthropometric measurements to determine body mass index (BMI). Data analysis showed that sleep quality was the dominant factor (p-value = 0,002), with a 59,6% MSDs prevalence in poor sleepers versus 5% in good sleepers. Carbohydrate intake was also significant (p-value = 0,033), where adequate intake surprisingly recorded higher MSDs (59,3%) than deficient intake (32,5%); thus, MSDs in this study are primarily driven by poor sleep and suboptimal carbohydrate intake.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a public health issue that remains a serious concern in Indonesia, including in West Bandung Regency, where the prevalence was 26.90% in 2022. This condition not only reflects physical growth disorders but also poses risks to children's cognitive development and future productivity. Purpose: This study aims to identify factors associated with stunting in toddlers in Tanimulya Village, West Bandung Regency. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 83 toddlers and their parents selected through cluster random sampling. The study included children aged 6–24 months living in Tanimulya Village, excluding those with genetic disorders or chronic illnesses. Data were collected using questionnaires, WHO-standard anthropometric measurements, and 24-hour food recall, and analyzed using multivariate logistic regression with SPSS 21. Results: Of 83 toddlers, 43 were classified as stunted. Further analysis revealed that protein intake (OR: 5.14), parental role (OR: 0.35), and history of infection (OR: 0.47) were significantly associated with stunting. Multivariate analysis identified protein intake as the dominant factor influencing stunting among toddlers. Conclusion: These findings indicate that stunting prevention efforts should focus on nutrition education for families, increased parental involvement in childcare, and regular monitoring of child growth.

Abstract

Background : Freelance Make Up Artists (MUAs) in West Java work irregular hours, often starting before dawn or finishing late at night, disrupting circadian rhythms and leading to sleep problems. Working in the informal creative sector also means they lack occupational health protection. Early symptoms of shift-work sleep disorder, physical fatigue, and psychological stress are common, yet limited research explores sleep quality within this profession. Understanding their sleep problems and coping patterns is essential to support MUAs’ well-being and the sustainability of the creative industry. Objective : To explore MUAs’ sleep duration, frequency of sleep disturbances, fatigue-related impacts on performance, and adaptive strategies used to cope with occupational stress. Research Methods / Implementation Methods : This qualitative phenomenological study involved eight freelance MUAs selected purposively, all with at least two years of experience and irregular work schedules. Research was conducted in several West Java regions (Bandung, Tasikmalaya, Subang, Garut) from May–July 2025. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation. All interviews were recorded with consent and analyzed thematically using NVivo 12 Pro. Results : MUAs experienced markedly irregular sleep patterns driven by client demands, especially during early-morning traditional wedding bookings. Most reported fragmented sleep, short sleep duration, transient insomnia, and chronic fatigue. Physical complaints included headaches, muscle pain, and menstrual disturbances. Psychologically, MUAs described irritability, emotional instability, and reduced concentration. Emotional strain was aggravated by the dual burden of professional work and home responsibilities. Coping strategies such as napping, caffeine intake, and selectively declining clients were common but only offered short-term relief. Long-term health concerns were frequently expressed, along with a desire for time-management guidance, occupational health education, and community support. The absence of formal protections for informal creative workers worsens their vulnerability despite the sector’s economic growth. Conclusion / Lesson Learned : Freelance MUAs in West Java face significant sleep disruptions and related health impacts due to irregular work hours and lack of occupational safeguards. Their coping strategies are temporary and do not address structural challenges. Cross-sector collaboration involving government, community groups,
