Abstract

Background: Association with levels of social support and physical activity, which play a role in adolescents’ future health. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the associations between ACEs, social support, Body Mass Index (BMI), and physical activity among adolescents in Samarinda, Indonesia.Method: A sample of 246 participants completed an online self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and chi-square tests were used to explore associations among variables. Mediation and moderation analyses were conducted using the PROCESS macro.Result: The findings revealed that ACEs were negatively associated with perceived social support (β = -0.1949, p < 0.001) and positively associated with physical activity (β = 0.0834, p = 0.0062). Perceived social support was negatively associated with physical activity (β = -0.2002, p = 0.0004) and partially mediated the relationship between ACEs and physical activity, with a significant indirect effect (β = 0.0390, 95% CI [0.0156, 0.0675]). The moderated mediation analysis revealed that BMI did not significantly moderate the direct or indirect effects, although the indirect pathway remained significant across different levels of BMI. The study demonstrated that perceived social support partially mediated the relationship between ACEs and physical activity. This mediation pathway remained significant regardless of BMI level, while BMI did not show a moderating effect. Conclusion these findings suggest that social support partially explains how ACEs influence physical activity, regardless of BMI.

Abstract

Smoking activities in the house are still common among families in Indonesia. This behavior can reduce the quality of family members' health, and the smoke produced from smoking activities for a while can affect the quality of the physical environment in the house. The low knowledge of family members regarding the dangers of cigarette smoke is one of the factors causing delays in efforts to reduce exposure to cigarette smoke at the household level. Housewives have an important role in fighting indoor cigarette smoke. This activity aims to increase the role of mothers in fighting cigarette smoke, especially by increasing knowledge about the dangers of cigarette smoke and effective communication with the family.  The methods of implementing activities, include: 1) planning stages through community surveys to get an overview of the problem, 2) preparation with community leaders in preparing educational agendas and games, 3) implementation of activities by using power point media and flipcharts, and ranking 1 game which is used as the pretest process, and the final stage is, 4) evaluation of results by looking at the results of the pretest and posttest as well as process evaluation. The results of the activity obtained were an increase in the mother's knowledge regarding the dangers of cigarette smoke at home with an increase in the average pretest and posttest scores of the participants. The aspect of increased knowledge is that cigarette smoke cannot be described quickly in the house, because cigarette particles will stick to the surfaces of objects in the house for 4-6 hours. The limitations of the activity, there were a few technical obstacles to educational facilities and the psychological unpreparedness of some participants which were resulting in a lack of focus in discussion. Further research on the impact of smoking in the home still needs to determine the quality of health at the family level, and educational interventions based on behavior change are also needed for the primary target (active smokers) to create a smoke-free home at community level.

Abstract

Posyandu Merah Delima is an infant and toddler posyandu located in Lok Bahu Village, Samarinda City. After conducting a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) method, it was found that the problem of low compliance of mothers of infants and toddlers in bringing Maternal and Child Health (MCH) books and low participation during posyandu activities took place. To overcome this problem, cadres were empowered through training in the use of digital technology with a focus on making alternative MCH book forms using Canva and Microsoft Word applications and training in the Google Calendar application as a reminder for posyandu visits. The results showed an increase in knowledge and skills of posyandu cadres in making forms and reminder media using modern digital technology. The program also succeeded in encouraging the active involvement of cadres in planning and implementing activities, and strengthening the role of posyandu as a means of supporting the health of children under five in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents is a vulnerable age group susceptible to mental health issues, particularly psychological distress, which includes symptoms of depression and anxiety. While physical activity is known to benefit mental health, its direct relationship with psychological distress in adolescents has shown inconsistent findings. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between physical activity levels and psychological distress in adolescents. Method: A cross-sectional design, involving 386 students from three high schools in East Kalimantan. Data were collected using questionnaires, adopting the Kessler Psychological distress Scale (K10) and the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). Results: The majority of respondents (88.6%) were categorized as having high physical activity. Analysis revealed no significant association between physical activity levels and psychological distress (p = 0.802; OR = 1.141; 95% CI: 0.609–2.140). However, these results indicated a non-significant trend towards an increased risk of distress in the low physical activity group. Conclusion: No significant association was found between physical activity levels and psychological distress in adolescents. Nevertheless, a notable proportion of adolescents with low physical activity remains, warranting attention. Interventions to promote physical activity are still important. Keyword: Adolescents; Physical Activity; Psychological Distress.

Abstract

Background: Inappropriate consumption patterns among adolescents increase chronic disease risk later in life, potentially influenced by psychosocial factors. This study analyzed relationships between psychosocial factors and consumption patterns among high school students in the NCC buffer area. Purpose: To examine the relationship between psychosocial and consumption in high school adolescents in NCC buffer area Method: Using a cross-sectional design, 386 high school students were selected through proportional random sampling. Data collection employed the Kessler questionnaire for psychological distress, and questionnaires measuring family and peer support, family mental health influence, school support, and consumption patterns. Chi-square tests analyzed bivariate relationships with significance at p < 0.05. Results: Results showed no significant relationships between consumption patterns and psychological distress (p = 0.798), family and peer support (p = 0.887), family mental health influence (p = 0.951), or school support (p = 0.301). Conclusion: The study concluded that psychosocial factors do not significantly impact consumption patterns among high school adolescents in the NCC buffer area. Despite non-significant findings, this research provides important baseline data on adolescent consumption patterns in this strategic buffer area and suggests investigating other factors that may influence consumption behavior in this population.   Keyword: Adolescents; Consumption Patterns; Family Mental Health; Psychological Distres; Social Support.

Abstract

Community empowerment is a strategic step to improve the quality of life through increasing the capacity of individuals and communities, especially in the health sector. Posyandu Sanggar Waringin, Lok Bahu Village, faces challenges such as low immunization coverage, lack of community knowledge about nutrition, and high prevalence of preventable diseases. This activity aims to improve the skills of Posyandu cadres in the use of infant and toddler nutrition education media and communication with the community through the Lentera program (Latihan Edukasi dan Komunikasi Kader Mandiri). The research method used a participatory approach with activities including interviews, observations, social mapping, and focus group discussions involving 6 Posyandu cadres. Interventions were conducted through training using educational media and practice of searching for health information from the Ministry of Health website. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test analyzed by Wilcoxon test. Results showed a significant increase in cadres' knowledge and skills, with a pre-test mean score of 65 increasing to 87.5 in the post-test (p = 0.024). Abstract

Background : The mining area expands to more than 5 million hectares zoned for coal concession in East Kalimantan. East Kalimantan is the one of province that exist in tropical rainforest areas. The mining coal covers most of the region of East Kalimantan, including Samarinda the capital city of the province and Kutai Kartanegara the region that has a bigger proportion of regional income from the mining coal activities. Furthermore, Kutai Kartanegara has a coal mining area wider than Samarinda due to the company's responsibility to contribute to its surrounding environment. Mining often leads to significant changes to a society's social and economic structure. Social equity requires that such changes enhance overall social well-being, including the availability of adequate infrastructure, health services, and education, rather than only benefiting a select few or particular parties. Objective : This study aims to compare the people’s welfare of those who live closest to the mining area in Samarinda City and Kutai Kartanegara Regency, including their socioeconomic status and accessibility to public facilities. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This was an observational study with a cross-sectional approach. Data was collected by survey with structured questionnaires in Samarinda city and Kutai Kartanegara regency which is close to the mining area. As much as 218 respondents were collected from four different areas in Samarinda and 232 respondents were collected from six different areas in Kutai Kartanegara. The samples were selected by accidental sampling of those living in the areas. The questionnaire created some questions about the respondent’s characters (age, sex, education level, monthly income, home ownership) and how have they accessed the public facility (market, school, public health centre) using four-choice answers (very hard, hard, easy and very easy). The data was analyzed using the Chi-square Test to identify whether there were statistically significant differences between each variable in Samarinda City and Kutai Kartanegara Regency. Results : The results showed that statistically there were different proportions between Samarinda City and Kutai Kartanegara Regency in terms of education level (p 0.034), monthly income (p 0.015), market accessibility (p 0.000), school accessibility (p 0.023), and public health centre accessibility (p 0.000). There is only one variable that has no difference in home ownership (p 0.777). Regarding home ownership, there is no difference between the respondents in Samarinda and Kutai Kartanegara. They have their own home in common, only 23.9% of people do not have their own home in Samarinda and 25% in Kutai Kartanegara. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : The study implies that there is inequality of welfare and public access, especially in Kutai Kartanegara Regency compared to Samarinda City. This may lead to differences in income and education levels. Accessing facilities that support equity will be more challenging when communities are located or live close to mining areas. Thus, the attention of local government and mining companies is needed for further development of welfare and access to public facilities in the future.
