Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-germination treatment (physical and chemical) on the percentage and rate of germination of the f1 true seed of cassava derived from female parent UJ 3. The study consisted of two experiment, i.e., Experiment I and II. The pre-germination treatments for the two units experiment were the same, i.e., scarification of seed coat using sand paper, seed coat puncture, submerging the seed in one of the following liquid: the solution of H 2SO4 0,001M for 5 minutes, solution of H2SO4 0,001M for 10 minutes, solution of KNO3 3% for 48 hours, and water for 48 hours. The treatments were also compared to control. After being treated, the seeds were germinated on moistened paper (UKDdp) for Experiment I and on the soil medium in polybag for Experiment II. The two units of experiment were arranged in randomized block design with three replications. Soil medium consisted of mixture of soil and compost (1:1). The results showed that percentage and the rate of germination of the treatment of submerging seed of H2SO4 0,001M for 5 minutes followed by germination on soil medium were high. The percentage and the rate of germination for the treatment were 96%; 10,5% per day respectively; whereas for the control were 78,7% dan 6,8% per day. Scarification using sand paper indicated the percentage and rate of germination were high. It can be concluded that pre-germination treatment by submerging on H2SO4 0,001M for 5 minutes was suitable for germinating true seeds of cassava cv. UJ 3. Key words: Dormancy, pre-germination, Manihot esculenta Crantz, scarification, seed viability

Abstract

Climate change has been understood from air temperature that constantly rising.  Therefore, to study the impact of climate change on crops growth and production should begin with study the impact of air temperature on crops, so that the technique of making crops adapt to the climate change could be developed.  Crops reaction on temperature change could be detected from the phenology and quantified with the Growing degree days (GDD). The objective of this research was to identify the impact of temperature change on strawberry phenology and production through cultivating on low land area and calculating the GDD at the end of the planting period.  The results showed that Strawberry on low land experienced some difficulties to grow in optimal rate; up to the 10th week plant still did not reach the generative state uniformly and canopy coverage was below 20 percent.

Abstract

Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is generally cultivated in monoculture (sole cropping) by farmers in the highlands as main crops. Increasing land use efficiency (LUE) by inter-cropping sorghum on bean requires certain cultivation techniques so as not reducing the production of seeds or fresh fruit bean. This experiment aimed at determine 1) the yields of seeds and fresh pods harvested from the bean-sorghum intercropping compared to those from the sole cropping and 2) the LUE of the bean-sorghum intercropping.  The research, which was conducted during April-September 2021 in Sekincau District, West Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, Indonesia used dwarf beans Balitsa-2 variety and climbing bean Horti-3 variety, each of which to be intercropped with sorghum of Numbu variety. Five levels of cropping system treatment were arranged in a Completely Randomized Block Design (CRBD) with six groups as six replications. The results showed that there was no difference the seeds yield and fresh pods of bean between those harvested from bean-sorghum intercropping and from monocultures. The seed yield harvested from the dwarf bean-sorghum intercropping was higher, whereas those harvested from the climbing bean-sorghum intercropping was lower, respectively, compared to those harvested from the monoculture. In producing fresh pods, intercroppings of dwarf bean-sorghum and climbing bean-sorghum increased the LUE, respectively. Whereas in producing seeds, the dwarf bean-sorghum intercropping increased the LUE, but the climbing bean-sorghum intercropping decreased the LUE. Key words : bean, fresh pods, intercropping, seeds, sorghum

Abstract

Intercropping soybeans with cassava can become one solution to increase the production of soybean in Indonesia. This research aimed to determine the most optimal population combination of soybean-cassava intercropping for the growth and yield of soybean seeds, cassava tuber yield, and land use efficiency (LUE)..  The research was carried out on the farm land of the Main Seed Center in Sekincau District, West Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, Indonesia at -5°02’27” South and 104°18’16” East at elevation of 1173.1 meter from sea level and at the Seed and Plant Breeding Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture University of Lampung during June 2022 - February 2023. The four treatments of population combination of soybean-cassava intercropping were applied in a completely randomized block design (CRBD) and replicated five times in five blocks. The four population combination treatments of soybean-cassava intercropping were a) 100% soybean and 0% cassava (monoculture) (p₁), b) 67% soybean and 97% cassava (p₂), c) 67% soybean and 89% cassava (p₃), and d) 50% soybeans and 97% cassava (p₄). The growth and the seed yield per soybean stem of monoculture did not differ to those of the soybean-cassava intercropping, but the soybean seed yield per plot area of the intercropping was lower than those of monoculture. Its mainly due to the soybean population of the intercropping was lower compared to monoculture. All population combinations in soybean-cassava intercropping were effective in supporting the growth and yield of soybean seeds, but the population combination of 50% soybean and 97% cassava (p₄) was also effective in supporting cassava tuber yield, and had the highest land use efficiency among other population combinations. Key words:  flowering age, plant height, seed weight, tuber weight of cassava

Abstract

Chinese sprangletop (Leptochloa chinensis) reproduces sexually and vegetatively. This weed has a lot of seeds, is easy to grow, and adapts well to dry and wet land. Proper control is needed. Hoorahgrass extract can be used as an alternative to control weeds. Hoorahgrass (Fimbristylis miliacea) is a group of enigmatic weeds that contain allelochemical compounds. The aims of this research were to determine the effect of the source and concentration of hoorahgrass extract on the germination and growth of chinese sprangletop. This research carried out at the Greenhouse Integrated Field Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung from December 2022 to February 2023 using a Randomized Block Design (RAK) with 2 factors and 4 replications. The first factor was the extract component of hoorahgrass root (A1), shoot (A2) and mixture (A3), and the second factor was hoorahgrass with a concentration of 0% (B0) or (control), 2.5% (B1), 5% (B2 ), 7.5% (B3), 10% (B4). The data obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance, and first tested for homogeneity of variance using the Bartlett test, followed by the least significant difference test (LSD) at the 5% level. Based on the research results, hoorahgrass extract concentration of 5 to 10% was most effective in reducing seed germination rate, seed germination speed, chinese sprangletop root length and total dry weight. A concentration of 10% was most effective for reducing the height of chinese sprangletop. Keyword: Fimbrisylis, concentration, extract, bioherbicide, Leptochloa

Abstract

Rice growth and yield can be increased through various efforts, including the use of "high-yielding varieties, fertilization, soil conditioners with application of plant growth regulators (PGRs). Soil conditioners namely as biochar are carbon products that can enhance plant productivity through enhancing the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the soil, while cytokinine benzyladenine (BA) is a PGR that has been widely documented to stimulate cell growth, cell division, and differentiation in rice plants. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of biochar and benzyladenine (BA) on the growth and yield of the IR Nutrizinc rice variety. Data collection was carried out in October 2024 - February 2025 in Kampung Payung Rejo, Pubian District, Central Lampung Regency. The treatments were arranged factorially (2x3) using a completely randomized design with 3 replications. Factor I was without biochar and given 20 tons/ha of biochar. The second factor was 3 benzladenin (BA) concentrations, namely 0 ppm, 50 ppm, and 100 ppm applied by spraying on the surface of the plant at 20, 30, and 40-days after transplanting, while the biochar application was implemented 2 weeks before transplanting. Observed variables included plant height, maximum tillers per clump, count of productive tillers, length of panicles, and grains per panicle, percentage of empty grains per panicle, dry harvested grain yield, dry harvest grain yield, 1000 grain weight and dry weight of the crownThe Bartlett test was employed to assess the homogeneity of variance among treatments then analysis of variance was carried outIf a notable difference existed between treatments, the BNT test was carried out at the 5% significance level. The findings indicated that applying 20 tons/ha of biochar enhanced the yield components in terms of dry harvested grain, dry milled grain, and dry shoot weight The application of 50 ppm BA was able to increase the growth and yield of grain compared to without benzyladenine (BA). The combination of biochar and BA enhanced the growth and yield of grain in terms of the number of grains per panicle, dry harvested grain, and dry milled grain. The use of 20 tons/ha biochar combined with 50 ppm BA enhanced the yield of the IR Nutrizinc
