Abstract

Abstract: This paper deals with the use of informal bound morphs in Indonesian. There are several issues intend to be answered, i.e what are Indonesian bound morphs commonly found in informal speech situations, various grammatical meanings can be expressed by those bound morphs, and how the words containing such morphs could be paraphrased to identify their formal equivalents. By using data collected from several sources and creating their contextual usage introspectively, it is found that there are  at least five informal bound morphs in the use of Indonesian. Several of those bound morphs are informal in all contextual usages, and several others are  only so in expressing certain meanings. All of those informal morphs have formal correspondences eventhough in very rare cases the paraphrases seem very strange and hard to understand.

Abstract

This article is intended to describe the characteristics of language used in popular scientific discourse, and its differences from ones usually found in pure scientific articles. A close and careful examination through some amount of data extracted from Intisari, one of the most popular scientific megazines in Indonesia, shows that the use of language in the popular megazine is considerably different from those generally exploited in more serious scientific articles. The differences include the use of long and short sentence combinations, reported speech, pronouns, simele and metaphor, diction, conjuction and other syntactic constituent ellipsis, and anecdotes and play on word. The popular style is important to master, especially by anyone who are involved and interested in popular writing activities. Accordingly, the standard variation is not the only style to teach in langage learning.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims at describing the use of English in Indonesian Adolescent's slang broadly known as bahasa gaul, the colloquial variation that symbolizes intimate relationships among the youngsters. By using data extracted from three slang dictionaries and applying distributional and identity method, the investigation finds that according to the form, the English slangy expressions can be classified into word (either mono morphemic or poly morphemic word), phrase, and sentence. The monomorphemic words are mainly created through various phonological change or orthographical alterations. Meanwhile, the poly morphemic words may be constructed through affixation, reduplication, internal modification, contraction and compounding processes. The vernacular phrases and sentences may consist of English words or mixture of lndonesian and English element. Finally, nearly all of slangy expressions experience semantic and translational deviations which ate intentionally created for fulfilling various communicative purposes.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the domination of foreign languages on the use of Indonesian and local languages, and the resistance of the dominated languages in the naming of public enterprises in Yogyakarta. All data presented in this paper are obtained through observation to the public enterprise names found in Yogyakarta and classified based on their origin and the ways of creating resistence. The investigation yields that besides the most prominent English, there are several other foreign languages which influence theenterprise naming practices. Those are Arabic, Italy, France, Chinese, and Japanese. In some cases, the dominated Indonesian and Javanese show resistance by creating names which are orthographically, lexically, and grammatically resamble or similar to the expressions of the dominated languages. The domination should be seriously aware of by all Indonesian communities in order to succesfully maintain the sustainable existence of Indonesian and the local languages.

Abstract

The inclusion of French loanwords in the Indonesian language cannot be separated from the fact that there have been contacts between the two languages. In the process the French words underwent interference due to the different systems between the Indonesian Language and French, such as phonetic and ortographic system, in addition to the different structure of word formation of both languages. This phenomenon is closely linked to the status of French loanwords in the Indonesian language, whether they are interference or already integrated with the Indonesian language. In light of this, this study aims to examine whether French loanwords in the Indonesian Language are in the state of interference or already have integration status. This Study shows that the majority of French loanwords in Indonesian are still in the forms of interference. This is because these loanwords are still in their original forms – French words. Other French loanwords are already integrated with the Indonesian language, especially those having undergone consistent adjustments through their spoken and written use.

Abstract

This brief article deals with the use of Indonesian words referring to colors for creating metaphorical expressions. All data presented are collected from various sources, such as Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Standard Dictionary), and added with data obtained from Oxford Advanced Leaner’s Dictionary, Indonesian proverb book, encyclopedia, terminology collection book, poetry anthology, song lyrics, and data of the author’s own creation as an Indonesian native speaker. Set aside from their literal meanings, the metaphorically used color words are collected and classified into two categories, i.e. achromatic and chromatic colors. Then, their universalities are determined by comparing them with English color metaphors. Finally the existence of specific Indonesian color metaphors are identified by correlating them with extra linguistic factors, such as environment, history, religion, politic and other socio cultural activities. A careful analysis on the data shows that there is nearly no significant difference in metaphorical uses of achromatic colors in English and Indonesian. However, despite universal nuances of chromatic color metaphors, some specific ones emerge due to various external factors, such as environment, education, history, politic, law, religion, literature, and other socio cultural facts that are specifically found and practiced in Indonesia.

Abstract

In language, idioms can function as stand-alone semantic units because they contain whole concepts. These concepts, formed from human thought, can be explored to discover cultural elements which served as the basis for idiom creation. If the origins of an idiom are known or recognized, that idiom’s meaning can be understood more easily. Idioms are frequently used by language communities in their day-to-day lives. However, the origins of idioms in the Indonesian language has almost never been discussed or researched. This article compares the origins of idioms in Mandarin and in Indonesian. It finds that the origins of idioms in Mandarin and in Indonesian are diverse, but in general fit one of two main types: they may be adapted from foreign languages (most importantly in idioms related to religion), or be created within the society and reproduced from generation to generation. Idioms can be traced to either the written tradition or the oral tradition. Idioms in Mandarin generally originate from the written tradition, whereas idioms in Indonesian tend to originate from orality. This study uses the theory of meaning formation first proposed by Ogden and Richards (1911). The comparative method of data analysis is used here, as the origins of idioms in Mandarin and Indonesian are compared.

Abstract

This study investigates anything that underlie the differences of the variation on the packaging variation of the news content on the title that is based on the topicalization, the materials of news title writing, clarity and complexity of the news content, reference shifting from the title to the body of the news, roles of the mediator and the source of the news, maintaining the local value of the news, comparison between the news content on the prior text, and the ideology of the news. The analysis was conducted through pragmatic identity method, referential identity method, and traditional identity method. The data were analyzed by employing discourse approach (: micro-structure), especially the connectivity between the title to the body of the news. There are many things that underlie the differences of news content packaging on the straight news. From the structure of the news element, it can be found the several topicalizations such as the topicalization of what, who, where, when, cause, manner, or the combination of two or more elements of the news. A clear and complex package of a news content on the title gives an ease to the reader to understand the news content. However, in a package which does not put the clear reference on the title, the readers are suggested to continue to read the body of the news. Then, in a package which put the source of the news and its utterance on the title, the journalist tries to enclose the relation of the reader to the source of the news. Meanwhile, in a package which put the journalist as the mediator, the readers are invited to understand the content of the news based on their understanding and interpretation. As a commodity, any packages are utilized so that the news papers are not left behind by the readers. In a news which contains local value, the local utterances are maintained for the readers from other area to learn. Finally, in the package of the news content, the selection of the news topics becomes the ideologies which are harmonized with their vision-mission.
