Abstract

This research aims to describe the formal forms or manifestations of phatic discourse within the conversational discourse structure among the Javanese community. The data in this research are phatic discourses as units filling conversational/interactive discourse. Data collection was centered in Magelang. Data collection was carried out through non-participant observation techniques involving 22 respondents. During the data collection process, the researcher also conducted recording, notation, and translation. The analytical methods used in this research are referential equivalence, pragmatic equivalence, and distributional methods. Based on the research, in terms of form, phatic discourse is constructed with sentence-forming elements of news, questions, and commands. This proves that phatic discourse can be used in all modes of communication, whether declarative, interrogative, or imperative. However, pure phatic discourse with sentence-forming elements of commands was not found in its usage. In Javanese social interaction, phatic discourse is present and used as words that do not convey meaning but serve a social function.

Abstract

This study proposes to explain that Indonesian ethnic humor show cultural violence on the target group, in addition, to establishing an interethnic dialogue.  Cultural violence is defined as the entire cultural aspect that can be used to legitimize violence, whether direct or structural. Forms of cultural violence can include religion, ideology, language, empirical sciences, formal science, and cosmology. The problems questioned are (1) how cultural violence is depicted in the language structure of Indonesian ethnic humor and (2) how are the forms of cultural violence in the discourse of Indonesian ethnic humor. Data on ethnic humor were from books, magazines, websites, and social media. All were analyzed using critical discourse analysis. The results show that the potential for cultural violence in ethnic humor can be traced by its content and context. The content relates to the expressed substance and language, while context is under users' social and historical formation.  Ethnic humor in Indonesia targets ethnic minorities such as Chinese and Madurese. When it comes to racist circumstances, ethnic humor can normalize structural discrimination and violence against the referred ethnicities. Cultural violence includes stigmatization, normalization of discriminatory policies, and social exclusion. This finding suggests that nonserious discourse, such as humor, has a severe social impact, therefore it must be used wisely.

Abstract

This article was initially triggered by the use of ‘plays on words’ found in enterprise naming around Yogyakarta. Based on that phenomenon, this article focused on approaches and motivations of enterprises naming using plays on words, influences of foreign languages used as naming models, and their semiotic interpretations. The data were collected were in the forms of enterprise names suspected to have been created as plays on words by observing enterprises’ billboards and placards around Yogyakarta. The data were also gained by interviewing several enterprise owners to reveal the motivations underlying the use of plays on words. The collected data were analyzed to unveil the closest pronunciations, meanings, and spelling of the names of enterprises influenced by various context, such as the products yielded, services offered, environments, location of enterprises, etc. This article found that naming practices involve several approaches, i.e., spelling deviations, homo phonic and nearly homo phonic pairing, spelling permutations, contractions, and word-to-word translation. There were at least six foreign languages used as models, namely English, French, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Arabic. Two main motivations were identified for these naming practices: to create jokes and to lend beauty. From a semiotic viewpoint, these phenomena constitute struggles of the dominated group, whose language is socially less prestigious, against the dominant group, whose language is considered more prestigious. It implies that using plays on words strategy in naming enterprises can be seen as a branding strategy to generate jokes or fun names and to lend beauty which in the end impact in persuading target market to visit their business enterprises.

Abstract

Hedging and boosting or ‘pembentengan’ (Indonesian) is the act of scientific writers in maintaining smooth scientific communication. This paper answers two problem formulations, i.e., what are the linguistic manifestations of hedges and boosters in Indonesian scientific articles, and how their meaning reveals the writer's level of confidence in the information conveyed. This study aims to enrich the description of scientific writing practices in Indonesia to support the development of scientific writing skills in general. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. This research data is in the form of sentences containing hedges and boosters from various scientific journals published in Indonesia through the note-taking technique. The main theory to analyze the data is the theory on hedges and boosters. The data were analyzed semantically, syntactically, and pragmatically. The results show that hedges and boosters in the form of adverbs are the most commonly used in Indonesian Scientific writing. The meaning of hedges and boosters cannot always be determined by their lexical meaning because each hedge and booster has to be seen in its use in the sentence. The Indonesian scientific community has its own agreement in the social interaction of scientific articles. Keywords: scientific writing; hedges and boosters; confidence; doubt; function; interaction

Abstract

WhatsApp is an option for communicating in the current era, regardless people’s background. In the world of education, for instance, both students and lecturers also use this application for teaching and learning activities. Unfortunately, not many students communicate with this media properly so the messages sent to their lecturers tend to be impolite, especially when the messages are sent in English. One indicator of this is the absence of greetings in the message. None of the previous research has discussed the specific element(s) of a message that becomes the gap of this research. This research aims to find out what greetings students usually use when sending English messages to lecturers and how important greetings are in sending a text message. This quantitative research involved 60 lecturers who teach in English Department or teach English subjects throughout Indonesia who filled out questionnaires and expressed their opinions on several English text messages sent by students. The result shows that there are several types of greetings used by students, such as "Assalamualaikum", "Hello", "Good morning/Good afternoon /Good evening", and also "Excuse me...” Furthermore, 53,3% respondents agree that greetings are one of the most important aspects in sending a message politely.
