Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out if applying Dictogloss technique can improve writing skills of eighth-grade students. The researcher applied pre-experimental research design. One hundred and thirty seven students of SMPN 5 Palu took part in this research, and class VIII A which consisted of 23 students were selected samples of the research. The data were collected using a test administered twice; it was in the form of a pre-test and a post-test. The data were analyzed statistically. The results of the data analysis showed that the t-counted value (15.3) was higher than that of the t-table (1.717) by applying a significance level of 0.05 with a degree of freedom (df) 22(n-1). This means that the hypothesis is accepted. In other words, applying Dictogloss technique can improve writing skills of eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Palu.

Abstract

This research aimed to identification and analysis students’ ability and difficulties in writing descriptive text. This research used qualitative descriptive methods. The research subject are X grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Palu. The research took 20 students as sample. This research used interview and test to collect the data. The result of this research shows the students’ ability, the students’ difficulty in writing descriptive text and the factors students’ difficulties in writing descriptive texts. The difficulties are difficulties in generic structure, difficulties in grammar, and difficulties in mechanic, while the factors that cause the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text are lack of proficiency in the text production skills, and lack of interest in learning English

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the strategies that the English teachers use in teaching reading comprehension at SMP Labschool Palu, (2) to find out the reasons why the English teachers chose the strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The subject of this research all the English teachers at SMP Labschool Palu. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The technique of collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The researcher analyzed the data by using descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that there were five strategies mostly used by the English teachers in teaching reading comprehension to be applied in the classroom. There were (monitoring comprehension, recognizing story structure, question answer relationship, graphic and semantic organizers, and summarizing). Based on the analysis of interview to the teachers, those strategies can help the teachers because the students more active and the students could exchange their opinion with their friends.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the grammatical errors and the dominant error written by the tenth-grade students of SMA Karuna Dipa Palu in the academic year 2021/2022 in writing recount text. The researchers used the descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this research was all the tenth-grade students of SMA Karuna Dipa Palu which consisted of 32 students. In collecting the data, the researchers used test as the instrument. The researchers analyzed the data by using error analysis. The result of the research showed that the students made 412 errors in their recount texts which are classified into: simple past tense (34.7%), preposition (6.1%), pronoun (3.9%), spelling (10.7%), and punctuation (44.7%). The dominant error is punctuation. The dominant errors occurred because the students pay less attention to the use of good and correct punctuation. They are apathetic to the use of punctuation.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the difficulties in speaking English and the factors influencing these difficulties among the students. The research design used is a qualitative method with the subjects of the research being the fourth-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews as data collection tolos. Based on the data análisis results, there are three predominant speaking difficulties faced by most students. First, the diffculty in expressing ideas clearly and effectively. Second, the difficulty in using correct grammar. Third, the difficulty in dealing with anxiety while speaking. The factors influencing these difficulties are divided into two main categories: linguistic factors and psychological factors. Linguistic factors relate to language elements such as limited vocabulary, improper grammar usage, and nuclear pronunciation. Psychological factors include individual psychological aspects such as low self-confidence, lack of motivation, and high levels of anxiety. The findings of this study are expected to provide insights for educators to develop strategies to help students overcome these challenges and improve their speaking skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis strategi yang digunakan oleh guru dalam meningkatkan nilai-nilai sosial siswa kelas VII melalui pembelajaran Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial (IPS) di MTs Jamaluddin Lekong Rembuk, Kecamatan Wanasaba. Nilai-nilai sosial seperti tanggung jawab, kejujuran, sopan santun, dan tolong-menolong menjadi aspek penting dalam pembentukan karakter siswa, khususnya dalam konteks pesantren yang memiliki lingkungan sosial terbatas. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru IPS menerapkan strategi pembelajaran yang meliputi pendekatan afektif, pembelajaran kooperatif, dan pemberian contoh perilaku positif. Strategi ini efektif dalam mendorong siswa untuk menginternalisasi dan mempraktikkan nilai-nilai sosial baik di dalam maupun di luar kelas. Namun, penelitian ini juga mengidentifikasi kendala yang dihadapi guru, seperti rendahnya disiplin siswa, pengaruh lingkungan luar sekolah, dan kejenuhan siswa terhadap metode pembelajaran yang monoton. Sebagai solusi, guru menggunakan pendekatan personal, memvariasikan metode pembelajaran, dan memberikan tugas-tugas yang mendukung kerja sama dan tanggung jawab. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan menjadi referensi bagi institusi pendidikan dalam mengembangkan model pembelajaran IPS yang berorientasi pada pembentukan karakter siswa. Kata kunci: strategi guru, nilai sosial, pembelajaran IPS, pendidikan karakter.

Abstract

This article discusses how Nahdlatul Wathan is prepared to care for the Islamic mission and the future of the country. Also include in some sub, this article examines the effort was done by Nahdlatul Wathan manifest his existence, for example, as system engineering organization that carefully conditioned with deep and widespread benefit standard. Study of integration efforts of the entire element, both micro as well as macro Nahdlatul Wathan became a staple part because that social phenomenon conspicuous in the dynamics of the Nahdlatul Wathan. Answering some doubts, trigger the interest analyze the awareness of Nahdlatul Wathan more conical in the post national tragedy, G-30-S PKI. In more detail, the author loads the perception ofNahdlatul Wathan positioning the national tragedy above as a threat of the prestige of Republic Indonesia. The author then observe that the Nahdlatul Wathan at the beginning of the new orde era as it has come to a turning point to do something for his country and nation without support of hope space "what is givenby Indonesia to Nahdlatul Wathan?". Nahdlatul Wathan in importance of optimizing his participation build a country, programmatically doing stages based on harakah was destabilizing the depend mechanism of the nation, especially the nahdliyin, so it is solid and firmly hold the national ideology as a manifestation of "hubbul Wathan" at once as a marker of religious settlement . These facts and phenomenon did not escape the spotlight in this article.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine whether the application of POSSE (predict, organize, search, summarize, evaluate) strategy could enhance the understanding of reading skills of tenth-grade pupils in SMAN 7 PALU. This study utilized designing quasi-experimental, dividing participants into an experiment group and a control group. The technique of purposive sampling was employed to decide the sample, comprising 36 students from the experimental group and 35 pupils from the control group. Gathering of data involved pre-test and post-test assessments, with analysis conducted utilizing paired sample t-tests with the support of SPSS v.29 for windows. The findings indicated that applying of the POSSE approach effectively enhanced the understanding of reading among tenth-grade students attending SMAN 7 PALU. This conclusion was substantiated by the results of conducting the paired sample t-test, which showed a statistically notable disparity (2-tailed=0.001<0.05) in the students’ learning outcomes between the initial assessment and subsequent assessment.

Abstract

This study focuses on the effectiveness of using the Duolingo application in teaching vocabulary to grade XI. This study used a quasi-experimental design with two classes: experimental and control. The experimental class received treatment using Duolingo media, while the control class was taught using conventional media. Pre-tests and post-tests were used to assess improvements in students’ vocabulary. The results of the study indicate that the use of the Duolingo application is effective and can improve students’ vocabulary, as evidenced by the average score of the experimental class increasing from 78.10 to 95.5. The Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference between the two classes (p<0.05), indicating that the use of the Duolingo application is effective in teaching vocabulary. In addition, the findings reveal that students in the experimental class demonstrated higher levels of engagement, motivation, and confidence when learning new vocabulary through the application. The interactive features of Duolingo, such as gamification and immediate feedback, contributed to a more meaningful learning experience. These advantages suggest that mobile-based language learning tools like Duolingo can play a significant role in enhancing language acquisition in formal educational settings. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers consider integrating technology-enhanced instructional media to complement traditional teaching methods in order to maximize students’ outcomes in vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The ability to understand and evaluate written information is known as reading comprehension, while vocabulary mastery is the ability to use words in a language effectively. This study looked at how reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery relate to one another among eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Palu. Out of a total population of 534 students in 15 courses, 73 individuals were chosen at random to participate in a correlational study design. Multiple-choice exams with 30 questions for reading comprehension and 50 items for vocabulary mastery were used to gather data. A linearity test, Spearman's rank correlation, and the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for normalcy were used to analyse the data because of its non-normal distribution. The findings showed a p-value of 0.135 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant relationship between reading comprehension and vocabulary competence. A very little positive link was shown by the correlation coefficient (rs = 0.177). Therefore, it can be said that in this particular situation, students' reading comprehension ability is not strongly predicted by vocabulary competence alone.
