Abstract

English is the most widely spoken language worldwide for social, economic, political, cultural, technological, and educational communication. Along these lines, when people learn vocabulary of English, they will find countless different words, from littlest to biggest word, they are derivational morphemes of an English word. Therefore, it is interesting in discussing the derivational process that exists in Selena Gomez’s Speech. Descriptive qualitative methods are used in this research to analyzed the derivational morpheme and the functions of derivational morpheme in Selena Gomez’s Speech. The data was collected using documentation method and note taking technique through, reading carefully, highlighting, classifying the types and the function. The collected data was analyzed using qualitative method and explained descriptively. This research applied the morphology theory proposed by Katamba (1993) in order to identify the types and functions of derivational morpheme in Selena Gomez’s Speech.

Abstract

This research entitled “Slang Expressions in Big Hero 6 Movie” focuses on identifying the types and functions of slang in the movie. This research applied documentation method to collect the data completed with note-taking technique. The data were taken by watching the movie and taking notes of the slang expressions found in the movie. In analysing the data, qualitative method is applied and the findings are presented descriptively. The findings reveal the presence of 22 expressions in fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, and clipping types. The slang types and their functions are categorized according to Allan and Burridge’s theory with supporting theory by Halliday.

Abstract

This undergraduate thesis is entitled Woman’s Language features used by the main female character in “A Star is Born” movie. It is aimed to identifying the types of women’s language features and described the context of the situation that influenced women’s language found in the movie. This undergraduate thesis used the documentation method for collecting data. The data was collected from the movie by watching the movie, reading the movie script as well as seen at the subtitle of the movie. Then identify the women’s language features in the dialogue and analyze it using Lakoff’s theory and the theory by Halliday to analyze the context of the situation. In analyzing the data, this undergraduate thesis applied the qualitative paradigm method to present the data, screenshots of the conversation in the movie are used as the data. The result of the analysis shows that not all types of women’s language features are used by Ally in the movie A Star Is Born movie. There were found seven out of ten types of women’s language features. The precise color terms, ‘hypercorrect’ grammar, and empty stress were not found in Ally’s utterances.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the various slang words featured in the movie “On My Block,” with a particular focus on those employed by the main character while also delving into their semantic nuances. This research contributes to a broader understanding of the usage of slang language, enriching the knowledge of listeners and viewers alike. The study employed in this study revolves around documentation. Data collection involved viewing the movie and meticulously documenting dialogues containing slang expressions used by the characters. The subsequent analysis draws upon Partridge’s framework for categorizing slang types, coupled with sourcing slang meanings from Partridge’s dictionary. The study adopts a multifaceted approach, encompassing both formal and informal methods to present the analytical findings. The research findings effectively address two critical facets of the research problem. Firstly, they categorize the slang words featured in the “On My Block” movie into three distinct types: Society slang, Cockney slang, and Public House slang. Secondly, the study elucidates the significance of these slang words in the context of the movie, shedding light on their functional roles within conversational exchanges.

Abstract

Dalam konteks pendidikan di era digital, pelatihan pembuatan konten pembelajaran digital bagi para guru di sekolah menjadi suatu kebutuhan mendesak. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat terkait dengan integrasi teknologi dalam proses pembelajaran menjadi fokus utama. Artikel ini membahas pentingnya pelatihan tersebut dalam mengatasi tantangan yang dihadapi oleh para guru, baik secara teknis maupun psikologis. Pembahasan mencakup aspek penggunaan aplikasi Prezi, peningkatan keterampilan guru, dan peran dosen sebagai fasilitator untuk mendorong penerapan praktis dari pelatihan ini di dalam kelas. Tujuan akhirnya adalah menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang inovatif, berkolaborasi, dan mendukung pengembangan siswa di era digital.

Abstract

This research explores the use of inflectional affixes in Book #88 Love Life 03 by Diana Rikasari, using Victoria Fromkin’s morphological framework. Inflectional affixes are suffixes added to words to express grammatical features such as tense, number, possession, aspect, and degree, without changing the word’s original class or core meaning. The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the types and functions of these affixes within the selected text. The research used a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data was collected through documentation and analyzed using note-taking and cross-checking techniques to ensure accuracy. The results show that all eight standard English inflectional affixes were found in the book: -s (plural and third-person-singular), -ed (past-tense), -ing-(progressive), -en (past participle),--’s (possessive), -er (comparative), and -est (superlative). Each affix was used to mark specific grammatical functions and was essential in maintaining proper sentence structure. The analysis highlights that inflectional affixes play a key role in creating clear and grammatically correct sentences. Understanding their use helps readers and language learners grasp how meaning and structure are expressed in written English. This research supports the importance of morphological analysis in understanding how language functions at the word level and contributes to effective communication.

Abstract

This research explores positive politeness strategies in the 2020 film All the Bright Places by analyzing the characters' dialogue. It is based on Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory of positive politeness, supported by Halliday and Hasan's (1989) context of situation framework. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes the film script. Data is collected through documentation, including note-taking and recording techniques, to identify relevant utterances. The findings show that fourteen out of fifteen positive politeness strategies from Brown and Levinson's theory appear in the film. Strategy 4, which uses in-group identity markers, is the most common. The characters often try to build solidarity and emotional connection. Other frequently used strategies include noticing the listener, offering or promising, and seeking agreement. These strategies reflect the characters' efforts to build and maintain relationships, show empathy, and manage social interactions. The study concludes that positive politeness strategies are essential in shaping the film's interpersonal relationships and emotional development. Overall, the research highlights how language use in film reflects psychological and social aspects of communication, offering insights into the role of pragmatics in fictional narratives.

Abstract

This research discusses the semiotic signs used in the @barenbliss_id Instagram posters. This research aims to identify the verbal and visual signs used in Barenbliss Indonesia Instagram posters and explain how these signs shape consumer perception to increase brand engagement. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from two Instagram posters published by @barenbliss_id in November 2024. These posters were documented and analyzed by identifying their verbal and visual elements. Afterward, the interrelation of the signs to increase engagement was explained. Afterward, the interrelation of the signs to increased engagement was explained. The analysis applied Barthes’s semiotics theory and supported by Chandler’s signs framework. The findings of this research show that visual signs are more dominant than verbal signs, with a total of 13 visual signs and 7 verbal signs. The signs used are texts containing information about the product, bright and soft colors, images of the product, and models that help visually show the product’s use. The verbal and visual signs used on the posters are interrelated and complement each other. These results show that well-coordinated use of verbal and visual elements can effectively shape positive consumer perceptions and increase brand engagement.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the mental health of the main character in a short story, who is often found to be suffering from postpartum depression. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This data was taken from the HCC Learning website. The data collection is carried out using the documentation method. The theory used in this research is Dobie's literary critical theory in the third edition of the book and Beauvoir's (1949) feminist theory. In the story The Yellow Wallpaper, the woman's perceived mental health is depicted as drastically declining due to confinement and lack of freedom, leading to isolation and delusions. The main character, who initially suffers from mild depression, becomes increasingly obsessed with the wallpaper pattern in her room, the ending in a complete mental collapse due to ineffective therapy and a stressful environment.

Abstract

This ethnographic study examined the annual festival of ogoh-ogoh (giant sculpture) held by youth in the international tourist town of Ubud, Bali. Using participant observation supplemented by semi-structured interviews with youth organizations, ritual specialists, master craftsmen, and artists, along with documentary analysis of institutional protocols and competition frameworks, the study reveals that the intersemiotic translation from narrative to sculptural form maintains the link with Balinese folklore, transforming it into desirable cultural capital through hermeneutic problem-solving that requires consultation of palm leaf lontar manuscripts and the involvement of elders. Visual–spatial and kinesthetic processing generates mnemonic amplification, producing mythological preservation, while adaptive transmission demonstrates young people's mastery of contemporary technologies and administrative skills, reinforcing traditional knowledge, enabling organizational sovereignty, and maintaining epistemic authority through strategic opacity. These findings redefine cultural sustainability beyond the conservation–innovation dichotomy, revealing the folkloric vitality that emerges through modernity and touristic culture.
