Abstract

The representation of gender roles in media such as movies plays an important role in shaping the social and cultural values of behavioral expectations of individuals within society. While many studies have examined the depiction of traditional gender roles in movies, a few of them focuses on how the main character resists these roles and challenge patriarchal traditions. This study analyzes Brave with a focus on the main character’s resistance against gender roles through the perspective of radical feminism. The purpose of this study is to describe how the main character challenges patriarchal expectations and traditional gender norms in the narrative, and asserts her independence within a patriarchal context. The data were collected the movie scenes and dialogues through documentation and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using narrative analysis in qualitative method by applying feminism theory proposed by Tong (2009), which focusing on radical feminism as a lens. The findings identify three forms of resistance by the main character: the resistance against arranged marriage, the resistance against femininity roles, and the resistance of personal autonomy. These forms of resistance reflect radical feminist principles by directly opposing patriarchal structures and affirming women’s right to self-determination. The study concludes that Brave not only illustrates gender roles but also provides a critical narrative of resistance, demonstrating the potential of animated movies to question and reconstruct social and cultural understandings of gender. Keywords: gender, gender roles, radical feminism, resistance

Abstract

The exploration of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) application particularly the ideational metafunction in spoken text like simultaneous interpreting within a reflective narrative text of legal and security context, focusing on the realization of mental and material processes has been limited to access. This study compares interpreting performance of 3 novices and 3 professional interpreters as they interpret an audio recording from Indonesian to English discussing border issues to investigate the realization of mental and material processes. Through qualitative descriptive approach of the interpreted texts, the study examines how each group constructs experiential meaning, especially in rendering cognitive (mental) and action-oriented (material) processes. Results indicate that novice and professional interpreters used material and mental processes in similar proportions, yet the quality of their realizations varied, with professionals demonstrating more accurate and consistent rendering. Novice interpreters, however, tend to generalize or omit key elements, particularly in complex mental processes, leading to reduced accuracy in meaning transfer. These differences highlight the impact of interpreter experience on the quality of simultaneous interpreting in border reflective narrative contexts containing speaker’s reflection and experience. The findings underscore the value of SFL as an analytical framework in interpreter training and assessment, especially in enhancing sensitivity to ideational meaning within reflective narrative texts.

Preliminary observations show that they, in general, use Balinese dialect of English or Balish. This article describes the Balish used in tourism area of Kuta, Bali, by tourism workers who have naturalized the English language by adopting several language features, especially Balinese and Indonesian, such as sentence structures, words, and expressions. The data were analyzed using The New Englishes theory and the results showed that the use of Balinese and Indonesian words in English resulted in the creation of new words, grammatical shifts, changes in word meanings, use of idioms, use of groups of verbs, and repetition of forms. Balish has adopted several grammatical features, both from Balinese and Indonesian, and it is hoped that one day it will have regular speakers so that it becomes a pidgin.

In the environment of Balinese language, there also live other languages including national language (Indonesian) and foreign languages (such as English, Japanese, and Mandarin). This phenomenon might indicate that Balinese language appears to be marginalized. This article aims at investigating languages that are used in Balinese language environment in Ubud.
