Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the mental health of the main character in a short story, who is often found to be suffering from postpartum depression. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This data was taken from the HCC Learning website. The data collection is carried out using the documentation method. The theory used in this research is Dobie's literary critical theory in the third edition of the book and Beauvoir's (1949) feminist theory. In the story The Yellow Wallpaper, the woman's perceived mental health is depicted as drastically declining due to confinement and lack of freedom, leading to isolation and delusions. The main character, who initially suffers from mild depression, becomes increasingly obsessed with the wallpaper pattern in her room, the ending in a complete mental collapse due to ineffective therapy and a stressful environment.

Abstract

This ethnographic study examined the annual festival of ogoh-ogoh (giant sculpture) held by youth in the international tourist town of Ubud, Bali. Using participant observation supplemented by semi-structured interviews with youth organizations, ritual specialists, master craftsmen, and artists, along with documentary analysis of institutional protocols and competition frameworks, the study reveals that the intersemiotic translation from narrative to sculptural form maintains the link with Balinese folklore, transforming it into desirable cultural capital through hermeneutic problem-solving that requires consultation of palm leaf lontar manuscripts and the involvement of elders. Visual–spatial and kinesthetic processing generates mnemonic amplification, producing mythological preservation, while adaptive transmission demonstrates young people's mastery of contemporary technologies and administrative skills, reinforcing traditional knowledge, enabling organizational sovereignty, and maintaining epistemic authority through strategic opacity. These findings redefine cultural sustainability beyond the conservation–innovation dichotomy, revealing the folkloric vitality that emerges through modernity and touristic culture.

Abstract

In the digital era, smartphone advertising extends beyond the promotion of technical features and increasingly functions as a medium for constructing cultural meanings, myths, and ideologies. This study examines YouTube advertisements for the Samsung Galaxy A34 using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, which includes the levels of denotation, connotation, myth, and ideology. Through qualitative analysis, the research identifies how visual narratives and technological representations in the commercials generate symbolic associations with empowerment, mobility, multicultural harmony, and futurism. These connotative meanings evolve into broader cultural myths that portray technology as a liberating force, a unifying agent, and a marker of social progress. At the ideological level, the advertisements naturalize values of modernity, consumerism, technological determinism, and hyper-individualism. Additionally, the study highlights YouTube’s algorithmic and multimodal features, which amplify the reach and ideological influence of such advertisements by enabling targeted dissemination and interactive user engagement. The findings demonstrate that YouTube smartphone commercials function not only as marketing tools but also as cultural texts that shape societal perceptions of technology, identity, and modern life.

Abstract

This study investigates translation shifts in Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala and its English translation Cigarette Girl, translated by Annie Tucker. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and drawing on Catford’s (1965) theory of translation shifts, the research examines linguistic changes that occur in the translation process from Indonesian into English. The findings identify two major types of translation shifts: level shifts and category shifts. Level shifts involve changes between grammatical and lexical levels, while category shifts comprise structural, class, unit, and intra-system shifts. These shifts demonstrate the translator’s strategies in addressing systemic differences between Indonesian and English to achieve naturalness, clarity, and semantic equivalence in the target text. The study highlights the practical role of translation shifts in enhancing textual readability without compromising the source text’s meaning. By illustrating how Catford’s shift theory operates in a contemporary literary context, this research contributes to translation studies and offers useful insights for literary translators dealing with cross-linguistic and structural challenges.

Abstract

This research, entitled Verbal and Visual Signs on “How I Met Your Mother” TV Series Poster, focuses on identifying both verbal and visual signs that appear on the official poster of the series and analyzing the meanings they convey. The study applies a qualitative-descriptive method with a semiotic approach, mainly grounded in Chandler’s (2007) theory of semiotics. This is further supported by Dyer’s (1982) theory of verbal and nonverbal signs, as well as Olesen’s (2019) color theory, which enrich the interpretation of the visual elements. The data for this research were collected from official How I Met Your Mother TV Series posters accessed through online sources. The analysis highlights how verbal signs, such as the series title and additional text, function as direct communicators, providing the audience with essential information about the show. At the same time, visual signs play a central role in shaping the poster’s meaning. The representation of the main characters, the recurring image of the iconic yellow umbrella, and the deliberate use of colors in both costumes and background create symbolic layers that reflect the characters’ personalities, relationships, and the overall tone of the narrative. This research demonstrates that a poster is not only a promotional tool but also a semiotic artifact that embodies the essence of the series. Through the interplay of verbal and visual elements, the How I Met Your Mother poster encapsulates the themes of love, friendship, and destiny, which lie at the heart of the storyline and continue to resonate with its audience.

Abstract

The representation of gender roles in media such as movies plays an important role in shaping the social and cultural values of behavioral expectations of individuals within society. While many studies have examined the depiction of traditional gender roles in movies, a few of them focuses on how the main character resists these roles and challenge patriarchal traditions. This study analyzes Brave with a focus on the main character’s resistance against gender roles through the perspective of radical feminism. The purpose of this study is to describe how the main character challenges patriarchal expectations and traditional gender norms in the narrative, and asserts her independence within a patriarchal context. The data were collected the movie scenes and dialogues through documentation and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using narrative analysis in qualitative method by applying feminism theory proposed by Tong (2009), which focusing on radical feminism as a lens. The findings identify three forms of resistance by the main character: the resistance against arranged marriage, the resistance against femininity roles, and the resistance of personal autonomy. These forms of resistance reflect radical feminist principles by directly opposing patriarchal structures and affirming women’s right to self-determination. The study concludes that Brave not only illustrates gender roles but also provides a critical narrative of resistance, demonstrating the potential of animated movies to question and reconstruct social and cultural understandings of gender. Keywords: gender, gender roles, radical feminism, resistance

Abstract

This article aims at examining the Panopticism within the novella Animal Farm during Napoleon’s leadership. This is done by applying the theory of Panopticism developed by Foucault as derived from Bentham's Panopticon model. This research utilizes the qualitative method and uses George Orwell’s novella Animal Farm (1945) as the data source. Foucault's panoptic schema is characterized by the impression of continuous observation internalized into self-surveillance. The findings suggest that the Animal Farm is considered a panoptic society, with the pigs corresponding to the tower inspectors and the farm animals as the prisoners. The panoptic surveillance comes in various forms and primarily through discourse, to influence the animals to conform to the norm of staying docile and accepting Napoleon’s leadership. The Panopticism in Animal Farm shows how discourse can be a powerful device of social control as a surveillance method, especially when it incites fear and the desire for security.

Abstract

English plays an important role for workers in the tourism sector of all classes, including wholesalers, massage therapists, parking attendants, and shop assistants. Preliminary observations show that they, in general, use Balinese dialect of English or Balish. This article describes the Balish used in tourism area of Kuta, Bali, by tourism workers who have naturalized the English language by adopting several language features, especially Balinese and Indonesian, such as sentence structures, words, and expressions. The data were analyzed using The New Englishes theory and the results showed that the use of Balinese and Indonesian words in English resulted in the creation of new words, grammatical shifts, changes in word meanings, use of idioms, use of groups of verbs, and repetition of forms. Balish has adopted several grammatical features, both from Balinese and Indonesian, and it is hoped that one day it will have regular speakers so that it becomes a pidgin.
