Abstract

This study aims to examine the direct and indirect effects of parents' educational level through the father's role on the development of independence and discipline in early childhood in Delang District, Lamandau Regency. The regression analysis results indicate that both educational level and the father’s role significantly affect children's independence (β = 0.484; β = 0.147) and discipline (β = 0.184; β = 0.137), with p-values less than 0.05. The Sobel test also confirms significant indirect effects of parental education on independence (Z = 2.85) and discipline (Z = 2.108) through the father’s involvement. These findings emphasize that higher parental education tends to encourage more active father involvement, which in turn plays a key role in shaping children's character, particularly in terms of independence and discipline. The study recommends promoting the educational role of fathers and supporting family-based education as essential foundations for positive early childhood development.

Abstract

This study highlights the vital role of socio-emotional and language development in early childhood as key foundations for later success. It investigates the influence of parenting styles and parental educational attainment on these developmental aspects among children at Murung Raya Kindergarten, Banjarmasin. Using a quantitative explanatory design and path analysis, data were collected from 173 parents through validated Likert-scale questionnaires. Results showed that parenting style significantly influenced language (β=0.253; p0.05) and socio-emotional development (β=0.622; p0.05), while parental education also had significant effects on both domains. Socio-emotional development strongly predicted language outcomes (β=0.578; p0.05) and mediated the relationships between parenting style and language development (Sobel = 6.674; p0.05), and parental education and language development (Sobel = 4.832; p0.05). These findings underscore the importance of supportive parenting and educational backgrounds in promoting holistic early childhood development and highlight the value of family-based interventions.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of birth order on self-confidence and emotional stability among university students residing in wetland communities. Using a quantitative survey design, 200 students, comprising 100 firstborns and 100 lastborns, from Lambung Mangkurat University were assessed using the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS). Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney tests, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) were used to analyze the data. Results indicated that firstborn students exhibited significantly higher self-confidence (M = 3.57, SD = 1.26) and emotional stability (M = 3.43, SD = 1.26) than lastborns (p < .05). Family expectations and academic experiences emerged as key influences. SEM revealed that self-confidence strongly predicts emotional stability (β = 0.52, p < .001), with family background and educational experience having moderate effects. The findings underscore the psychological challenges faced by students in geographically isolated, resource-limited wetland environments. Tailored counseling interventions are recommended, particularly for lastborn students. Future research should investigate the intersection of cross-cultural and environmental factors. Keywords: self-confidence, emotional stability, birth order, wetland communities, Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS)
