Abstract

A deep comprehension of learning materials is vital for meaningful and lasting education. When understanding is lacking, learning becomes superficial and fails to leave a significant impact. This study investigates the challenges students encounter in comprehending Arabic texts at Al-Azhar Yogyakarta boarding school, focusing on the key factors that hinder their textual understanding. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis. The findings identify several obstacles to adequate comprehension, including linguistic challenges such as limited vocabulary, complex syntactic structures, and unfamiliarity with context. Pedagogical issues also emerged, particularly teaching methods that inadequately address diverse learner needs. Furthermore, student motivation and prior exposure to Arabic significantly influence their ability to engage with the texts. To address these issues, the study recommends strategies such as contextualized instruction, interactive teaching techniques, and personalized learning approaches. The results underscore the need for curricular reforms that integrate contemporary pedagogical practices and educational technologies. By confronting these challenges, the study aims to enhance students’ comprehension of Arabic texts, improve learning outcomes, and provide a foundation for future research on effective methods of Arabic language instruction in similar educational environments.

Abstract

Learning activities to improve students' critical thinking skills are common. One of the activities that can enhance critical thinking skills is the munazharah ilmiah activity at the Ar Raayah Islamic boarding school. This study aims to find the management pattern of the munazharah ilmiah extracurricular activity and its implications for students' critical thinking, istima', and kalam skills at the Ar Raayah Islamic boarding school. This study uses a qualitative case study approach at the Ar Raayah Islamic boarding school. Data collection was carried out using interviews, observation, and documentation methods. The informants in this study were 16 students of STIBA Ar Raayah , extracurricular activity trainers, and teachers at the Ar Raayah Islamic boarding school. Data analysis consisted of reading/memoing, describing, and classifying. The study results showed that munazharah ilmiah, as an extracurricular activity, was held for students interested in participating in the Arabic debate competition. The discussion topics came from the handbook and were based on hot issues in social life. This activity was managed by the PBA Student Association (HIMA). This activity's trainers are students with experience in Arabic debate competitions. The rules in this activity follow the Qatar debate regulations and the debaters must use Arabic correctly and adequately. Munazharah ilmiah process that requires arguments trains students to think critically. The students' istima' ability is trained when listening to the opponent's argument. Likewise, the ability to write is trained when expressing arguments and rebuttals clearly and firmly in a short time. The management process of this munazharah ilmiah activity can be adopted by other Islamic boarding schools that want to train their students in critical thinking, istima', and kalam.

Abstract

Abstract: Purpose- This study aims to analyze the use of a metacognitive approach in developing Arabic reading skills.  The metacognitive approach refers to students' understanding and self-regulation of their learning process, including understanding reading strategies, monitoring comprehension, and reflecting on the understanding they have acquired. Design/Methodology/Approach- This study uses the library research method, in which researchers collect data from scientific articles and books that are relevant to the research topic.  The data obtained was then analyzed using content analysis techniques (Content Analysis), in which the researcher identified themes and patterns in the collected data. Findings- The discussion of this research is focused on the application of a metacognitive approach in developing Arabic reading skills.  The results of this study can provide insight into the effective use of a metacognitive approach in improving Arabic reading skills and can become the basis for developing more effective curricula and learning methods. Research Limitation/Implications- This research is still theoretical without any field tests as a comparison instrument.  However, this research can be the first step in assessing and evaluating this approach, whether it is based on the scientific hypothesis of experienced Arabic learning experts or not.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to describe the competence of INSURI Ponorogo Arabic learning media lecturers with a standard perspective and teacher professionalism, according to The Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (AFMLTA). This research is qualitative and uses a case study approach. Carried out in the INSURI Arabic language education study program. Research data in the form of competence and professionalism of PBA Learning Media lecturers are limited to projections of student receptive ability development through Arabic cartoons accessed from Marhaban Academy Channel on the https://www.youtube.com/@MarhabanAcademy link. The sources of research data are lecturers, students, and learning activities in the classroom. Data collection techniques are carried out by observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis of research data is carried out by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results showed, referring to the standards of AFMLTA foreign language teachers. Lecturers of Arabic learning media courses have met AFMLTA standards, namely mastering pedagogic, professional, and social competencies. Pedagogic competence is colored by the ability to manage classes. Professional competence is aimed at the formulation of learning objectives before lecturers step into the learning process. Meanwhile, social competence is aimed at creating a learning atmosphere by adjusting the curriculum and culture of the INSURI Ponorogo campus. Thus, the existence of AFMLTA can measure the competence and professionalism of language teachers outside Australian countries.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the steps, advantages, and disadvantages of teaching Mahārah Kalām using the Mubāsyarah method with the Iṭṭiṣāli approach. The research employs library research with a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection involves documentation, with primary sources including an article by Baroroh et al., entitled "Arabic Learning Based on a Communicative Approach in Non-Pesantren Schools," and secondary sources being books and scientific articles relevant to the study. Data analysis follows Milles and Huberman's theory, including data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The study identifies several steps in Mahārah Kalām learning using the Mubāsyarah method with the Iṭṭiṣāli approach: introduction, presentation of short dialogue formats by teachers, student writing of short dialogues, practice of dialogues, questioning, teacher reading of student dialogues, and evaluation. Advantages of this method include improved speaking skills, expanded vocabulary, pronunciation closer to native speakers, and the ability to analogize with other topics. However, its disadvantages include suitability only for small groups, the need for teachers to speak like natives, reliance on teachers to prepare materials, avoidance of the mother tongue, difficulty in identifying teacher mistakes, and the flawed theoretical basis equating mother tongue acquisition with foreign language learning. The research implies that the Mubāsyarah method is not the sole method for teaching Arabic speaking skills.
