Abstract

The high poverty rate in Indonesia can be addressed through the contribution of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which absorb approximately 57.78% of the workforce in the informal sector. However, this sector faces risks of workplace accidents and occupational diseases that can impact workers' productivity and well-being. Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) account for 42% to 58% of all recorded occupational diseases globally. Preliminary observations identified symptoms of MSDs, such as neck stiffness and back pain, among furniture workers in the informal sector of Tunjungsekar. This study aims to determine the relationship between the risk levels of work posture and individual factors, including age, years of service, body mass index, education level, and physical activity, with MSD complaints among furniture workers. The methodology employed a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach, involving 34 samples collected through total sampling techniques. The results indicated significant relationships between years of service (p=0.028) and education level (p=0.043) with MSD complaints, while the variables of work posture risk (p=0.437), age (p=0.644), body mass index (p=0.638), and physical activity (p=0.528) did not show significant associations. In conclusion, workers with over 10 years of service and low education levels are at a higher risk of experiencing MSD complaints. Keywords: musculoskeletal disorders, furniture workers, informal sector.

Abstract

Occupational Diseases (PAK) in the form of pain complaints in the skeletal system that cause the work process are called Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). PT. PLN Yantek workers are at risk of experiencing MSDs complaints because the work is done manually and the work posture is less ergonomic. This study aimed to analyze the effect of implementing full-body stretch and digital-based manual handling education and to assess its effectiveness on MSDs. The study used a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 26 Yantek workers. The intervention was given at 10 meetings, MSDs complaints were measured using the Nordic Body Map questionnaire and analyzed using a paired sample t-test with a significance of α = 0.005. The study's results on the full body stretch variable and digital-based manual handling education in the experimental group showed a p-value of 0.000, which means there are differences in MSDs complaints before and after the intervention. The full-body stretch intervention results showed a mean difference of 13.27, while the digital-based manual handling education intervention showed a mean difference of 10.58. Therefore, both interventions have the same effect in reducing MSDs complaints, but whole-body stretching showed greater effectiveness. Keywords: musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), full body stretching, digital-based manual handling education

Abstract

Appropriate Technology-Based Occupational Safety and Health Risk Management Training at Selecta Recreation Park Batu City, East Java Province  Abstract The increasing number of tourists in Batu City, particularly at Selecta Recreational Park, is also accompanied by an increased risk of accidents. Selecta Recreational Park is a tourism sector player that has implemented Occupational Safety and Health in the workplace, but there is still a gap between the implementation of risk management in the field and the capacity of its human resources (HR). To address this issue, appropriate technology-based K3 risk management training was conducted. This training is innovative because it integrates a simulation-based appropriate technology approach with the HIRADC method in the high-risk tourism sector, which has not been widely implemented in similar locations. The aim is to improve the knowledge and attitudes of Selecta Recreational Park employees regarding occupational safety and health (K3). The method used is participatory action with stages of preparation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Interventions are carried out through lectures, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Determining Control (HIRADC) workshops, first aid simulations, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The results of the pre-test and post-test show a significant increase in the participants' knowledge, attitudes, and skills in implementing risk management. In addition, participants were able to compile a HIRADC table and accurately perform a first aid simulation. The conclusion of this activity was that appropriate technology-based training was effective in strengthening officer preparedness, supporting a zero-accident culture, and creating a safe and comfortable tourism environment.

Abstract

Background: Law Number 1 of 1970 concerning Occupational Safety requires all sectors, including tourism, to implement Occupational Safety and Health (K3). Taman Dolan Batu City, as a tourist destination, has a risk of work accidents, so it needs mitigation efforts through First Aid for Accidents (P3K). Objectives: This study aims to analyze the effect of leaflet-based education and simulation on workers' knowledge and first aid skills. Methods: The research design used a quasi-experiment conducted with a sample of 16 people divided into two different intervention groups. This study uses questionnaire instruments and observation sheets that have been proven valid and reliable through statistical tests (Pearson, Aiken's V, and Cronbach Alpha) and experts' validation of leaflet educational media. Data analysis used Wilcoxon Signed Rank, and Mann-Whitney U tests with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The results of hypothesis testing showed that both educational methods significantly improved workers' knowledge and skills (p<0.05). The combined intervention of leaflet and simulation proved more effective than the single method. Conclusions: Leaflet-based education and simulation together are more effective in improving the knowledge and skills of first aid workers at Dolan Park. Researchers recommend that managers routinely hold K3-related training to reduce the risk of workplace accidents. Future research is recommended to involve a larger sample and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the intervention provided.

Abstract

Background: First aid skills for respiratory emergencies, particularly shortness of breath, are crucial for university health volunteers who often serve as the first responders. However, theory-based learning alone is not always adequate for developing practical competencies. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of theoretical education compared to the combination of theory and simulation in enhancing the knowledge and skills of university health volunteers in managing cases of shortness of breath. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-posttest design was conducted among 40 student volunteers of the Indonesian Red Cross Volunteer Corps (KSR-PMI), aged 18-20 years, who were equally assigned to a theory-only group or a theory-plus-simulation group. The intervention consisted of two 45-minute sessions. Knowledge and skills were assessed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann–Whitney U Test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: Knowledge significantly improved in both groups (p < 0.05), with no significant difference between them (p = 0.204). Skill performance improved markedly in the simulation group, increasing from 0% to 100%, compared with only 20% in the theory-only group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: While theoretical education effectively enhances knowledge, it is insufficient for developing practical skills. Integrating simulation-based training significantly improves psychomotor competence and better prepares university health volunteers to manage respiratory emergencies.

Abstract

Introduction: Ultra-slow degradation makes LDPE a major source of environmental pollutant. Considering the global annual plastics consumption is in the range of 0.5 to 1 trillion units, there is a pressing need to understand the environmental and health effects of plastics and particularly those of LDPE. The study is based on the exploration of biologically converted LDPE by superworms (Zophobas atratus) and mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) and the application of the frass of these worms as a liquid biofertilizer for plant growth. Methods: This study was carried out using an experimental design of zero-waste vermicomposting. To monitor N retention at larva survival, frass production and nutrients in frass (N-P-K and carbon balance), worms were fed with either organic feed (pollard) or LDPE plastic. Subsequently, vermicompost of tea was prepared from the frass and applied as a fertilizer in hydroponic cultivation of Brassica rapa L. (bok choy) for determining the growth performance using specific quantitative traits including height, leaf number, and root length. Results and Discussion: There were no significant differences in nutrient composition either between the worm castings derived from those fed on plastic and wheat bran or between those fed on plastic and wheat bran. Over the 30 days of growth, bok choy plants fertilized with mealworm-derived vermicompost from plastic feed showed improved the other treatment groups in root growth, plant height, leaf count. Conclusion: Using frass from plastic-fed worms does not negatively impact plant growth. However, adding organic feed is necessary to optimize the nutrient content required by plants.
