Abstract

Background: Non-specific low back pain is a type of pain that is located in spine area and does not radiate to the legs. Non-specific low back pain can limit daily activities and cause inability to do work. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) versus sensory motor training (SMT) in the treatment of ultrasound therapy (UST) and kinesio tape (KT) insertion in non-specific low back pain. Methods: This research is an experimental with a randomized pre-test and post-test control group design, in which the study participants were divided into two groups randomly. The control group (n = 10) is given UST+PNF+KT combination, while the treatment group (n = 10) is given UST+SMT+KT combination. Therapeutic evaluation measures include: pain scale with a numeric rating scale, range of motion with a goniometer, and lower back disability with the Indonesian Version of Oswestry Disability Index. The intervention is given 3 times per 1 week for 3 weeks. Results: The results showed improvement in pain, range of motion, and lower back disability in each group (p<0.05). However, there were no significant differences when compared between groups. Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be concluded that the UST+PNF+KT combination has the same good results as the UST+SMT+KT combination in improving pain, range of motion, and lower back disability in non-specific low back pain.

Abstract

Background: Neck pain is a common health problem in the working population. When studied by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), the problems that arise in non-specific neck pain include: neck pain, limited joint motion, and decreased functional ability in carrying out daily activities. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of combination ultrasound therapy (UST) and deep cervical muscle exercise (DCME) versus combination ultrasound therapy (UST) and soft tissue mobilization (STM) on non-specific neck pain. Methods: This research was experimental with a randomized pre-test and post-test control group design, in which the study participants were divided into two groups randomly. The study participants were 20 people who were divided into the control group (n = 10) who were given the combined intervention of UST and DCME while the treatment group (n = 10) were given the combined intervention of UST and STM. Therapeutic evaluation measurement tools include: pain scale in the form of numeric rating scale and neck disability in the form of neck disability index. The research was carried out in the independent physiotherapy practice in Denpasar and Badung. The intervention was given 3 times in 3 weeks. Results: The results showed a decrease in neck pain and disability in each intervention group (p <0.05). However, there were no significant differences when compared between groups. Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be concluded that the combination of UST and DCME has the same results as the combination of UST and STM in reducing neck pain and disability in non-specific neck pain.

Abstract

Background: Cervical radiculopathy is a condition that characterized by pain and/or sensorimotor deficits caused by compression of one or more cervical nerve roots. The aim of this case series is to serve as a preliminary study to determine the effectiveness of adding bilateral neurodynamics to the intervention of ultrasound therapy and manual traction in cervical radiculopathy. Methods: The research writing method used CARE (CAseREport) guidelines, which consisted of: introduction, patient information, clinical findings, timeline, diagnostic assessment, therapeutic intervention, follow-up and outcome, and discussion. The measuring instrument used in this study was the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) in assessing tension pain when given neurodynamics and neck disabilities using the Indonesian version of the Neck Disability Index (NDI). The intervention was carried out 12 times (3 times a week for 4 weeks) and a follow-up was done at week 5. Results: The results showed that there was an improvement in the score of neck pain and disability in the 2 patients both at post-test and at follow-up. Conclusion: Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the application of additional bilateral neurodynamics in the intervention of ultrasound therapy and manual traction can help reduce pain and improve neck disability.

Abstract

Background: The tennis elbow is the most frequently diagnosed condition in the elbow and the most common cause of musculoskeletal pain in the elbow. Pain, limitation of joint motion, decreased muscle strength, and activity limitations as well as obstacles in participating in life are caused by tennis elbow. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of ultrasound therapy and dry needling versus ultrasound therapy and MET in reducing disability due to tennis elbow. Methods: This research was a randomized controlled trial using a pre and post-test control group design. The participants were 24 people who were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 (n = 12) was given the combined interventions of ultrasound therapy and dry needling, while group 2 (n = 12) was given the combined interventions of ultrasound therapy and MET. The interventions were given 12 times.  Disability was measured using the Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation Questionnaire (PRTEE). This study was conducted in the physiotherapy private practices in Denpasar and Badung Regency in Bali. Results: The result showed that the disability significantly decreased before and after the intervention in both groups (p<0.05). There was also a significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: It can be concluded that ultrasound therapy and dry needling are more effective than ultrasound therapy and MET in reducing disability due to tennis elbow.

Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) in the knee causes various health problems, including pain and limited movement that reduces productivity and quality of life, causing disability. This study aims to determine the comparative effectiveness between home-based exercise and kinesiotape in lowering pain and disability in the elderly with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: It was an experimental study with a randomized pre-test and post-test control group design. There were 30 participants divided into 2 groups: Group 1 with Kinesiotape and Group 2 with Home-Based Exercise. The intervention was given 3 times per week for 4 weeks. Disability was measured by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and pain was measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Results: The p-value for WOMAC and VAS scores before and after intervention is <0.001 in kinesiotape and Home-Based exercise interventions, which states that there is a significant improvement in lowering disability. Comparative analysis between groups also showed p< 0.001. Conclusion: Kinesiotape and home-based exercises are both effective in reducing knee pain and disability in elderly with knee OA. However, home-based exercises have proven to be more effective than kinesiotape. Home-based exercises are recommended as the primary intervention to decrease pain and disability in elderly individuals with genetic knee OA.
