Abstract

Introduction: Medical students are considered an academic group highly prone to stress, with prevalence rates ranging from 28.5% to 78%. Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) has been shown in several studies to correlate positively with stress reduction. A 2021 Rakuten Insight survey across 12 Eastern and Southern Asian countries reported that 41% of respondents kept pets to alleviate sadness and stress, while 36% cited companionship. Pets are seen as valuable emotional resources and adaptive tools for managing stress. Aims: This cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the levels of stress experienced by preclinical medical students. The study specifically aimed to explore the relationship between the degree of attachment these students have to their pets and their reported stress levels. Methods: A total of 100 preclinical students took part in this study. The pet attachment scores and stress levels were assessed using standard questionnaires. Data from this study were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test and Post Hoc analysis. Results: The average pet attachment score in this study was 49.73. The pet attachment scores were higher in female participants and participants who kept their pets for over nine years. Most respondents experienced moderate stress levels (81%). Significant differences were found in the pet attachment score to mild-moderate stress levels (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The results obtained from this study lend support to the hypothesis that attachment to pets has a positive impact on stress levels.

Abstract

Sleep quality reflects an individual’s satisfaction with the sleep process, which is essential for cognitive, psychological, metabolic, and cardiovascular health. Poor sleep quality is prevalent among medical students and may elevate their risk of metabolic syndrome. This study investigated the association between sleep quality and body mass index (BMI) with metabolic syndrome risk factors in medical students. This was a cross-sectional study involving 98 first- to third-year preclinical medical students. Sleep quality was assessed by using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) questionnaire, BMI was measured from body weight and height, and metabolic syndrome risk factors were evaluated through waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. Data was analyzed using Chi square and Fisher’s exact test. Results showed that 54.08% of students had good sleep quality and 42.86% had a normal BMI. However, 59.18% of students exhibited at least one metabolic syndrome risk factor, including central obesity (51.02%), hypertension (20.41%), dyslipidemia (13.27%), and high fasting blood glucose (1.02%). There was no association between sleep quality and metabolic syndrome risk factors. The BMI showed no association with fasting blood glucose and HDL cholesterol level. However, BMI showed a significant association with waist circumference (p<0.001) and blood pressure (p = 0.005). These findings emphasize the importance of addressing the MBI in mitigating metabolic syndrome risks among medical students.

Abstract

Background: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is an important indicator of cardiorespiratory health and a strong predictor of mortality. Several factors affect CRF, including arterial oxygen content (CaO2), which is influenced by hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and oxygen saturation. However, the correlation between CRF and Hb remains inconclusive. This study aimed to explore the correlation between Hb concentration and oxygen saturation post-exercise with CRF, especially in young adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in October 2024, involving 68 medical students from a university in Jakarta, Indonesia. Consecutive stratified sampling was applied based on gender. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) and the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q+) were used as screening tools. Hb concentration and oxygens saturation were measured using a digital hemoglobinometer and pulse oximetry, while CRF was evaluated using a 20-meter multistage test. Additional measurements included body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and heart rate. Data were analyzed with correlation and multiple linear regression tests. Results: The most participants were female (57.4%). Normal Hb concentration was found in 80.9% with mean Hb levels of 14.15±1.54 g/dL in males and 12.9±1.37 g/dL in females. CRF correlated positively with Hb concentration (p=0.005; r=1.13), and negatively with oxygen saturation post-exercise (p=0.005; r=-0.4). These correlations were significant in males and not in females.  Conclusion: Hb concentration and oxygen saturation post-exercise significantly correlate with CRF in males, whereas BMI and physical activity play stronger roles in females. Maintaining optimal Hb levels, preventing anemia, and promoting active lifestyles are essential strategies to support CRF, cardiovascular health, and long-term wellness.

Abstract

Abstract

Degenerative processes in the central nervous system contribute to in cognitive function decline in the elderly. Physical exercise may prevent this decline. However, elderly people often require modified forms of activity to ensure both safety and effectiveness. This study aimed to investigate the the effect of chair-based exercise (CBE) on cognitive function in elderly people. This study was conducted a two nursing homes using a two-group pretest and posttest experimental design with a control group. All participants were informed about the procedures of study, provided written informed consent, and underwent an initial cognitive assessment using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). Participants in the intervention group engaged in CBE sessions over a four-week period. Following the intervention, cognitive function was reassessed in both groups. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze within-group changes, while independent t-tests were used to assess between-group differences in cognitive function scores. A significant improvement in cognitive function was observed in the intervention group after the four-week CBE program (p = 0.008). Moreover, a significant between-group difference in cognitive score changes was found (p = 0.003), favoring the intervention group. In conclusion, a four-week CBE program significantly improved cognitive function among elderly participants. These findings support the use of CBE as an accessible and effective intervention to promote cognitive health in elderly people.
