Abstract

The drama Shirreer is an adaptation of the Turkish horror film Siccîn 1 into Arabic theater, which requires an in-depth study regarding the application of classical Arabic drama structures. This study aims to understand how the conventions of classical Arabic drama structures and their intrinsic elements are applied in the context of cross-cultural and media adaptations, particularly in the horror genre, which is thick with supernatural elements. This adaptation also shows how modern drama can combine tradition and innovation. The method employed is structural analysis, utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach. Primary data in the form of the Shirreer script is analyzed through the theoretical framework of the five stages of classical Arabic drama: Al-Muqaddimah, Al-Taqdim, Al-Tadhakhum, Al-Hall, and Al-Khatimah. This analysis also considers the distinctive characteristics of Arabic drama, including the use of the fus?a language, moral-religious themes, and the influence of classical Arabic rhetoric. The research was conducted through direct observation of the performance on December 20, 2024, at the Central Java Cultural Park and analysis of video recordings available on the UNS Oase Theater YouTube channel. The results of the analysis show that the three acts in the Shirreer script are mapped into the five stages of Arabic drama structure. Acts 0–1 serve as Al-Muqaddimah and Al-Taqdim, which introduce the characters and the conflict. Act II becomes Al-Tadhakhum through a supernatural confrontation. At the same time, Act III serves as Al-Hall and Al-Khatimah, presenting a tragic resolution and a profound moral message about the dangers of misusing spiritual power. The play successfully integrates the structure of classical Arabic drama into modern horror theater by maintaining important elements such as Quranic verses, fus?a diction, and religious themes, demonstrating the relevance of classical structure in a meaningful contemporary work.

Abstract

Family resilience refers to a family's capability to positively cope with challenging circumstances and emerge feeling stronger, more equipped, and more self-assured than before. This study aims to examine factors contribute to family resilience within the Muslim community. As the largest Muslim population globally, Indonesian Muslims can serve as a representative sample to illustrate the concept of family resilience within the Muslim population. We hypothesized that religiosity, and family communication may contribute to the formation of family resilience. Participants are Moslems from several area in Indonesia (N=406). The data analyzed by Multiple Regression Analysis. Result shows that religiosity and family communication significantly contribute to family resilience (R Square = 43.3). Family communication contributes higher (28.9%) than religiosity (14.3%). Some future recommendations: (1) programs and policies that encourage families to engage in shared religious practices and improve communication skills can be instrumental in fostering a supportive environment that helps families navigate challenges; (2) subsequent studies can explore mediating factors, such as socioeconomic status or external stressors, that may influence this relationship; longitudinal studies could assess how these dynamics evolve over time, particularly in response to changing societal conditions.

Abstract

Laskar Hezbollah which consists of scholars and students have a major contribution in maintaining the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). However, the role of Hezbollah in the historiography of Indonesian history has not yet received an adequate place in the struggle to defend the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia when compared to the role of the army and other national parties. This study was conducted to answer the above problems so that it can enrich the writing of Indonesian National HistoryThis study uses a historical research methodology with a sociological and theological approach. The sources in the study will be presented in a descriptive analytical manner, both primary and secondary. Then in looking at the problem, the theory or concept of collective behavior is used in the context of nationalism and patriotism. There is also a finding of this study that based on facts and field data Hezbollah has a major contribution in defending the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. Thus, this study wants to complement the reference works of Indonesian history that have not placed the role of ulama and santri in significantly defending the Unitary Republic of Indonesia. Second, this study wants to show that the ulama and santri have a high love for their country so that their nationalism and patriotism cannot be doubted. In other words, this study wants to strengthen the study conducted by Musa (2001) which concluded that there was a very close relationship between religion and nationalism. Third, national unity from various elements of the nation became an important factor in a revolution so that Indonesia succeeded in getting its sovereignty from the hands of the Dutch in late 1949 and early 1950. In this context, the role of Muslims cannot be ignored in fulfilling the independence of the Republic of Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Modern Arabic literature during the Neoclassical period (al-madrasah al-ihya’iyyah) serves not only as a medium of aesthetic expression but also as a strategic cultural response to the socio-political conditions faced by Muslims under the pressure of Western colonial hegemony. Qasidah Al-Hamziyyah Al-Nabawiyyah by Ahmad Syauqi is one of the monumental masterpieces that uniquely combines elements of praise (madih) to the Prophet Muhammad with sharp social criticism (naqd ijtima’i) towards the reality of his time. Unfortunately, academic readings of this work have often been limited to formalistic aspects, such as meter and rhetoric studies, so that the ideological dimensions and content of resistance hidden behind the beauty of its poetic diction have not been comprehensively revealed. This study aims to fill this gap by employing descriptive qualitative methods, drawing on Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The analysis focuses on three layers of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth (signification), with data sourced from the closing verses of Al-Hamziyyah, which contain a transition from praise to complaint (syakwa). This study found that Ahmad Syauqi constructed three main myths as a form of symbolic resistance. First, the myth of the "Delegitimation of Western Modernity," in which the symbol of Ruma (Rome) is used to undermine the narrative of European legal superiority and affirm the justice of Sharia. Second, the myth of the "Sacralization of Art," in which the diction 'ara'is (bride) naturalizes poetry as a sacred tool for spiritual transactions. Third, the myth of "Syafa'at as the Absolute Solution," which places Islamic spirituality above the rationality of materialism as a way out of the ummah's crisis. Through Barthes's approach, it is revealed that Al-Hamziyyah is not merely a religious text, but a counter-hegemonic discourse that affirms the superiority of Islamic spirituality in the face of modern civilization.

Abstract

Background: Islamic education integrates knowledge, faith, and morality to foster holistic character building and sustainable social development, while addressing the existing research gap concerning the limited scholarly attention toward classical Islamic poetry in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Objective: This study examines the values of Islamic education and their relevance to the SDGs as reflected in the poetry of Sayid Idrus bin Salim Al-Jufri through Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, analyzing five selected stanzas (n = 5) from his poem al-‘Ilm. Method: Using a descriptive qualitative-analytical design, this research applies Barthes’ three levels of semiotic analysis denotative, connotative, and mythological to interpret educational, moral, and spiritual meanings. The five stanzas were selected through purposive sampling based on their representation of Al-Jufri’s educational and ethical values. The analysis was supported by semiotic tables, literature documentation, and validation through theoretical and source triangulation to ensure analytical reliability. Results: The findings reveal core Islamic educational values including the pursuit of knowledge, moral integrity, social responsibility, and devotion to God. These values align with SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The study also highlights the theoretical significance of integrating Barthesian semiotics with Islamic literary tradition, and its practical contribution to strengthening value-based educational discourse. Conclusion: The poem al-‘Ilm serves as an effective semiotic medium for value-based education, contributing to sustainable human development and offering insights for future research on sustainability-oriented Islamic education in the modern era.

Abstract

Abstract

This study compares two Arabic poems from different historical periods, namely Waṣf al-Jannah by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah and Ādam wa Firdawsuhu by Nāzik al-Malā’ikah, to examine how each poet constructs the imagery and meaning of paradise within distinct aesthetic systems. The research employs a qualitative literary approach based on Wellek and Warren’s intrinsic and extrinsic framework, complemented by Tötösy de Zepetnek’s systemic approach. The data consist of poetic texts that represent images, symbols, and thematic expressions of paradise in both poems. The primary data are drawn from recognized editions of Waṣf al-Jannah, contained in Hādī al-Arwāḥ ilā Bilād al-Afrāḥ, and Ādam wa Firdawsuhu, included in Nāzik al-Malā’ikah al-Mujalladu al-Awwal. The secondary data are obtained from relevant scholarly studies in Arabic literary criticism. Data were collected through close reading and textual documentation focusing on diction, imagery, symbolism, and emotional tone related to the representation of paradise. Data analysis was conducted by examining intrinsic elements such as theme, imagery, diction, and symbolism, as well as extrinsic aspects including socio-historical context and literary conventions, which were then interpreted using a systemic perspective. The findings suggest that Ibn Qayyim portrays paradise through vivid sensory imagery inspired by Qur’anic descriptions, employing metaphors of light, gardens, flowing rivers, and eternal rewards to evoke spiritual longing and reinforce religious motivation. In contrast, Nāzik portrays paradise as an inner and psychological realm marked by loss and existential tension, using symbolic language to reflect modern concerns such as violence, alienation, and human fragility. The study concludes that representations of paradise are shaped not only by theological perspectives but also by cultural and aesthetic environments, demonstrating how poetic discourse bridges classical and modern Arabic literary traditions.
