Abstract

Banana peels, often considered agricultural waste, are rich in bioactive compounds with significant antioxidant potential. This study evaluates the antioxidant activity of a combined ethanol extract from Cavendis (Musa acuminata) and Kepok (Musa paradisiaca) banana peels using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The extraction was performed via maceration with 96% ethanol, yielding 9.13%. Phytochemical analysis identified key compounds including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids/terpenoids, which are known to exhibit antioxidant properties. The extract demonstrated strong radical scavenging activity with an IC50 of 6.47 ppm and an Antioxidant Activity Index (AAI) of 5.40, comparable to Vitamin C (IC50 = 6.29 ppm; AAI = 5.56). These results indicate a synergistic effect from combining the two banana peel varieties, enhancing antioxidant efficacy beyond that reported for individual peels. This study supports the potential use of Cavendis and Kepok banana peel extracts as sustainable natural antioxidants for application in food preservation, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. Future work should focus on optimizing extraction methods, detailed phytochemical profiling, stability assessment, and in vivo validation to advance product development and maximize health benefits.

Abstract

Cosmetics based on natural ingredients are increasingly favoured due to their perceived safety and environmental friendliness. One traditional plant with potential for development is water cress (Impatiens balsamina L.), which has long been utilised as a traditional medicine. This research aims to design a formulation and evaluate the preparation of cream nail polish with the additional component of water cress powder. This plant is known to contain flavonoids such as kaempferol and quercetin, which are beneficial for maintaining nail health. The study employed an experimental method with four formulations of nail polish, namely F0 (without powder), F1 (0.3%), F2 (0.5%), and F3 (0.75%). The preparation process involved the use of additional materials such as PVP, titanium dioxide, castor oil, methylparaben, and alcohol. Evaluation included organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, spreadability, and hedonic testing involving 30 adolescent to adult panellists. The results indicated that all formulations exhibited good physical stability, pH values in accordance with standards, and high levels of preference, particularly for formulation F3 in terms of texture and final appearance. The addition of water cress seed powder provides additional benefits for nail moisture and protection. Thus, water cress seed powder can be considered as an alternative ingredient in the production of safer and more environmentally friendly cosmetic products. This research is expected to open new opportunities in the development of herbal-based cosmetics

Abstract

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a leading cause of acute liver failure, with acetaminophen being the most frequent etiological agent. Overdose induces formation of the toxic metabolite N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), resulting in glutathione depletion, oxidative stress, and hepatocellular necrosis. This study aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic extract of Terminalia catappa L. leaves in male mice (Mus musculus) with acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury. A post-test only control group design was employed using 20 mice divided into five groups: negative control (Na-CMC), positive control (N-acetylcysteine), and three treatment groups receiving T. catappa extract at doses of 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg BW. Acetaminophen was administered intraperitoneally at 500 mg/kg BW. Serum SGPT and SGOT levels were quantified spectrophotometrically, and phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. Extract administration significantly (p < 0.05) reduced SGPT and SGOT levels compared to the negative control, with a clear dose-dependent trend; the 600 mg/kg BW group achieved biochemical parameters approaching those of the N-acetylcysteine group. The hepatoprotective effect is likely mediated by flavonoid-driven antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. These findings indicate that T. catappa extract is a promising, safe, and cost-effective plant-based hepatoprotective agent, meriting further investigation toward clinical application as an adjunct therapy for drug-induced hepatotoxicity
