Abstract

Sinularia sp. is one of the most widespread and abundant types of soft coral in Indonesian waters. The soft coral Sinularia sp. haves many bioactive compounds to use as a patogen antibacterial agent. The aim of this research was to compare the antibacterial activity from the soft coral Sinularia sp. against the pathogenic bacterial strain Escherichia coli. Samples of the soft coral Sinularia sp. were collected by SCUBA diving equipment at around Pahawang Island, Pesawaran Regency, Lampung, Indonesia, in July 2025. In this study, two species of soft corals, Sinularia polydactyla and Sinularia flexibilis, were found at the research site. The extract yields for soft coral species used methanol resulted in higher values compared to ethyl acetate and hexane. The antibacterial activity of the extract soft corals against the pathogenic bacteria E. coli used ethyl acetate solvent better than methanol and hexane. Soft coral extract for Sinularia sp. with ethyl acetate solvent can be used as antibacterial candidates against the pathogenic bacteria E. coli.

Abstract

Community participa-tion is a key factor in supporting the sustainability of coral reef ecosystems, particularly in small island communities that rely heavily on marine resources. Community knowledge is considered one of the factors that may influence participation in conservation efforts. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between community knowledge and participation in coral reef ecosystem conservation on Sebesi Island, Lampung Province, Indonesia. A quantitative survey approach was employed using structured questionnaires administered to 30 respondents selected from the local community. The research instrument was tested for validity and reliability prior to data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis at a significance level of 5%. The results indicated that community knowledge regarding coral reef conservation was generally in the good category, as was the level of community participation in conservation activities. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between community knowledge and participation (r = 0.690; p < 0.05), indicating that higher levels of knowledge were associated with greater community involvement in coral reef conservation. These findings suggest that improving environmental knowledge through education, outreach, and community empowerment programs may enhance public participation in coral reef ecosystem conservation. The study provides empirical evidence to support community-based conservation strategies for the sustainable management of coral reef ecosystems on small islands.

Autoecology of Ceratium furca and Chaetoceros didymus as potential harmful algal blooms in tourism and aquaculture sites at Teluk Pandan Bay, Lampung, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 5670-5680. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) phenomenon has been observed around tourism and aquaculture sites in Teluk Pandan Waters, Lampung Bay. The dominant potential HABs found in Teluk Pandan waters were Ceratium furca and Chaetoceros didymus. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the environmental physicochemical factors and the abundance of C. furca and C. didymus as potential HABs. Phytoplankton samples were collected from four stations (Hurun Bay, Sidodadi Coastal Waters, Sari Ringgung Beach and Cikunyinyi Bay) during May-August 2022. Physical parameters (temperature, depth, brightness, current velocity and salinity), as well as chemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, pH, phosphate, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia) were all measured in conjunction with phytoplankton sampling. Canonical correlation analysis and multiple regression were used to predict the effect of environmental parameters on phytoplankton density. Blooms of C. furca were found with the highest density at 5.417×106 cells/L in Cikunyiyi Bay, while C. didymus predominated in Hurun Bay (2.890×104 cells/L), Sidodadi Coastal Waters (3.923×104 cells/L) and Sari Ringgung Beach (3.531×104 cells/L). The main factors influencing the increase in C. furca population at Cikunyinyi Bay were pH, phosphate and nitrate. The increase in C. didymus population at Sidodadi Coastal Waters was affected by phosphate, nitrate and nitrite, while phosphate and nitrate influenced the increase in C. didymus population at Sari Ringgung Beach. Potentially HABs density was found to be higher near intensive shrimp farming sites. The use of fertilizer and artificial feed in high quantities is thought to be responsible for increased water eutrophication. Periodic monitoring and consistent determination of environmental carrying capacity for intensive shrimp farming activities are required to control HABs and ensure the sustainability of aquaculture and tourism activities in Teluk Pandan Waters.

Hasani Q, Anisa A, Damai AA, Yuliana D, Yudha IG, Julian D. 2023. Changes in density level and mangrove land cover on Teluk Pandan Coast, Lampung, Indonesia, after 10 years of community-based management. Biodiversitas 24: 3735-3742. The mangrove ecosystem in the Teluk Pandan coastal area, Pesawaran District, Lampung Province, Indonesia, is part of the mega-biodiversity of mangroves in Indonesia. Specifically, the mangrove in this region has changed due to tourism, aquaculture, settlement activities and coastal abrasion. This study aimed to assess the changes in density level and area change of the mangrove forests at five coastal villages in Teluk Pandan during the period of community management from 2010 to 2020. The effort and success of the rehabilitation were reported in this study can be useful as a consideration of sustainable management of mangrove ecosystem both in Lampung and in other areas in Indonesia. Mangrove area was estimated through field surveys and data processing of satellite imagery from Landsat 5 in 2010 and Landsat 8 in 2020. The mangrove density level and area change were calculated by layering images of mangrove distribution from different years. The classification of mangrove density was determined based on the NDVI value. Satellite imagery was compared with field data collected from 20 observation points at five villages to ensure the density level and interpretation accuracy. Image data analysis showed the changes in mangrove area from 109.80 ha in 2010, an increase of 16.39% to 127.80 ha in 2020. The area of mangrove forest in the rare category decreased by 49.35%, the moderate category increased by 39.13%, and the dense category increased by 109.71%. The study confirmed the successful effort to manage and preserve mangroves in Teluk Pandan Sub-district. Eventually, community-based mangrove management (CBMM) and cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder management (co-management) has become the core strategy in the successful management of mangrove at five coastal villages in Teluk Pandan Sub-district.

Abstract

Abstract. Julian D, Reza M, Putra MGA. 2024. Length-weight relationship and condition factors of Lepturacanthus savala in Lampung Bay, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 510-515. Scarce information exists regarding the growth aspects of ribbon fish (Lepturacanthus savala Cuvier, 1829) in Lampung Bay waters. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the growth characteristics as fundamental information for managing L. savala fishery resources in the waters of Lampung Bay. The method of this quantitative and descriptive study was to analyze the growth of L. savala. Length, weight, and sex ratio data were acquired through a purposive sampling method based on the catch results from gillnet landings at Lempasing Fishing Port, Bandar Lampung. A total of 347 specimens were collected during data collection from May to August 2023, with a length range between 21.6-59.8 cm of total length (TL) and the highest frequency observed in the length interval class of 33-36 cm, consisting of 105 specimens. The results showed that the growth pattern of L. savala is positively allometric, with a value of b equal to 3.0915. The sex ratio between males and females is 1:2.4. The condition factor values ranged from 0.0442 to 2.9281, with the highest average value observed in June for males and females, reaching 1.03.
