Abstract

The need for effective mathematics learning is closely tied to the availability of instructional tools that can foster students' higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). However, such tools remain limited, particularly within vocational education settings. This study aims to develop mathematics learning instruments based on a problem-based learning (PBL) approach that are valid, practical, and effective in enhancing HOTS among vocational high school students. The developed products intended for Grade XI students in the second semester consist of lesson plans, student activity sheets, and learning outcome test instruments. The research employed a 4-D development model, consisting of the stages of define, design, develop, and disseminate. The instruments were tested through three phases: expert review, limited trial, and field trial. Participants included mathematics teachers and students from two different vocational schools. Data were collected using validation sheets, teacher and student assessment instruments, and learning outcome tests. The findings indicate that the developed instruments meet all three criteria: validity, practicality, and effectiveness. Expert validation confirmed that the lesson plans and student activity sheets are valid, the limited trial showed that the tools are practical for classroom use, and the field trial demonstrated that the instruments effectively improved students’ HOTS. In conclusion, the developed mathematics learning instruments not only provide an empirically tested and innovative alternative to conventional teaching methods but also contribute significantly to strengthening vocational mathematics education. By promoting students’ HOTS, these tools help prepare learners with essential 21st-century competencies.

Abstract

Learning motivation is a critical factor influencing students' academic achievement, especially in subjects like mathematics, which is often perceived as challenging. Students with high motivation are generally more enthusiastic, engaged, and active in their learning process. They tend to take the initiative in understanding the material and seek additional resources to reinforce their knowledge. On the other hand, students with low motivation are less likely to actively participate, leading to lower engagement and achievement. This study aims to investigate the correlation between students' mathematical aptitude and their motivation to learn, particularly focusing on how motivation influences their performance in mathematics. A quantitative approach using a correlational technique was applied in this study. The sample consisted of 77 seventh-grade students who were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through a mathematical aptitude test on algebraic concepts and a questionnaire designed to assess students' learning motivation. The data analysis included normality and linearity tests, followed by Spearman’s correlation analysis to determine the relationship between mathematical aptitude and motivation. The analysis revealed that the data followed a normal distribution and had a linear relationship between the variables. The correlation coefficient was found to be 0.544, with a significance value of 0.000, indicating a moderately strong and statistically significant positive relationship. This suggests that students with higher motivation tend to have better mathematical aptitude. The findings emphasize the crucial role of learning motivation in academic success, especially in mathematics. Motivated students are more likely to achieve higher academic performance. Therefore, it is important for schools and teachers to create a supportive and engaging learning environment that fosters motivation, which can ultimately lead to improved mathematical learning outcomes.

Abstract

The reasearch aim to measure improvement in the understanding concept mathematics abilities after using the Discovery Learning Model. The understanding concept mathematics abilities is one of the important goals in learning, providing an understanding that the material taught to students is not just memorization, but more than that with understanding students can better understand the concept of the subject matter itself. In this study, researchers will use the Discovery Learning model which is one of the learning models that requires students to find and find their knowledge in accordance with their own abilities, so that students' ability to understand concepts can be improved. The results of this research showed there is an increase in students' understanding of mathematical concepts.

Abstract

Slow learner have difficulties in mathematics subjects so it is necessary to develop math module based on local wisdom Gusjigang Kudus. The purpose of this research is to know the result of questionnaire of  slow learner need to develop the module of math based on local wisdom, and  result of interview with teacher. The type of research is qualitative. The subject is the teacher and the slow learner in SD 1 Muhammadiyah Kudus. Techniques of data collection using questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. Based on the results of the questionnaire analysis, the needs of slow learner concluded that slow learner need a mathematical module that can help understand the material, help solve daily problems, and take advantage of local wisdom in the area. Based on the teacher interviews, the module that can help slow learner does not exist yet, and the books in the schools do not emphasize issues related to local wisdom.

Abstract

Numeracy skills are an essential competency for solving problems in daily life. However, the development of mathematics learning remains a challenge today. Therefore, a study is needed that not only describes students’ numeracy skills but also identifies development needs based on empirical data. This study employed a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and descriptive qualitative methods, based on an analysis of students’ responses to numeracy problems and interview data. The subjects who participated in the numeracy test in this study were 146 seventh-grade students from five junior high schools in Kudus Regency, selected using purposive sampling, while the subjects for the interviews consisted of 15 students and 5 mathematics teachers. The results of this study indicate variations in students’ numeracy achievement across indicators, reflecting differences in the level of mastery in applying mathematical concepts across contexts. These variations provide a basis for identifying more specific needs for the development of students’ numeracy skills. These findings indicate that mathematics instruction has not yet optimally facilitated the development of thinking processes that require comprehensive numeracy skills. The implications of this research highlight the urgency of developing learning designs that are more targeted, contextual, and aligned with students’ ways of thinking. Such designs should be developed based on real needs to support the development of students’ numeracy skills more effectively
