Abstract

The tradition of mangaji during the death is a form of acculturation of Minangkabau culture and Islam, perceived as part of the prophetic traditions. However, some people interpret this tradition as bid'ah, and even, some others accused the practice as haram because it was part of jāhiliyyah traditions. This living hadith study is going to investigate the practice using a phenomenological approach during field research. The result of this study indicates the tradition of mangaji during the death in the Lareh Nan Panjang community is an acculturation between Islamic teachings based on the Qur'an and hadith. Historically mangaji refers to the interpretation of Shaykh Burhanuddin, a scholar who spread Islam in Padang Pariaman during the sixteenth and sevententh centuries. The syaikh changed the people’s habits of grieving at death with reciting verses of the Qur'an, ṣalāwāt, ẓikir, taḥlīl and prayers ‘led by tuangku or labai. These recitations have been compiled in the mangaji guidebook. In a nutshell, mangaji has many values including worships, educations, empathies, maintaining harmonies, helpings and caring, solidarities, brotherhoods and affections.

Abstract

This article discusses the hadith transmitters involvement in Kufa politic dynamic in the early time of Islam Period, which was experiencing a long range of social turmoils. These turmoils occurred from 40 H/661 AD until the end of the Umayyad dynasty in 125 H/743 AD. This article adopts a historical approach to conceive of the dynamic of politics among the hadith transmitters. This research revealed that the hadith transmitters built the city of Kufa. The behavior related to discrimination toward the opponents and the disappointments on the Umayah Dynasty triggered many rebellions such as al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Alî ibn Abî Ṭâlib, Ibn al-Zubayr, Mukhtâr al-Thaqafî, al-tawwâbûn, and Zayd ibn ‘Alî. These turmoils involved Sa‘d ibn Abî Waqqâṣ and al-Mughîrah ibn Shu‘bah. We argue that the hadith transmitter influenced the hadiths they narrated. Based on the investigation of the two hadith contents that they narrated indicated that they took the side of the Mu‘âwiyah Dynasty and ‘Alî’s followers as the opponents.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the development of theories, the hadith science, and the manipulative hadith narrators—medallist—which is related to the ethical principle. They massively manipulated the identity of the narrators in the cabin period. It was done by disguising the teacher's identity, suggesting that the teacher was a credible person. The author used qualitative research methods by taking the numbers of sources in the early Islamic period before analyzing them conceptually-relationally. The author found that dynamicity had been done in the attempt to manipulate the narrators, which later the number started to increase as the generation changed. I argued that the manipulations in tadlis are contrary to ethical principles. Internal factors such as the narrator's motivation make the credible hadith effect it. In addition, external factors were also noted, such as the condition of teachers who were still small and were not considered reasonable by hadith critics.

Abstract

Hanan Attaki's interpretation of the verses of faith on Youtube is phenomenal. He made Youtube his interpretive idea so that it could become evidence of the development of interpretive media from using old media to becoming new media. Hanan's interpretation is very different, he can invite the younger generation to increase their faith in God by using the language of today's children. This can trigger Hanan's many YouTube subscribers. Until now, Hanan's subscribers have reached 2.3 million with 88 million viewers. The purpose of this study is to examine the interpretation of the verses of faith which Hanan uses as the basis for preaching. In addition, this research identifies Hanan's method of interpreting verses and elaborating on subscriber comments. This study uses a qualitative method. Data was obtained from Hanan's YouTube Channel and other related references. The data is classified and interpreted through content analysis. Based on these data, it was found that Hanan used Qs. Ar-Ra'du verse 28, Qs. At-Taubah verse 124. And Qs. Al-Ankabut verses 1-3 and Qs. Al-Baqarah verse 214 is understood by Hanan as a verse of faith. He understands the importance of the younger generation believing in Allah and will go through phases including the ibtila phase (test phase) and the tamkin (help) phase. This led to many positive responses from subscribers who found Hanan's interpretation very interesting. This reinforces Marshall McLuhan's media theory quoted from Roudlotul Jannah's research which says that interpreters will be accepted by the younger generation if they can adapt to technology

Abstract

The tradition of mangaji kamatian is a form of acculturation of Minangkabau and Islamic culture in Minangkabau. The community interprets this tradition as a form of practice of the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. However, some other people interpret this form of tradition as an act of bid'ah (heresy), and some understand it as a form of the practice of jahiliyah, which is haram (forbidden) to carry out. This study uses field research methods using a phenomenological approach with a living hadith model. The results showed that the mangaji kamatian tradition that lives in the Lareh Nan Panjang community is acculturation between Islamic teachings with clear arguments in the Qur’an and hadiths with the customs and cultures that exist in the area. Historically, the mangaji kamatian tradition is a form of interpretation of Shaykh Burhanuddin, a Muslim scholar who spread Islam in Padang Pariaman in the 16-17 century on verses of the Qur’an and hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad SAW related to takziyah. Shaykh Burhanuddin slowly transformed the people who at that time wept when they were stricken by death with a procession of reciting verses from the Koran, prayers, zikir, tahlil and prayers.

Abstract

A child's birth in Islamic teachings will be welcomed with akikah, but the archipelago people have local traditions in welcoming this event. The dialectic between religious teachings and local traditions gave birth to new traditions: assimilation or acculturation of Islamic teachings and community traditions. The tradition of holding Paja in Nagari Kamang Mudiak, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, is one of the traditions born from the Islamic dialectic process and the Minangkabau's local culture people. This research aims to describe the tradition of carrying out Paja due to the dialectic of akikah teaching in Islam as a guide to the Prophet's Sunnah in the socio-cultural context of the society in the Religion District of West Sumatra. This research is qualitative research using a phenomenological approach and cultural interpretation. This research found that society tries to articulate Islamic teachings about akikah sunna contextually. The old and young dialectic influences the implementation of this tradition in its development in Minangkabau. This dialectic patterned its implementation into two models, namely traditionalist and modernist. The tradition of making the Paja continues with both models. As for the motive for the implementation of this tradition is for theological and cultural reasons.

Abstract

Epistemology of Area's Hadith Study: Concept, Early Emergence, and DynamicsThis study focuses on the efforts of regional conceptual construction of hadith studies as a new issue in contemporary hadith science discourse. As a past event, the hadith was identically territorial. The area refers to the place where the Prophet and the narrators lived, migrated to other areas and stayed there for a long time. Uniquely, this area is included by hadith critics in their identification of the narrator after mentioning his name, kunyah, and laqab. The data has not been written in academic form in terms genealogy as well as the developments and the changes. By using qualitative approach, in exploring the literature of early, middle and contemporary hadith sciences, this article intends to fill this void. This research found that practically the study of regional hadith had been started at the beginning of the 3rd century and was done by Ahmad bin Hanbal (241 H), followed by ar-Ramahurmuzi (+360 H) and other hadith scholars. The study of regional hadith was sustained and dynamic based on regional phrases in the sub chapters and titles of hadith science literature. This study also found the phrases amṣār, buldān, awṭān, marākiz ta`līm, and madrasah al-hadīṡ. The shifts of the phrases to regional hadith studies is considered as an adoption of area studies that emerged in American universities in the early twentieth century. Regional hadith studies require a multidisciplinary paradigm in order to produce novelty with a unique hadith genre in a region

Abstract

At the time of the Prophet Muhammad, the Companions, and the Tabi'in, the interpretation of the Qur'an was carried out directly orally and listened to by Muslims. Along with the times, there have been commentators who are active in interpreting the Qur'an as evidenced by the emergence of popular classical commentary books such as the interpretation of Ibn Kathir and others. In today's era where the development of science and technology is increasingly advanced, various forms of interpretation appear on various social media such as Youtube and Facebook. One of them is Ustadz Zulkifli Muhammad Ali through a Youtube account called UZMA Media TV Channel. This study aims to determine the method of Ustadz Zulkifli in interpreting the verses of the Qur'an as a proposition in lecturing starting from January 2, 2020-January 3, 2021. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach where the data is obtained from the results of a collection of UZMA video lectures and books, journals, articles, and theses. The results of this study are in the form of a classification of the themes of UZMA lectures in the past year, including around the end of time, life guidelines (practice and worship), ethics, and muamalah, the Covid-19 outbreak. The maudhu'i method of interpretation has not met several criteria and has a systematic interpretation. There are two lecture responses, namely rejectionist and receptionist.

Abstract

This study explores the Salafi-Wahabi movement's typology of hadith understanding and its consequences for Islamic law. This qualitative study employs the identity politics theory and the hadith understanding theory. Identity politics is utilized to assess the Salafi movement, and the concept of hadith understanding is used to examine different understandings of hadith. This study found that Salafi developed as a response to the behavior of bid’ah (innovation in religion), currents of syncretism, pluralism, liberalism, and the legitimating influence of Shia. The Salafi believes that Islamic organizations in Indonesia have failed to respond and have even been dissolved by the current situation, leading Muslims to stray away from hadith. Their identity politics is defined through numerous projects, including returning to Quran and sunnah slogans, putting on robes (long garments for both men and women), beards, and kuniyah. This is a way for them to justify their existence to oppose conventional identities. This study contends that the Salafi group's textual understanding of hadith promotes rigid Islamic law, which leads to societal conflict. As a result, the government and religious institutions should work together to develop Washatiyah Islam as a counter-ideology and discourse.  Abstrak: Kajian ini bertujuan untuk membahas tipologi pemahaman hadis kelompok Salafi-Wahabi dan implikasinya pada hukum Islam. Studi ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan teori politik identitas dan teori pemahaman hadis. Politik identitas digunakan untuk menganalisis Salafi sebagai sebuah gerakan, sedangan teori pemahaman hadis menganalisis varian pemahaman hadisnya. Artikel ini menyimpulkan bahwa kelompok Salafi berkembang akibat reaksi mereka terhadap perilaku bid'ah, sinkretisme, pluralisme, liberalisme dan pengaruh Syiah. Bagi mereka, organisasi Islam yang mainstrem di Indonesia gagal merespons bahkan ikut larut oleh arus tersebut sehingga umat Islam semakin jauh dari hadis. Politik identitas mereka diartikulasikan dengan berbagai proyek, yaitu kembali kepada al-Quran dan sunnah, pakaian gamis, jenggot dan penggunaan kuniyah. Hal ini merupa- kan cara untuk melegitimasi eksistensi mereka guna meresistensi identitas mainstream. Penelitian ini beragumen bahwa pemahaman hadis kelompok Salafi yang tekstual melahirkan hukum Islam yang kaku dan mengakibatkan konflik sosial. Karena itu, pemerintah dan organisasi keagamaan hendaknya mengembangkan Islam washatiyah sebagai kontra ideologi dan wacana.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze Muhammadiyah and Nahdhatul Ulama's understanding of the Hadith of prostration. The aspects examined are the sources of reference and how these two organizations interpret through their official websites. This research uses a qualitative method by referring to data uploaded on both websites. The author interpreted the data using a discourse analysis approach. The author's assumption is that all worship practices in Islamic mass organizations that exist today cannot be separated from the role of the Prophet SAW and the Companions in the application of practices in mass organizations in Indonesia. This article proves that both organizations recognize the existence of the Hadith of prostration. Based on the source of the hadith they issued the procedure and its virtues. From this understanding, it turns out that both Muhammadiyah and Nahdhatul Ulama understand it textually. This finding refutes the common assumption that Nahdhatul Ulama tends to be contextualist in understanding hadith.
