Abstract

The inability of adolescents to complete their development and the lack of effective coping strategies can cause adolescents to engage in self-harm behavior. If left unchecked, this action can have a negative impact, so self-control is needed in the form of self-control. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-control and self-harm behavior in adolescents. The type of research used is descriptive correlation with a cross-sectional design. A total of 335 respondents were selected based on the proportionate stratified random sampling technique from a total of students in grades VII, VIII, and IX spread across 30 classes. Data collection used the Brief Self-Control Scale questionnaire and the Self-Injury Behavior Tendency questionnaire directly and was analyzed using the Spearman rank test. The results of the study showed that there was a relationship between self-control and self-harm behavior (p-value = 0.000; r = -0.569), which means that self-control and self-harm behavior have a strong relationship with a negative (opposite) relationship direction. The higher the self-control, the lower the self-harm behavior that is carried out. Self-control in adolescents greatly influences how adolescents behave in the situations they face, so it is important for adolescents to have high self-control in order to prevent self-harming behavior.

Abstract

Introduction: Depression is a condition that can cause elderly people to experience mental or emotional disorders due to stress and loneliness. Stress is something that can disturb the elderly caused by anxiety and loneliness due to changes in roles in the family or in their lives. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between stress and loneliness with depression in elderly people in Banjar Kawan, Tampaksiring, Bali. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with 68 elderlies recruited as respondents based on inclusion criteria by using purposive sampling techniques. The instruments used included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3, and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). The results of this study showed that most of the respondents aged 64 years, female, last education was elementary school, marital status was married with an income of < IDR 500,000. Results: The correlation results showed a significantly weak positive correlation between stress and depression (r = 0.284, p = 0.019) and loneliness with depression (r = 0.254, p = 0.037). The results of multiple linear regression showed that stress (β = 0.266) has the most effect on the occurrence of depression compared to loneliness (β = 0.039) so the higher the stress felt, the higher the symptoms of depression in the elderly. Conclusion: It is hoped that the elderly could improve their health by actively participating in many activities in order to prevent the symptoms of depression from getting worse.

The respondents were 219 high school teenagers aged more than or equal to 17 years who were selected using purposive sampling techniques. This research was conducted in a senior high school in Denpasar Bali from January to May 2023. Data collection used the MSPSS questionnaire to measure social support, the ESSA questionnaire to measure academic stress, and the SIS questionnaire to measure suicidal ideation. Data were analyzed using the Spearman's rank test because the data was not normally distributed (α≤0.05). Result: The results of this study indicate that there was a significant relationship between social support (family, friends, and special people) and suicidal ideation (p=0.002; p=0.000; p=0.000); however, in the academic stress variable, it was found that there was no significant relationship with suicidal ideation in adolescents (p=0.085). Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of social support as a protective factor in adolescents in reducing suicidal ideation. Nursing education can be provided to teachers and students in an effort to prevent early mental health problems.

Abstract

Nursing professional courses delivered in actual clinical learning environments primarily aim to provide direct access and create authentic interactions within the community. Furthermore, this program aims to develop critical thinking skills and apply previously acquired knowledge in the classroom. This shift in the academic process often becomes a new stressor among nursing students because it requires high adaptation skills in a relatively short period of time to gain professional abilities and become a registered nurse. This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional method that explores mental health status among 36 nursing students who are currently undergoing a clinical training period toward the professional nursing program at Udayana University. Self-Rating Questionnaire (SRQ 20) implemented by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia to measure mental health status. Findings revealed that in the past 30 days, during the clinical training period, participants demonstrated physical, psychological, and social responses to stressors with common reactions appearing in the form of fatigue, anxiety, and difficulty in performing assigned roles. The majority of participants also experienced difficulty thinking clearly due to the effects of stress. Further statistical analysis confirmed the correlation between each dimension of mental health state (physical, psychological and social responses and the effects of stress) with gender (p<0.05). These findings imply the need for stress management education and possibly mentoring programs for nursing students, especially those pursuing clinical training period toward the professional nursing program. This program will help them develop better adaptability to new systems.

Abstract

While suicide is considered a serious global social problem, there is a lack of accurate system in documenting the cases. It is possible to utilize anonymous data gathered from suicide hotlines, but it may not be available for use due to lack of consent. This Letter to the Editor aims to address the matter while providing insights of its own.

Abstract

The lack of access to health services in several regions in Indonesia can have an impact on reducing knowledge and public health levels in the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The community service programme through KOLOK (cholesterol, ear, throat, blood glucose) health services aims to provide health services to the people of Bengkala Village, which has a deaf community. The procedures carried out include checking weight and height to determine body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol levels, as well as ear and throat examinations. The subjects in this health service were Bengkala Village residents who were registered at the service location. Based on the evaluation results, the BMI showed obese (12.2%) and very obese (16.3%), hypertension (31.5%), high cholesterol (55.6%), and high blood glucose levels (54.5%). The number of people with ear and throat disorders was 35.9%, with the most common type of disorder being cerumen obturation. Overall, more than 50% of the community had normal BMI, blood pressure, and ear and throat conditions, but more than 50% of the community had high cholesterol and blood glucose levels. The community needs education to understand healthy lifestyle behaviours that impact nutritional, metabolic, and ear and throat health problems. Access to communication and the village’s distance from health facilities such as hospitals, health centres, and specialist services remain challenges. In addition, the development of a community health cadre programme and the integration of technology to improve effective communication to support the education process and the improvement of public health services are also needed by the village.
