Abstract

Catfish sangkuriang (Clarias gariepinus) is one of the aquaculture commodities with great potential to be developed in Indonesia to support the demand for feed. Efforts to reduce dependence on imported feed raw materials for fish feed is continued. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crasspies) leaf which contains phytochemical compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, steroids and saponins is an alternatif raw material for fish pellet component. This study aimed to determine the addition of fermented water hyacinth leaf meal in fish feed on the growth, survival rate, and blood profile of sangkuriang catfish. In total 150 fish (Average initial weight 5.45 ± 0.02 g) were randomly divided into triplicates of five groups, containing 10 fishes per group. Group one is a control group, P1 (10% of non fermented water hyacinth leaf meal), while P2, P3 and P4  were treatment groups of fish fed with 10 , 15, and 20% fermented water hyacinth leaf meal by Aspergillus niger. At the end of the 42 days of treatment, growth, survival rate, and blood profile of all fish were determined. The results showed that the addition of 10% water hyacinth leaf meal fermented by Aspergillus niger had an effect on the growth of final weight, body weight gain and spesific growth rate (p 0.05) in comparison to all groups. However, the addition of any concentration of water hyacinth leaf meal did not affect on the feed conversion ratio and survival rate value. Further, the addition of water hyacinth leaf meal had a significant effect (p 0.05) on the erythrocytes, leukocytes and hemoglobin of fish, but did not show a significant effect on the values of hematocrit and platelets.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the phytochemicals content of Terminalia catappa leaves extract (TCL) and its effects on the survival and blood profiles of ornamental fish (Betta sp) Ninety fish were randomly assigned into six triplicates groups and reared in various concentration of TCL: 0 (control), 125, 250, 375, 500, 625 ppm for 30 days. Temperature, Dissolve oxygen (DO), and pH were monitored during the trial. After 30 days, survival, Red Blood Cells (RBC), White Blood Cells (WBC), haemoglobin (Hb), lymphocyte, and total protein serum (TPS) were analyzed. Based on the phytochemicals test, saponin, triterpenoid, quinon, phenolic, tannin, and flavonoid were detected on the TCL. Temperature and DO were not affected by any concentration of TCL. The lowest pH (5.05) was found in fish medium immersed with 625 ppm of TCL. Adding TCL above 375 ppm resulted in significantly higher survival, RBC, and Hb. The highest WBC was found in fish immersed with 625 ppm whereas the lowest lymphocyte was found in fish immersed with 375 of TCL. However, immersing any various concentration of TCL did not affect on the TPS. In summary, immersing TCL above 375 ppm is beneficial to enhance survival, RBC, WBC, and Hb of Betta sp.How to CiteNugroho, R. A., Manurung, H., Saraswati, D., Ladyescha, D. Nur, F. M. (2016). Abstract

This study was conducted to compare the effects of dietary substitution of fish meal (FM) with black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal (BSFM) and Manihot esculenta leaves meal (MEM) on the growth and feed efficiency of Oreochromis sp. Four concentrations viz: P1 (25%): 50g BSFM and 25g MEM, P2 (50%): 100g BSFM and 50g MEM, P3 (75%): 150g BSFM and 75g MEM, P4 (100%): 200g BSFM and 100g MEM were prepared and tested against control without FM replacement. Each diet was fed to three replicates groups of fish at a rate of 5% of body weight two times per day for 30 days. At the end of the trial, growth parameters, Feed conversion rate (FCR), and feed efficiency (FE) were evaluated. The results showed that fish fed dietary substitution of FM with combination ratio of BSFM and MEM higher than 50% significantly improved all growth parameters, FCR and FE. It is therefore suggested that the partial (higher than 50%) or total replacement of fish meal with combination of BSFM and MEM in the diet of Oreochromis sp can be used as fish meal substitution to obtain better growth and feed efficiency.

Abstract

Paederia foetida Linn, known locally in East Kalimantan as Sembukan, is one of the plants that is used as raw materials of traditional medicine in Indonesia. The sembukan contains a variety of chemical compounds that can affect on the development of the mice fetus. Current research aimed to evaluate the effects of boiled-water extract of Sembukan leaves on the weight and length of fetus, the total number of fetus, and fetus survival. In total of 12 pregnant mouse were randomly divided into three groups, namely control (K) without treatment, P1 treated by 175 mg/kgbb extract, and P2 treated by 350 mg/kgbb extract. After 18 days of pregnancy, mouse were sacrificed to evaluate the morphometry and survival of the fetus. The results showed that Sembukan leaves extract caused a significant (P<0.05) different on the fetus weight, amount of fetus and the number of life fetus between control (K) and treatment groups (P1 and P2). However, the treatment of any doses (P1 and P2) of Sembukan leaves extract did not show significantly differences (P>0.05) on the fetus length and the number of dead fetuses. This finding concluded that Sembukan leaves is beneficial to increase the weight and the number of live fetus of mice.

Abstract

Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) oil is currently an insect oil that potentially replaces fish oils in animal feed. However, there are limited information on its benefits and nutritional comparison of BSLF oil to fish oil. Present study was to evaluate the benefits of BSFL oil in animal feed and compare the BSFL to Fish oil. Collected data of BSFL oil in the animal feed and its physiological effects was obtained from several articles of  reputable journal and compiled into a table. Meanwhile, BSFL was reared and extract their oil to determine the fatty acid composition and compare to fish oil. The current study indicated that BSFL oil can be used in various animal feeds, such as aquafeed, broiler feed, and pets. The BSFL oil which is included in the feed showed an improvement in growth and other physiological responses of animals. Meanwhile, in comparison to fish oil, BSFL oil has a similar composition of fatty acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n3) is detected in the BSFL oil, though the quantity is much lower than in fish oil.  Further, the BSFL oil also contains lauric acid. In conclusion, BSFL oil can be an alternative feed ingredient to substitute fish oil and has beneficial to the growth and physiological responses of the animal.
