Abstract

Abstract

Malaria infections are often associated with the activation of coagulation and fibrinolytic systems. An increase number of fibrinogen levels in severe malaria and the increase of fibrinogen also stimulated the increase of erythrocytes sedimentation rate. The aim of this study is to find out about the effects of high parasitemia to erythrocyte sedimentation rate in patients with uncomplicated tropical malaria. Samples are collected using the Purposive Samplings method. To determined the effect of parasite density to erythrocytes sedimentation rate (ESR) levels (mm/h), the data were analyzed using the Non-Parametric Kruskal Wallis test (α=0,05). From 8 samples, 2 subjects (25%) has ++ (2+) densities with 35 and 46 mm/h; 3 subjects (37,5%) has +++ (3+) densities with 10, 65 and 70 mm/h; and also 3 other subjects (37,5%) has ++++ (4+) densities with 21, 44, and 70 mm/h. The Non-parametric Kruskal Wallis test shows that p-value 0,932 >α, means there is no effect of parasitic density on ESR levels in patients with uncomplicated tropical malaria. Using the ESR as the only-main biomarker in assessing the severity of malaria is an inaccurate idea because the ESR is more likely a non-specific test, therefore another blood test is needed to establish a diagnosis of malaria severity.

Abstract

Abstract: Referring to the national TB control program, the diagnosis made by microscopic examination of sputum by direct and definitive diagnosis by culture examination. Direct sputum examination is the gold standard method of microscopic examination of a recognized WHO TB and confirmation done by the method of culture. Research "Sensitivity Test Using Ogawa Medium and Lowenstein Jensen Medium Againts Micobacterium tuberculosis Bacteria Growth Results ", performed to identify and compare the results of Ogawa medium and culture on Lowenstein-Jensen medium and analyze the sensitivity between the two medium. A descriptive observational study was conducted. Study sample is a sample saturated with a consecutive sampling. Sample size retrieval technique based on sample collection time, which is June 8 through July 18, 2011, a total of 53 samples. Research is to test the sensitivity variables as independent variables and the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria on the Ogawa medium and LJ medium as a bound variable. The results of the study, of 53 samples, 21 (39.6%) samples were negative, so that 32 (60.4%) samples tested positive for M tuberculosis and the total growth of 36 samples (67.9%). Lowenstein Jensen (LJ) medium is more sensitive than the Ogawa medium, both in terms of speed of growth and in the number of colonies that grow. For the determination of Mycobacterium species needs to be done other tests to confirm. Culture results can also be used for comparison using the PCR method, OAT resistance by culture methods.

Abstract

Colony counter tools are used to count bacterial colonies. The high price constraint makes manual calculation the preferred alternative. In this study, Innovations were made to the SI PINTER tool by replacing the power source with a battery and using digital prayer beads connected to a marker to display the results on the screen. The purpose of this study was to develop the SI PINTER tool as a microbiology laboratory support to improve the accuracy of bacterial colony counts. Standardization of the SI PINTER tool is done by comparing the results of calculations using a conventional Colony Counter and without using equipment (manual) to get accurate results of the number of bacterial colonies. This research method is quasi-experimental and the data was analyzed by One Way ANOVA test. The results of the One Way ANOVA statistical test showed a p-value = 0.996 > 0.05, indicating that there was no significant difference between the results of the number of bacterial colonies using conventional Colony Counter, SI PINTER and manual calculations. The SI PINTER tool can be used according to its function as a microbial colony counter and has portable capabilities because it only relies on electrical energy from batteries

Abstract

Background: Laboratory diagnosis of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever includes the IgM & IgG RDT (Rapid Diagnostic Test) examination which differentiates primary and secondary dengue infection. The presence of inflammation in the body caused by the dengue virus needs to be examined for C-Reactive Protein. Methods: This research is an analytical observational study with a cross sectional approach. Thesample used is a plasma sample of a patient diagnosed with DHF with a positive IgM or IgG RDT result. Results: Positive IgM RDT results were 6 people (17%) and positive IgG were 30 people (83%). The results of a qualitative CRP study were 24 people (67%) with positive CRP levels. Semi-quantitative CRP average level for positive IgG was29.33. The results of the Spearman's Rank statistical test obtained a value of p = 0.003 <0.05 which showed a significant result. Conclusion:Clinically it shows that the more positive IgM or IgG RDT results obtained, the higher the CRP level which indicates the severity/inflammation that is formed in the body.
