Abstract

This thesis was an implemented linguistics observe regarded from wishes evaluation. The researcher analyzed the tourism personnel who labored inside the tourism and subculture branch of Rokan Hulu, Riau Indonesia. Instruments of the research were questionnaire and interview. The targets of this observe were (1) to find out the needs of tourism personnel in English language the use of their administrative center and (2) to find out the problems that the tourism personnel come across while the usage of English language abilities of their activity. This thesis dependent as the sector studies the usage of qualitative approach as in consists of a form of academic studies that includes accumulating statistics the use of forms containing not unusual pop-up questions, accumulating phrase or picture statistics, and accumulating statistics from a small variety of humans or locations. The outcomes of the evaluation listening and speaking are maximum essential English talent of tourism personnel in Rokan Hulu's tourism and subculture branch, however it's also taken into consideration because the maximum complex to them. The tourism personnel in the department of tourism and subculture in Rokan Hulu has fewer problem in reading and writing abilities.

Abstract

The abilities of students’ public speaking are different at some level. This study investigates the students’ speaking skills in describing people in the Non-English Department. The type of this research was a quantitative descriptive study design. The instrument of this study was the test; the type of the test was public speaking in describing people. The population of this study was 37 students in the 2nd semester of sports and health education. The sampling technique was total sampling. The sample was 37 students. Primarily based on the result, the researcher discovered that one student  (2%) has a good score, 17 students (46%) have an average rating, and 19 college students (51%) have a fair rating. It means that the score of students' speaking skills in describing humans became a truthful stage. It brought about mispronunciation of phrases (body, eyes, nose, and colour), messy grammar, lack of vocabulary, fluency gradual, and comprehension most effective a little and quite simple.

Abstract

Assessing public speaking abilities is crucial in contexts such as the Puteri Indonesia Contest, where effective communication is key. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, data was collected from video documentation. The population of the research is 20 students. The sample of the research is 10 students who take the data from 10 contestants from Puteri’s Indonesia Speech. The data were analyzed and obtained from 3 raters through the PIPA Persuasive Informative Presentation Assessment) Model. It consisted of organization, supporting materials, content, articulation, nonverbal communication, and visual aid. The result shows that one speech of the contestants was categorized in Advanced level in in nonverbal communication and articulation.  Then, supporting materials, and content reached a proficient level. Lastly, there was no visual aids available during the grand final speech competition, they only got a minimal level of visual aids. Thus, visual aid is the weaknesses of PIPA model in the speech of the contestants. It was suggested to investigate for the next research.

Abstract

Students’ perception is highly important to evaluate the learning materials. The purpose of this study was to determine students' perceptions of using the intercultural learning material in the drama subject. The population of this research was the sixth-semester students of the English Department at Pasir Pengaraian University. The sample of this research was obtained by total sampling technique. The sample of this research was 34 students. The instrument of this research was the questionnaires; using the Likert scale. It was developed by using intercultural learning and perception. It was distributed to 34 students consisting of 28 female students and 6 male students. The data were analyzed by using a statistical package to find out the total perception of the students. The results showed that students had positive perceptions that were obtained from the three indicators, namely motivation, difficulties, and material efficacy of using intercultural learning material in the drama subject. The perception of motivation, difficulties, and material efficacy were categorized as positive perceptions. It has a percentage of 77.5%, 74.8%, and 75.8% for each indicator. Thus, intercultural learning material is effective learning material, especially in the drama subject.

Abstract

The Speaking skill commonly used as a sole way to interact and communicate with another individual in daily basis or even in more formal basis like academic or even business. But still students still tend to have anxiety when speaking in another language because of several causes and reason. Therefore, this research aims to identify what is the cause and type of the problems of anxiety at English Language Education (ELE) students Universitas Internasional Batam. This study conducted qualitative method for the research. Peneliti menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. The research instruments were questionnaires. To extend the deeper analysis, this study also conducted an in-dept interview adopted from SLSAS Woodrow (2006) and FLCAS by Horwitz et al. (1986). From the result the researcher can define the types and causes of the ELE students speaking anxiety at Universitas Internasional Batam. Therefore, the learning process at English Language Education needs to be equipped with sufficient linguistic competences, such as grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

Abstract

The lecturers still seem unconfidence to teach English as Foreign Language. They need the learning material to reveal the gap between English and the student’s own culture. This study aims to find out the validity and reliability of the intercultural learning material for Drama subject. The research design was quantitative research. The instrumentation of this research was the questionnaire. The subject of this research was 29 students. The results showed that the validity of the ILM model was 92,5 %. It means that the ILM model is valid to use for Drama subject. Then, reliability of intercultural learning materials was 0.774; the ILM model is reliable to use for Drama subject. Based on this result, the intercultural learning materials can implemented because they were categorized as valid and reliable. Thus, the learning materials will be an alternative to link between English and Malay cultures in the lesson process and drama performances.

Abstract

Penelitian ini meneliti tentang kosakata hotel. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui penguasaan kosakata hotel mahasiswa semester enam program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Pasir Pengaraian. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif. Sampel dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari 28 mahasiswa program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris semester enam Universitas Pasir Pengaraian. Instrumen yang digunakan peneliti untuk mengumpulkan data adalah instrumen tes. Data diambil dengan tes pilihan ganda. Ada empat indikator yang digunakan dalam tes yaitu kata kerja, kata benda, kata sifat, dan makna. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwasanya nilai rata-rata siswa pada setiap tes dijabarkan seperti berikut: nilai rata-rata indikator penguasaan kosakata kata kerja siswa (76,42), nilai rata-rata indikator penguasaan kosakata kata benda siswa (75,00) nilai rata-rata indikator penguasaan kosakata kata sifat siswa (75,00) nilai rata-rata indikator penguasaan kosakata kata sifat siswa (75,00) 70,71) dan rata-rata penguasaan kosakata makna indikator siswa adalah (53,57). Sedangkan rata-rata hasil dari seluruh pengujian adalah (68,92). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penguasaan kosakata hotel mahasiswa semester enam Universitas Pasir Pengaraian berkategori BAIK dengan nilai rata- rata (68,92).

Abstract

The students are still finding difficulties in formatting the sentences in the thesis acknowledgments. This study aimed to find out the types of derivational morphemes and the function of derivational morphemes used in the students’ thesis acknowledgments. This study is qualitative descriptive research. The instrument of this study was the documentation. There were nine acknowledgments of the student’s thesis.  The data were analyzed by using the descriptively characteristic analysis. The result of the data analysis, the researcher found four types of derivational morphemes in the thesis acknowledgment, which are noun derivation, verb derivation, adjective derivation, and adverb derivation. In this study, researchers also found the types of derivation morphemes that are dominantly used and those that are rarely used. Thus, the derivational morpheme should be comprehended by the students to write the acknowledgments academically. Keywords : Derivational_morpheme; Acknowledgments; Higher_education

Abstract

This study aims to determine the expressions of impoliteness spoken by students in classroom interactions based on the Strategies of Impoliteness at Muhammadiyah Rambah High School. Researchers have studied five Strategies of Impoliteness: Bald on Record Impoliteness, Positive Impoliteness, Negative Impoliteness, Sarcasm or Mock Impoliteness, and Withhold Impoliteness type. This research is descriptive qualitative, where the data source is in the form of field notes recorded by researchers when conducting research and audio and video recordings during student interaction in class. In this research, the researcher researched two eleventh-graders majoring in science. In the results, researchers found that some students tend to say sentences or use inappropriate words when uttered by a student in class; as for what makes students say the utterance, it is because students are used to saying the sentence or phrase that is not polite in everyday life. From the study results, the researchers also concluded that some students utter impolite speech to get the attention of their friends or the teacher and relieve their boredom when studying in class.
