Abstract

Background: Nephrotoxicity due to the use of drugs such as gentamicin can cause kidney damage characterized by increased creatinine levels. The use of medicinal plants as nephroprotective agents is a potential alternative; one such plant is yellow rope stem (Anamirta cocculus (L.) Wight & Arn.), known to contain antioxidant compounds. Objective: This study aims to assess the nephroprotective activity of yellow rope stem ethanol extract and determine the optimal dose for reducing gentamicin-induced increases in creatinine levels in mice. Method: The study was conducted experimentally with a pre-test and post-test design using the maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent. Mice were divided into six groups, namely negative control, positive control (vitamin E), healthy control, and three treatment groups with varying extract doses. Creatinine levels were measured using the Jaffe method with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Results: The results showed that the yellow rope stem ethanol extract at a dose of 77 mg/kgBW was able to reduce creatinine levels significantly (p<0.05), while lower doses did not show a significant difference. Conclusion: Ethanol extract of yellow rope stems has nephroprotective activity at an optimal dose of 77 mg/kgBW, thus having the potential to be developed as a herbal agent to protect kidney function.

Abstract

Red Fruit (Pandanus conoideus L.) is a typical Papuan plant that is rich in bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins, which have the potential to act as antioxidants. This research aims to analyze the chemical structure of anthocyanin compounds from red fruit ethanol extract using Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. FTIR is a spectroscopic tool widely used to characterize or detect functional groups and qualitatively identify compounds in samples. Anthocyanins act as antioxidants and have various biological activities such as preventing cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent, and characterization was performed using FTIR in the wave range 4000-450 cm⁻¹. The results of the research that has been carried out show that the ethanol extract of red fruit contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins. The FTIR results of red fruit extract show the presence of functional groups characterized by the presence of the O-H, C-O-C, C-O, and C=C functional groups which are important indicators of the antioxidant properties of anthocyanins. This research confirms the potential of Red Fruit as a natural source of anthocyanins which are useful as antioxidants

Abstract

Introduction: Honey has been widely used as a nutritional supplement and medicine. Many herbal honey products are developed as nutritional supplements that are combined with SFM to make them more effective, but there are still many shortcomings due to the unpleasant taste produced, unattractive physical appearance, and high susceptibility to oxidation reactions that cause severe damage to the quality of honey, especially in the content of active substances, viscosity, and pH, which can cause the effectiveness of honey to decrease and result in product failure as nutritional supplements to treat stunting problems. We have developed an herbal honey multi-nutrient supplement that combines honey with black cumin oil and Curcuma xanthorriza extract called HBCX. Adding Curcuma xanthorriza extract and black cumin oil to honey is expected to increase honey's benefits as an antioxidant. This study aims to determine the physicochemical characteristics (pH and viscosity), heavy metal contamination content, polyphenols, and antioxidant activity. Methods: This experimental laboratory research was conducted at the Pharmacy Lab, Faculty of Pharmacy, UAD. The viscosity and pH of HBCX were observed using an Ostwald viscometer and a pH meter. Total phenol determined by Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and gallic acid standard. Determination of antioxidant activity using the DPPH method. The data are presented in a quantitative descriptive manner and matched with the SNI honey standard. Results: The results showed that HBCX herbal honey had a higher viscosity than the sampled honey from the market but was still lower than the SNI requirements. HBCX honey has a lower pH than sample honey products from the market but still complies with national standards. HBCX honey is safe from heavy metal contamination and contains polyphenols. The antioxidant activity of HBCX honey is relatively high, with IC50=54.78 ppm. Conclusion: HBCX has high polyphenol content, is safe from heavy metal contamination, and has sufficient antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the analgesic effectiveness of ethanol extract of Kitolod leaves (Isotoma longiflora L.) in male white mice (Mus musculus). Kitolod leaves are traditionally used as herbal remedies for pain, yet scientific evidence regarding their analgesic potential remains limited. This true experimental research employed a pre- and post-test with control group design, involving five groups: negative control (Na-CMC 1%), positive control (diclofenac sodium 50 mg), and three treatment groups administered Kitolod leaf extract at doses of 56 mg/kgBW, 112 mg/kgBW, and 224 mg/kgBW. Extract preparation was carried out using maceration with 96% ethanol, followed by phytochemical screening which confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and steroids. Analgesic activity was assessed using the tail flick method by measuring latency response to thermal stimuli at intervals of 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes post-treatment. The results showed that Kitolod leaf extract increased pain response latency, with the 112 mg/kgBW and 224 mg/kgBW doses demonstrating the strongest analgesic effects comparable to diclofenac sodium. Statistical analysis using independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) between treatment and control groups. These findings suggest that Kitolod leaf ethanol extract possesses promising analgesic properties and may serve as a potential natural alternative for pain management.
