Abstract

Indonesia has abundant natural wealth. One of the endemic plants of Papua which is often used in traditional medicine is yellow rope (A. cocculus). This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of methanol extract of yellow rope bark (A. cocculus) against P. acnes, S. aureus, and E. coli bacteria using an experimental microbiological approach in the laboratory, and the experiment model may also serve as a contextual laboratory-based learning resource in microbiology education. The antibacterial activity test was carried out using the disc diffusion method which was made in 3 concentrations, namely 5%, 10% and 15%. The results of measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone showed that each concentration was able to inhibit the growth of P. acnes bacteria with an average diameter of 2,816 mm (Weak), 6,733 mm (Medium), 9,333 mm (Medium), and control (+) clindamycin 2 μg 14,483 mm (Strong). S. aureus bacteria with an average diameter of 3.133 mm (Weak), 6.35 mm (Medium), 8.235 mm (Medium) and control (+) clindamycin 2 μg 20.97 mm (Very strong). E. coli bacteria showed an average diameter of 3.875 mm (Weak), 6.175 mm (Medium), 8.566 mm (Medium) and control (+) ciprofloxacin 5 μg 20.783 mm (very strong). This research shows that the methanol extract of yellow stem bark (A. cocculus) has antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the analgesic effectiveness of ethanol extract of Kitolod leaves (Isotoma longiflora L.) in male white mice (Mus musculus). Kitolod leaves are traditionally used as herbal remedies for pain, yet scientific evidence regarding their analgesic potential remains limited. This true experimental research employed a pre- and post-test with control group design, involving five groups: negative control (Na-CMC 1%), positive control (diclofenac sodium 50 mg), and three treatment groups administered Kitolod leaf extract at doses of 56 mg/kgBW, 112 mg/kgBW, and 224 mg/kgBW. Extract preparation was carried out using maceration with 96% ethanol, followed by phytochemical screening which confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and steroids. Analgesic activity was assessed using the tail flick method by measuring latency response to thermal stimuli at intervals of 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes post-treatment. The results showed that Kitolod leaf extract increased pain response latency, with the 112 mg/kgBW and 224 mg/kgBW doses demonstrating the strongest analgesic effects comparable to diclofenac sodium. Statistical analysis using independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) between treatment and control groups. These findings suggest that Kitolod leaf ethanol extract possesses promising analgesic properties and may serve as a potential natural alternative for pain management.

Abstract

Ethnomedicine is the study of certain communities in using medicines. Information on the use of medicinal plants can be provided using an ethnomedicine approach. Ethnomedicine as a method that can be used to explore the use of medicinal plants can be the first step to developing new medicines. Knowledge about how to process traditional ingredients used in certain community groups can be used as a reference in developing medicinal raw materials. Research on the use of medicinal plants in various communities (cross-cultural studies) can be used to find drugs and bioactive compounds. Ethnomedicine is an important stage in screening, selecting and developing new medicines derived from plants. Ethnic communities in an area have unique culture and local wisdom due to regional differences. This has an impact on knowledge about traditional medicine and medicine. Various tribes or ethnic groups in Indonesia have their own experiences in dealing with health problems. Ethnomedicine is part of a community's traditional medicine, often empirically proven, scientifically validated, for the discovery or development of new medicinal compounds.
