Abstract

In Balinese people, there are allots of folklores that scattered in the society which they call Satua Bali. Narrowly, satua Bali is a story that spread out from generation to generation and words of mouth, it is not known who the creator as well. Meanwhile, in the broad sense, satua Bali is derived from the work of authors, whether it is use Balinese language or ancient Javanese language. There are many satua Bali still survive, one of them is satua Pan Balang Tamak. Pan Balang Tamak is the figure who has very clever character and he does not want to be lost by the villager. Because of his cleverness, the villagers and even the king hate him. And, the attempted to deceive him, but all of their efforts were in vain. Many moral values can be learnt from the story of Pan Balang Tamak, that we are as individual as members of the public should not attempt to cheat, or deceive others. And, the brightness brain that we owned should be used to help others. Data was taken from the story which its existence in society, namely satua Pan Balang Tamak. Then, the data is collected by means of written discourse according to topic above. The method suitable for the study which has written language is a method refers to advanced technique such as technical note (Sudaryanto, 1985:26 1986: 33). Then, the result of data analysis technique use distributional method which works within the scope of language itself without linking it with outside matters.

Abstract

AbstractCommonly, an amazing and attractive advertisement intends to hypnotize their target consumer in seeing, reading, or even hearing the ads continually. Besides, the power of persuading and motivating in messages from the way of informing product benefit could also give impact to buyer in deciding to buy the product. This research discusses the contexts of advertising found on packages of two Nestle products, especially Nestle Dancow Actigo and Nestle Dancow Enrich. These products were analyzed based on pictures or symbols and text found on packages. It is aimed at finding out the context of discourse advertising on those packages. Data were collected from analysis of text, including pictures or symbols and additional questionnaires distributed to 50 respondents located at Denpasar and Gianyar. Urban society were used to evaluate concerning on their understanding of English even though Indonesian language mostly applied on packages of products. Method used in analyzing data is descriptive qualitative and quantitative with simple statistics and explanation. It showed that connotation and denotation meanings highlighted lexical items and its cultural adaptation using process of copy adaptation to fit the culture of their targeted consumers. Means found 6 words or phrases of English from 10 of them on packages understood by 50 respondents as of: 35 for Full Cream as highest score and 16 respondents for FortiGro as the lowest score. In addition, brand name, symbol and images showed producer seemed to have close relationship with consumer and able to attract target   consumer attention as majority of findings. It can be concluded that ads on packages of Nestle Dancow had succeeded to be understood by the society through the messages implied.

Abstract

Abstract Nowadays, plot within characters with mental health issues still a sensitive issue to be discussed by most people. Some parents often avert their children from the exposure of the topics in the purpose to protect them suffering the same illness. It is important to discuss on this topic since intend to show the reality of individuals’ feeling as mentioned in the plot of this study. The novel of All the Bright Places managed to succeed in delivering the message through interesting plot development where two main characters get together and share their perspectives to carry out the story. Hence, this study aims to investigate how Niven as a story writer structured her story with the plot. The results of this study showed a progressive kind of plot where plot elements are chronologically arranged within the mental health issues. These were found from the language in the plot including their point of views and symbols used as the elements of ction shown in the exposition, complication, crisis, climax, falling action, and resolution. It seemed that there were connection between characters supported with the language use and events covered inside the plot. These re ected to the whole part of patterns inside the story that give personal touchs to their readers from the events. Keywords: ction, literature, mental illness, novel, plot Abstrak Dewasa ini, pembahasan alur cerita dengan karakter-karakter yang memiliki masalah kejiwaan masih dianggap sensitif bagi kebanyakan orang. Beberapa orang tua masih sering menghindarkan anaknya dari paparan topik tersebut demi alasan keamanan supaya tidak terkena penyakit yang sama. Pengangkatan topik ini penting sebab berusaha mengungkapkan perasaan seseorang secara nyata dalam alur cerita seperti kajian ini. Pada novel “All the Bright Places” berhasil menyajikan pembahasan yang memberikan alur cerita menarik melalui sudut pandang kedua tokoh utama yang secara berdampingan dibagikan dalam memandu perkembangan alur cerita. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana cara Niven sebagai penulisnya mengemas alur ceritanya. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa Niven mengadaptasi tipe alur cerita progresif karena urutan alur yang tersusun secara kronologis dengan permasalahan kejiwaan di dalamnya. Temuan berupa penggunaan bahasa termasuk sudut pandang dan simbol-simbol sebagai unsur-unsur dalam alur cerita yaitu ekposisi, komplikasi, krisis, klimak cerita, penurunan klimak dari alur cerita, dan resolusi. Keterkaitan antara karakter-karakter, bahasa dan kejadian-kejadian yang ada turut mendukung alur cerita itu. Hal ini mere eksikan bahwa pola-pola kejadian yang ada mengalir di dalam cerita sehingga dapat memberikan sentuhan mendalam kepada pembacanya. Abstract

The study discusses and analyzes the characterization of a secondary character in the movie Black Panther, Erik Killmonger whose status as a villain described as a Machiavellian; a person known to be gruesome and unreliable to acquire everything he desires by any means necessary. The study functions as a source of knowledge for everyone who wishes to comprehend the deeper issue of a secondary character existence in a movie who does not get enough recognition, unlike the main character. This study used collecting and observing methods to acquire the data, Black Panther movie along with the movie script. A Qualitative research method is used to answer the problems of the study. It examined Killmonger’s characterization by using three theories; tridimensional aspects, Black Nationalism, and Machiavellianism. Discussion of Black History counts as a great necessity to give a clearer sense of the character’s background who described as an African-American male. Lastly, a descriptive method to analyze the problems and present the analysis is chosen to complete this study. The results of this study found innovative discussions on a Machiavellian character on the parameters of self-determination, nationalism, and racial prejudice. Killmonger’s Machiavellian character is categorized to have “cold” emotionality, lack of empathy, and manipulative. The study results also delivered fundamental truths about the current political and cultural situation in the United States, in which people still seek persistence in their everyday lives based on racial boundaries reflected by Killmonger’s mission as an African-American.

Abstract

This study entitled “The Structure of Jay Gatsby’s Personality in The Great Gatsby Novel” is aimed to describe Jay Gatsby’s structure of personality and his behavioral representations. The data were taken from the novelThe Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Qualitative method was applied to analyze Jay Gatsby’s structure of personality and his behavioral representations. The theories used to analyzed are the theory of literature proposed by Kenney, theory of psychoanalysis and theory of anxiety proposed by Freud. The theory of literature showed that The Great Gatsby used mixed plot and in order to reveal the character of Jay Gatsby, mixing method was used.The psychoanalysis theory showed three structures of personality of human minds: the id, the ego, and the superego. The behavioral representations of the structure of personality showed in anxiety and defense mechanism of the ego: repression, fixation, and regression. The result of analysis showed that the desire of human beings must not be negative and must be realistic otherwise it will effect his/her behavior and how he/sheis treated in society.

Abstract

The title of this study is Women’s Language in the Movie “Bring It On”. This study aims at identifying and analyzing type of women’s linguistic features and functionsapplied by women characters in the movie. This movie entitled Bring It Ondirected by Peyton Reed and written by Jessica Bendinger was chosen as the data source of this study. The data of this study was obtained by watching and listening to the movie to find the women’s linguistic features used by the women characters in the movie. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively in order to give clear description. There were nine features found in the conversation of women characters of the movie, such as: lexical hedges or filler (e.g. such as well, you know, I think, I mean), tag question, rising intonation on declarative, “empty” adjective, intensifier (e.g. just, so), hypercorrect grammar, “superpolite” forms (e.g. thank you), precise color, and avoidance of strong swear word. In addition, the function found in this study as of: lexical hedges that showed women uncertain about what they are saying or cannot vouch of the accuracy of their statement; using tag question to make small talk or trying to elicit conversation from the addressee because the speaker needs confirmation from the addressee; using rising intonation is to seek for confirmation; using empty adjective is to show the speaker’s approbation or admiration for something; using precise color term is related to women’s specific interest and to show that they are good in their field; using intensifier is to emphasize and strengthen the statement; using hypercorrect grammar is to show politeness to the addressee; using super polite form is to show their gratitude to the addressee; using avoiding strong swear word is to show how strongly women show their feeling about something.

Abstract

This study is aimed to identify how the Balinese students pronounce English consonants and to analyse the factors that influenced the Balinese student’s pronunciation in pronouncing English consonants. This study was conducted as field research and the data was collected from the Balinese student’s pronunciation by recording their voices in pronouncing the target phonemes. Besides, interviewing was also done to know the factors that influence them in pronouncing the target phonemes. Data of this research was descriptively analysed by using qualitative methods and analysed by the theory proposed by Roach, Brown, and Harmer. The consonants chosen were the consonants that mostly do not occur in their native language structure such as /f/, /?/, /?/, /?/, /v/, /ð/, /z/, /?/, /?/ and the chosen English consonants that are pronounced differently from what it has written is /k/. The Balinese students were not familiar with those phonemes caused they found difficulties when they pronounced those phonemes sound. Foreign language pronunciation of the students was influenced by some factors: Age, First language interference, Learner differences (student’s aptitude and intelligence), and Motivation (teacher and other students).

Abstract

Good communication is the basis of a good relationship. In achieving the appropriate goals, responses, and reciprocities of speech, people tend to apply the value of decency. The pessimistic strategy of negative politeness is analyzed in this study. The data used in this study is taken from the Thor: Ragnarok Movie. This study analyzes the type of pessimistic strategy of negative politeness, such as negative, subjunctive, and remote-possibility makers. Besides, this study analyzed the factors that influence the character who used the pessimistic strategy. Factors are relative force, social distance, and level of imposition. The analysis of types and factors is based on the courtesy theory of Brown and Levinson's book "Politeness Some Universals in Language Usage" (1987). The result showed that all of the three types of pessimistic strategy in negative politeness is found in Thor: Ragnarok Movie. The negative was found in the use of tag questions. The subjunctive could be found in the use of the would, should, and the use of the IF clause. The remote-possibility makers was found in the use of word hope, supposed, though, and perhaps. The most type pessimistic strategy found in this data is the use of the subjunctive and the most factor which influences the characters is the size of imposition.

Abstract

Literature is one of the written works that express aspect of human life. This study is using a novel entitled The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. It is analyzing the main character in terms of physiological, psychological, and sociological dimension aspects. Dramatic and character on the other character method were used in analyzing the study based on character dialogue, action, opinion, and feeling. These were explained descriptively in order to have a clear understanding of the aspects implied in the story. The result of findings were three dimension aspects, as of; physiological, that influenced the main character are the age and physical appearance. The psychological, about the situation that she was ran away from her father when she still human. The sociological background and human relationship are influenced in sociological aspect. It can be concluded that the whole three dimension aspects of the main character showed in physiological, Bree was fifteen years old girl almost sixteen years old when she became a vampire,but she did not remember how old she was when she was a human. Her body will sparkling like a crystal when exposed to sunlight and also have a bright and red eyes. In psychological, she is an introvert vampire with few friends and does not really like to make trouble andspare time with other vampire. In sociological, before became a vampire, Bree was a girl who lived with her father. But, after her mother died, her relationship with her father not good, because her father was rude person.
