Abstract

Vocabulary has an important role in language learning at the college level, but in teaching practice, various obstacles are experienced by lecturers in implementing effective vocabulary learning. This study took place in Batam, Indonesia, and aims to investigate the English lecturers’ beliefs and practices in vocabulary learning; the phenomena of how they negotiate their teaching practices and what determines their choice of teaching methods when it comes to vocabulary learning. Five English lecturers from different universities were interviewed. The results of the interview were transcribed and analyzed based on the themes that appeared from data. The results showed that a requirement for practicality in class, curriculum, student atmosphere, and lecturers’ confidence in applying the right methods have effects on vocabulary learning. Lecturers have combined vocabulary learning with reading, writing, listening, and speaking in class. The main reference of a coursebook as the main guidance of the vocabulary learning varied between one class and another. All lecturers stated that they should find their own way to adopt external sources such as songs, vocabulary learning programs, and games to combine with their coursebook to beneficially meet the students’ preference. The new technology of teaching and learning is now part of classroom activities. Henceforth, this study concludes that the lecturers’ beliefs in the vocabulary learning approach are important. In practice, the lecturers need to combine them with various methods as the class situation do not always count on academic interests.

This research was conducted to explore the link of Indonesian students Vocabulary Level Test (VLT) performance and their reading textbook on reading subject. Through this pilot research, it can describe the implications profile in English teaching process especially in reading. Furthermore it can give more information in how to measure the reading textbook reference for reading subject or other similar subject that involve reading activities. There were 30 undergraduate students in Universitas Putera Batam that participated in the VLT. Their English textbook (Mosaic 1) was profiled to measure the lexical vocabulary level. The results indicated that only 1% of the participants had mastered the 2000-word level which means the vocabulary textbook-level is still far from students vocabulary knowledge. From the level of comparison theoretically they would have difficulties to comprehend the reading textbook, and some additional activities would be recommended, before, during and after the reading subject.

Abstract

Foreign language vocabulary learning can be pursued if the students have motivation and interest in which psychological factors play an important role in enacting learning strategies toward increased skills. This study aims to examine the integrated process model of the BasicPsychological Needs (BPN) variable as a behavioural phenomena in relation to autonomous and controlled motivation individually or collectively toward Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLSs) and Vocabulary Skills (VSs). A total of 186 students of one university participated in this research. The Basic Psychological Needs of Second Language Scale (BPNSLS) was employed to assess the BPN, meanwhile the Self-Determination Theory of Second Language Scale (SDTSLS) was to assess the autonomous and controlled motivation. There are three questionnaires (BPNSLS, SDTSLS, VLSs) were adopted and adapted of the previous study. The fourth research instrument was Vocabulary Level Test (VLT) version b to assess vocabulary skills. A partial least square was used to contest the research model. The structural model of the relationship between the variables of basic psychological needs, self-determination theory, vocabulary learning strategies, and vocabulary mastery, revealed that vocabulary learning strategies play a crucial role in looking at the influence of motivational orientation on vocabulary skills described in the proposed model. This study suggests that further research can explore more on how motivation relates to learning strategies in general and comparing between autonomous versus controlled motivation.

Abstract

Abstract

This inquiry endeavors to scrutinize contemporary breakthroughs in the realm of deep learning and their pragmatic utilizations within the educational sphere. To navigate prevailing  impediments, the investigation is executed via a bibliographic examination. The deductions unveil that in recent epochs, artificial intelligence (AI) has undergone an expeditious proliferation. Endeavors formerly deemed exceedingly intricate and formidable for human cognition to unravel are now deftly managed with AI’s intervention. This extraordinary innovation has garnered substantial acclaim owing to its capacity to emulate the cognitive assimilation of the human intellect through neural architectures. Comprehensively, AI is presently categorized into two principal subdivisions: Deep Learning and Machine Learning. Both of these technological paradigms have been instrumental in engendering transformative shifts across multifarious sectors, with particular emphasis on pedagogy. AI-driven mechanisms are increasingly assimilated into scholastic establishments to bolster operational efficacy, curtail expenditures, and cultivate fiscal lucidity by furnishing a perspicuous delineation of monetary inflows and outflows. Furthermore, AI empowers institutions to address exigencies with heightened alacrity and precision, thereby augmenting the overarching caliber of didactic and administrative undertakings. Owing to its extensive promise, AI remains an indispensable domain of inquiry and implementation, with deep learning spearheading its relentless progression.
