Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology advancements have given us language learning tools like DeepL, renowned for its translation accuracy and fluency. Students often use DeepL to understand scientific published articles for the purpose of composing thesis paper in the final year of their study. However, research on students' perceptions of the use of DeepL, especially in the translation of scientific articles, is still limited. This study aims to explore the perceptions of tertiary EFL students towards DeepL utilization, particularly in helping them to understand scientific articles in English. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with final-year students who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted using Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis method. The results showed that students have positive perceptions of DeepL because of its ability to translate complex academic terms, provide accurate and contextual translations, and accelerate understanding of academic literature. In addition, students consider DeepL is easy to use, accessible on various devices, and rarely experience technical problems. Most students plan to continue using DeepL in their academic studies and recommend it to their peers. This finding confirms that DeepL has an important role as a translation tool in supporting students' understanding of English scientific articles in thesis writing.

Abstract

The Kampus Mengajar Program is part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy which provides opportunities for prospective teacher students to be directly involved in improving the quality of education in elementary schools. This study aims to explore how pre-service teachers describe their experiences in overcoming challenges in improving students' literacy while participating in the Kampus Mengajar 7 program. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving five students who have participated in the program. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and documentation. The results showed that students faced various challenges at school, such as low student interest in reading, limited learning media, and a shortage of English teachers. To address these challenges, students designed a needs-based literacy program that is fun and relevant, such as routine reading before lessons, reading corners, and the use of digital media such as Canva, Wordwall, and YouTube. Individual and group strategies were also implemented to make students more active and enthusiastic. Besides having an impact on improving students' literacy, involvement in this program also contributes to the development of students' pedagogical, social and technological competencies as prospective teachers. However, the sustainability of the program still depends on school support and teacher involvement. These findings show that the Kampus Mengajar not only has a positive impact on students, but also serves as a real learning platform for students in preparing themselves as professional educators in the future.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impact of ChatGPT use on students’ learning productivity and provide recommendations for its effective utilization. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, documentation, and semi-structured interviews with 12 purposively selected active users. The data analysis employed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, emphasizing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that ChatGPT contributed significantly to enhancing efficiency in learning processes, improving conceptual understanding, and stimulating creativity among students. However, the study also uncovered several drawbacks, such as a decline in critical thinking skills, reduced motivation for independent literacy practices, and an increased tendency toward technological dependence. Within the specific context of Islamic Religious Education, the research further identified that some ChatGPT-generated responses were less accurate or misaligned with authoritative references, necessitating additional validation by educators and learners. The implications of this research highlight that ChatGPT can serve as a valuable supportive learning tool if applied proportionally. To achieve holistic and high-quality learning, students and teachers are advised to use ChatGPT with careful attention to information validation, cultivation of critical thinking, and strategies that minimize overreliance on technological assistance.
