Abstract

This study aims to analyze land use patterns and map land use zoning in Gorontalo City based on a Geographic Information System (GIS). The method used was spatial analysis with a quantitative descriptive approach through the processing of spatial data in the form of satellite imagery, administrative maps, and land use data. The research stages included digitization, classification, image interpretation, and overlay techniques using GIS software to identify the distribution and patterns of land use in each district. The results showed that residential areas dominate the city center, such as South Kota, Central Kota, and Sipatana districts, due to the high concentration of economic, governmental, educational, and commercial activities. Meanwhile, forests, plantations, rice fields, and shrubland are more widely distributed in the suburban areas, such as Hulonthalangi, Dumbo Raya, and North Kota districts. The conversion of natural and agricultural land into built-up areas indicates rapid urban development. The application of GIS in this study was able to provide accurate spatial information regarding land use zoning, which can support spatial planning, development control, and environmental sustainability efforts in Gorontalo City.

Abstract

Mangrove forests provide essential ecological, economic, and social benefits, including coastal protection, habitat provision, and support for local livelihoods. However, mangrove ecosystems in Ponelo Kepulauan District, North Gorontalo Regency, have experienced significant degradation due to land conversion, illegal logging, coastal abrasion, climate change, and inadequate management. This study aimed to formulate an appropriate mangrove forest rehabilitation strategy based on internal and external factors affecting rehabilitation efforts. A descriptive quantitative approach supported by qualitative data was employed through field observations, interviews with coastal communities and village government officials, and SWOT analysis using the Internal Factor Analysis Summary (IFAS) and External Factor Analysis Summary (EFAS) matrices. The results indicate that the rehabilitation strategy is positioned in Quadrant I (Strengths–Opportunities), with an IFAS score of 0.95 and an EFAS score of 1.15, indicating strong internal conditions supported by favorable external opportunities. The recommended strategy emphasizes optimizing the ecological and economic potential of mangroves, strengthening collaboration among local communities, government agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations, promoting community-based ecotourism, enhancing environmental education, and improving post-planting management and institutional capacity. These integrated strategies are expected to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of mangrove rehabilitation while supporting environmental conservation and improving the welfare of coastal communities in Ponelo Kepulauan District.

Abstract

Scientific publication is an essential research output that serves as a medium for disseminating research findings while strengthening academic culture in higher education. However, many students still have limited understanding of the publication process, particularly in preparing journal articles, selecting appropriate journals, understanding publication ethics, and submitting manuscripts through the Open Journal System (OJS). This community engagement program aimed to strengthen the understanding of scientific publication among students of the Geography Study Program, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, as the final output of their research. The program was conducted through lectures, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and the sharing of publication experiences. Evaluation was carried out through observation of participants' engagement during the activity and feedback collected at the end of the session. The results showed that participants developed a better understanding of scientific article structure, publication ethics, journal selection strategies, reference management applications, and manuscript submission through OJS. This activity is expected to improve students' readiness to publish their research findings and foster a stronger culture of scientific publication within the university.

Abstract

Abstract. Melo RH, Kusmana C, Eriyatno, Nurrochmat DR. 2020. Short Communication: Mangrove forest management based on multi-dimension scalling (RAP-Mforest) in Kwandang Sub-district, North Gorontalo District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1352-1357. Management of mangrove forests is an important aspect in the effort to conserve the environment in coastal areas. Its management requires planning to ensure the sustainability of its function and benefit. This study aimed to analyze the sustainability level of the mangrove forest management in Kwandang Sub-district, North Gorontalo District, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia and to determine the factors that affected that sustainability. Data were collected through field measurement and interviews, and then analyzed using Rapid Appraisal of Mangrove Forest (Rap-Mforest) approach and Monte Carlo analysis. The results showed that mangrove management was fairly sustainable on the ecological criteria (60.43%), but less sustainable on the economic criteria (47.79%) and social criteria (42.22%). The result of leverage analysis indicated that 6 out of 20 indicators were categorized as sensitive indicators affecting the sustainability of mangrove management. These sensitive indicators should be given priority in increasing the sustainability index in the future.
