Abstract

This study was conducted to analyse the economic efficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations and the socioeconomic factors that affect them. The study area was purposively selected because it is the sub-district with the largest area of smallholder oil palm plantations in Padang Lawas Regency, with the largest area of smallholder oil palm plantations on the West Coast of North Sumatra Province. The study sample was determined using quota sampling, with 150 samples drawn from Aek Lancat Village and Pagaran Mompang Village, each with 75 samples. Data analysis methods used: Data Envelopment Analysis and Censored Tobit Regression Analysis for smallholder oil palm plantation management data for 2023. The results showed that the majority (85.33%) of smallholder oil palm plantations were not economically efficient, with an average economic efficiency value of 0.8789. Factors such as gender, farming experience, family size, type of seed used, distance from the farmer's residence to the input market, and experience in applying organic fertiliser significantly affected the economic efficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations. Meanwhile, socioeconomic factors such as age, education, the number of productive oil palm plants cultivated, access to credit, experience in participating in farmer organisations, and farmers' experience in using information and technology facilities related to farming management have no significant effect on the economic efficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations.

Abstract

The technical efficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations is a reflection of the farmers' ability to coordinate the use of inputs to obtain the desired output. This study aims to determine the value of technical efficiency and factors that influence the technical efficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations. The research area was determined purposively on the grounds that it is a sub-district area that has the largest area of smallholder oil palm plantations in Asahan Regency as the regency area that has the largest area of oil palm plantations in North Sumatra Province. The research sample was determined by quota sampling of 150 samples originating from two villages, namely Gonting Malaha Village and Padang Pulau Village, each with 75 samples. The data analysis method used Data Envelopment Analysis and Censored Tobit Regression Analysis for data on the management of smallholder oil palm plantations during 2023. From the results of the study, it was found that the majority (81.33%) of smallholder oil palm plantations were not technically efficient, with an average technical efficiency value of 0.9782. Factors that significantly influence technical efficiency are gender, age, farming experience, number of productive crops cultivated, distance from the farmer's residence to the input market, farmer experience applying organic fertilizer, experience participating in farmer organizations, and experience using information and technology facilities related to farm management. Meanwhile, factors such as education level, family size, type of seed used, and access to credit by farmers have no significant effect on technical efficiency.

Abstract

Abstract

Funding is one of the biggest problems facing small-scale broiler chicken farmers. Another problem is not knowing how to cultivate it properly and the difficulties in selling it. Partnerships are one way to overcome the challenges commonly faced by boiler chicken farmers. PT. Charoen Pokphand and Pesantren Darussalaam, who run a boiler chicken farming operation in Langkat, North Sumatra Province, use the partnership model. The purpose of this study is to calculate the financial feasibility of the program using the benefit cost ratio (BCR), net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), and payback period (PP). Additionally, to determine how changes in labor expenses and feed prices may affect farmers' revenue. With a purposive sampling method, this explanatory research uses a case study strategy. The results of the financial analysis found that Darusalam Islamic Boarding School boiler chicken farming business was feasible, as indicated by the net present value (NPV) of IDR 316,719,165, benefit cost ratio (BCR) of 1.74, internal rate of return (IRR) of 25%, and payback period (PP) of 1.93 years. The results of the sensitivity analysis have the most sensitive changes to the business in the form of increased feed costs. Partnership system broiler farmers like Darussalam Islamic Boarding School cannot regulate selling and feed prices, so the only way to keep the business viable is to maintain the resulting production. Therefore, Farmers must be able to master cage management and good production management in order to produce maximum broiler chicken production
