Abstract

This study examines the factors influencing students' seating preferences in the classroom and their impact on academic performance. Through qualitative methods using semi-structured interviews involving 20 students from the PGSD program at Nias University, it was found that seating preferences are influenced by various factors, such as interest in the subject matter, level of comfort, and fear of being called on by the instructor. The interview results indicate that the majority of students prefer to sit in the back row for reasons of comfort, to avoid direct interaction with the instructor, or due to established habits. However, some students feel more focused when seated in the back. This study emphasizes that seating position can affect students' interactions with instructors and peers, as well as their concentration during learning. Therefore, optimal seating arrangements can contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of classroom learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of persuasive sentences in tourism promotion brochures published by the North Nias Regency Tourism and Culture Office. The focus of this study is to identify the types of persuasive sentences based on Aristotle's rhetorical theory (ethos, pathos, logos, and call to action/CTA) as well as the linguistic elements used to influence potential tourists. The method used is a qualitative approach through document analysis of selected brochures and in-depth interviews with two key informants from the office. The results of the study show that the brochures use more logos sentences (70%) and pathos sentences (27.5%), while ethos sentences are not found at all, and CTA only appears at 2.5%. Of the nine linguistic elements according to Gorys Keraf's theory, only four were found: personification (7.5%), repetition (5%), imperative (2.5%), and hyperbole (2.5%), while other elements such as pronouns, adjectives, assonance, metaphors, and synecdoche did not appear. These findings indicate that the narrative structure in brochures is still intuitive and not yet fully based on a scientific approach. Therefore, this study recommends that the agency improve the balance of persuasive strategies, increase the use of CTAs, and enrich the variety of linguistic elements to make brochures more appealing to readers.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the implementation of the Role Play method in improving students’ speaking skills at the eighth grade of UPTD SMP Negeri 4 Gunungsitoli Selatan. The study was conducted through Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of two cycles, each involving planning, action, observation, and reflection. The speaking skill indicators evaluated included pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. In Cycle I, most students did not meet the Minimum Competency Criteria (KKM) of 75%. Only two students (7.5%) achieved the “good” category, eight students (30%) were in the “sufficient” category, while seventeen students (63%) remained in the “poor” category. These results indicated that students faced difficulties in speaking due to limited practice, lack of confidence, and challenges in pronunciation. The researcher addressed these issues by providing targeted pronunciation practice and encouraging students to prepare more thoroughly. Significant improvement was observed in Cycle II. The Role Play method enhanced student engagement and reduced anxiety, resulting in better speaking performance. Five students (19%) reached the “very good” category, twenty-one students (75%) were categorized as “good,” and only two students (7.5%) remained in the “sufficient” level. These findings demonstrate that the implementation of the Role Play method effectively improved students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Proverbs are one of the cultural heritages that contain noble values and traditional wisdom passed down from generation to generation. In the era of globalization, the younger generation, especially in Dahadanö Gawu-Gawu Village, Gunungsitoli City, tends to ignore proverbs spoken in traditional Nias wedding ceremonies, due to a lack of understanding of their meaning. This study aims to analyze the types of meanings contained in proverbs used in traditional Nias wedding ceremonies, to preserve and revitalize cultural values among the younger generation. This research uses a qualitative approach using semantic analysis. Data were collected through interviews with traditional leaders and relevant books, and then analyzed through the stages of data recognition, coding, reduction, interpretation, and representation. The researcher used Geoffrey Leech's semantic theory which classifies meaning into seven types: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative, and thematic. A total of 40 proverbs were identified and categorized. The results show that the most dominant type of meaning is conceptual meaning (31%), followed by connotative (29%), social (12%), reflective (11%), affective (9%), collocative (4%), and thematic (4%). The findings show that proverbs are not only rich in literal meaning, but also rich in cultural, emotional, and social values. This study concludes that semantic analysis is an effective method to reveal the layered meanings in proverbs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of student discipline in the English learning process and the strategies used by teachers in managing student discipline in the seventh grade at SMP Negeri 3 Sogae'adu. Student discipline issues such as lack of attention to lessons, tardiness, and lack of responsibility in completing assignments are the main focus of this study. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of 18 students and one English teacher. The results showed that most students had a good level of discipline, as seen from their punctuality, compliance with class rules, and responsibility and active participation in learning activities. Teachers implement three types of strategies to foster and maintain discipline, namely preventive strategies (establishing rules and positive habits), supportive strategies (giving gentle reprimands, rewards, and empathy to students), and corrective strategies (dealing with violations with a reflective and educational approach). Consistent application of these strategies, accompanied by positive relationships between teachers and students, has been shown to create a comfortable and safe learning environment that supports effective English language learning. This study concludes that student discipline is greatly influenced by teachers' humanistic and communicative strategies in classroom management, which have a direct impact on student engagement and learning achievement.
