Abstract

Background: Traumatic ulcer is one of the most common oral wounds. Chitosan has mucoadhesive characteristic while Aloe vera containing lignin which is able to penetrate the skin. It is expected that the combined gel of chitosan and Aloe vera will function as wound healing accelerator in traumatic ulcer. Molecular weight is one of the characteristics of chitosan quality. Purpose: the aim of this experiment was to know the density of collagen fibers in wound healing of traumatic ulcer using the combined gel of chitosan with different molecular weight and Aloe vera. Materials and Methods: 30 Male Rattus Norvegicus were divided into 3 groups. Group I was control group (without chitosan and Aloe vera), group II was given low molecular weight chitosan and Aloe vera, group III was given high molecular weight chitosan and Aloe vera. The groups were given traumatic ulcer making with 4 mm diameter and 2 mm depth. Rats were sacrificed by decapitation on day 3 and 7 then they were examined histopatologically to see the density of collagen fibers. Result: Statistical analysis with Kruskall Wallis and Mann-Whitney U test showed that there were significant difference p<0,05 between high and low molecular weight chitosan with Aloe vera group on day 3 and 7. Conclusion: Chitosan with high molecular weight and Aloe vera were more effective in wound healing of traumatic ulcer because they increase the density of collagen fibers.

Abstract

Background: Molecular weight is one of the chitosan characteristic that affects the effectiveness of application for wound healing in dental extraction. Chitosan could improve wound healing process because of its anti inflammation component and accelerateproliferation phase. Angiogenesis is one of the main component in proliferation phase because it can preserve cells function to accelerate wound healing process. Purpose: the aim of this experiment is to account blood vessels in wound healing of dental extraction using chitosan with different molecular weight. Materials and Methods: Thirty six male Rattus Norvegicus were divided into 3 groups. Group I (without chitosan), group II was given low molecular weight chitosan, group III was given high molecular weight chitosan. Rats were sacrificed on day 7 and on day 14 post extraction then they were examined by hystometri to see the change in blood vessels number. Result: Data were statistically analyzed with One Way ANOVA and LSD with degree of significant p<0,05 showed significant difference between high molecular weight chitosan group and low molecular weight chitosan group after 7 and 14 days observation. Conclusion: High molecular weight chitosan was found more effective to increase blood vessels amount at 7th day and decrease blood vessels amount that 14 day in wound healing of dental extraction process.

Abstract

Background: Molecular weight is one of the chitosan characteristic that affects the effectiveness application for wound healing of dental extraction. Chitosan could improve wound healing process because of its anti inflammation property and improve proliferation phase. Lymphocyte cell is one of the main cells that act during inflammatory phase. Purpose: the aim of this experiment is to account lymphocyte cell in wound healing of dental extraction using chitosan with different molecular weight. Materials and Methods: 54 Male Rattus Norvegicus were divided into 3 groups. Group I is control group (without chitosan). Group IIwas given low molecular weight chitosan. Group III was given high molecular weight chitosan. Rats were sacrificed by decapitation on day 5 and day 7 post extraction then they were examined histopatologically to see the change in lymphocyte cell number. Result: Data were statistically analyzed with One Way ANOVA and LSD with degree of significant p< 0,05 showed significant difference between high molecular weight chitosan group and low molecular weight chitosan group after 5 and 7 days observation. Conclusion: High molecular weight chitosan was found more effective to decrease lymphocyte cell amounts more than low molecular weight chitosan in wound healing of dental extraction process.
