Abstract

Polyculture of spiny lobster and rabbitfish is a cultivation system that combine two different types of fishery commodities in one cultivation container. The advantages are increased land productivity, efficient use of resources and diversification of cultivated production. This research aims to establish the effect polyculture of spiny lobster and rabbitfish on the stocking density of rabbitfish which is different from Floating Net Cage (FNC) system. The research was conducted in the coastal water Dusun Ujung Betok Pemongkong Jerowaru East Lombok. The size of the FNC used is 2m3. The weight of spiny lobster used ranged from 95-98g and the rabbitfish is 12-15g. The research was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatments, A (30 spiny lobster/m3 without rabbitfish), B (30 spiny lobster/m3 and 5 rabbitfish) and C (30 spiny lobster/m3 and 10 rabbitfish). Based on the research result, it was found that the absolute weight gain of lobsters during 45 days of rearing was in the range of 10.7 g – 11.6 g. The absolute weight gain of rabbitfish was 14 g – 19.8 g. There is significance in the survival rate of spiny lobsters, where the best treatment is C 93.33%. The survival rate (SR) value for rabbitfish reaches 100%. The results of the study represented that polyculture of spiny lobsters and rabbitfish affected the productivity and survival rate of both species, but not their growth.

Abstract

Abstract

Feed supplements for aquaculture activities are materials that currently widely used. There are many feed supplements using herbal ingredients, because it is considered more safety for fish. It is based on prohibition of antibiotics usage, because it can create resistance in microorganisms and has a negative impact on environment. Turmeric is a spice that widely used as a feed supplement. Most turmeric is used for cooking ingredient, but it is also widely used in traditional medicine. Several active compounds in turmeric such as curcumin and turmerone have been studied. These active compound have been proven could increase antioxidant and prevent lipid peroxidation, so it can increase the fish growth. Apart from that, this active compound is also useful in inhibiting bacterial growth by damaging membrane and preventing the formation of biofilms.

Abstract

Research on the use of black cumin (Nigella sativa) as an immunostimulant in aquaculture has shown interesting potential. In this review, we explore the potential of black cumin as an immunostimulant in aquatic animals. Based on a recent literature review, we highlight the positive effects of black cumin extract in enhancing immune responses in aquatic organisms. The active compounds in black cumin, such as thymoquinone and α-hederin, are thought to have the ability to stimulate the immune system, increase cytokine production, and increase phagocytic activity. Implications of using black cumin in aquaculture include the potential to improve the health and productivity of aquatic animals. However, challenges such as dose optimization, effectiveness in various aquatic species, and environmental risk management need to be addressed. Suggestions for further research include more in-depth studies of the mechanism of action, clinical trials on various aquatic species, as well as environmental impact assessments. With a careful and coordinated approach, the use of black cumin as an immunostimulant has the potential to increase sustainability and productivity in aquaculture practices.

Abstract

Pearl oysters (Pinctada maxima) are an aquaculture commodity with high economic value. Large-scale production of pearl oyster seeds remains a challenge due to low growth and survival rates. Salinity is an environmental factor that greatly influences growth, feed filtration rate and survival of bivalves. This study aims to evaluate the effect of salinity levels on the growth, survival and filtration rate of pearl oyster spat. Pearl oyster spats measuring 2.14 ± 0.77 mm (dorso-ventral) were reared for 21 days at salinities of 26, 30, 34, and 38 ppt with a single feed of Chaetoceros amami with an initial density of 20,000 cells/ml. The results showed that a salinity of 34 ppt produced the highest growth and was significantly different (p < 0.05) compared to other salinities with an absolute growth value of 6.18 ± 0.25 mm, relative growth of 288.8 ± 11.5% and the daily specific growth rate is 6.68 ± 0.15% per day. The feed filtration rate value at a salinity of 34 ppt was 126.76 ml/hour/individual with a survival rate of 94.22% where these two parameters were also significantly different compared to other salinity treatments. There is a close relationship between growth, filtration rate and survival of spat with the salinity level of the rearing medium. This research shows that salinity of 34 ppt is the optimal condition to support growth, feed filtration rate, and survival of pearl oyster spat.

Abstract

Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is a valuable brackish and marine fish species with high aquaculture potential. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of different stocking densities on growth performance and feed efficiency. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used in a uniform floating net cage (FNC) system with four stocking densities: P1 (20 fish/m³), P2 (30 fish/m³), P3 (40 fish/m³), and P4 (50 fish/m³), each with three replications. Results showed that absolute length growth ranged from 1.17 to 2.33 cm, absolute weight growth from 2.36 to 4.43 g, specific growth rate from 0.94 to 1.93%/day, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) from 1.22 to 2.03. The best growth and FCR were observed in P1 (20 fish/m³), while higher densities resulted in reduced performance. The study concludes that lower stocking densities enhance growth and feed efficiency in barramundi aquaculture. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing stocking strategies to improve productivity and sustainability.
