Abstract

This study focused on analysing the functions and the process of derivational suffixes found in the novel The Little Prince written by Antonie De-Saint Exupery. This study used quantitative method to account the percentage of the functions of derivational suffixes using table and qualitative method to identify and to give clear explanation about the functions and the process of derivational suffixes using description that is related to the theories proposed by Lieber (2009) and McCarthy (2002) which is used to discuss the process of derivational suffixes. To describe the result of this research it used formal and informal method. The functions of derivational suffixes consists of three types, such as category-changing lexeme formation, meaning-changing lexeme formation, and both category meaning-changing lexeme formation.

Abstract

The study concerns with derivational suffixes in the novel “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. Descriptive qualitative method were used to identify the types and process of derivational suffixes found in the data source. This study found 213 data, consist of 23 data (11%) derivational suffixes Noun to Adjective, which were: -ish, -ous, -ful. 51 data (24%) derivational suffixes Verb to Noun, which were: -ance, -er, -ion. 16 data (8%) derivational suffixes Adjective to Noun, which was: -ness. 20 data (9%) derivational suffixes Verb to Adjective, which was: -able. 101 data (47%) derivational suffixes Adjective to Adverb, which was: -ly. The last one was 2 data (1%) derivational suffixes Noun to Verb, which was: -ish. This study concluded that the most accurrence data that was found in this analysis was derivational suffixes Adjective to Adverb.

Abstract

Code switching is a common phenomenon in language use. When people have the ability to speak more than one language, they will combine the language and often switch the language. This study aims to find out the types of code switching found in Naura Ayu utterances in TS Media Podcasts and analyze the code switching functions found in Naura Ayu utterances in TS Media Podcasts. The data were taken from TS Media YouTube Podcast with Naura Ayu. Naura Ayu is one of famous singers in Indonesia and in her podcast she usually switches the code. This study used only one video among two videos. The data were collected from one video. The title of the video is TS Media Podcast with Naura Ayu Part 1 with the duration 28.34 minutes. The method used in analysing the data was qualitative method by applying several techniques, such as; watching, listening, finding the utterances with code switching, and taking notes. All of code switching types proposed by Poplack (1980) found in this study, those are inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching and tag switching.This study also found four functions of code switching among six functions proposed by Appel and Muysken (1987).Those functions are referential function, metalinguistic function, expressive function and directive function. The type of code switching that was dominant found in Naura Ayu utterances was intra-sentential switching, besides the dominant function of code switching found was referential function. Keywords: code switching, types, function, and podcast Alih kode merupakan fenomena umum dalam penggunaan bahasa. Ketika orang memiliki kemampuan untuk berbicara lebih dari satu bahasa, mereka akan menggabungkan bahasa dan sering beralih bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis alih kode yang terdapat pada tuturan Naura Ayu dalam Podcast TS Media dan menganalisis fungsi alih kode yang terdapat pada tuturan Naura Ayu dalam Podcast TS Media. Data diambil dari TS Media YouTube Podcast bersama Naura Ayu. Naura Ayu adalah salah satu penyanyi terkenal di Indonesia dan dalam podcastnya dia biasanya mengganti kode. Penelitian ini hanya menggunakan satu video di antara dua video. Data dikumpulkan dari satu video. Judul videonya adalah TS Media Podcast dengan Naura Ayu Part 1 berdurasi 28.34 menit. Metode yang digunakan dalam menganalisis data adalah metode kualitatif dengan menerapkan beberapa teknik, seperti; mengamati, mendengarkan, menemukan ujaran dengan alih kode, dan mencatat. Semua jenis alih kode yang dikemukakan oleh Poplack (1980) ditemukan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu alih inter-sentential, alih intra-sentential, dan alih tag. Penelitian ini juga menemukan empat fungsi alih kode di antara enam fungsi yang dikemukakan oleh Appel dan Muysken (1987). Fungsi-fungsi tersebut adalah fungsi referensial, fungsi metalinguistik, fungsi ekspresif, dan fungsi direktif. Jenis alih kode yang dominan ditemukan pada tuturan Naura Ayu adalah alih kode intra-sentential, selain itu fungsi alih kode yang dominan ditemukan adalah fungsi referensial. Abstract

Acculturation in families with parents having different cultures is a fascinating phenomenon. It is a worth investigating issue to be seen from type of intercultural marriage the family chooses and how children adapt to their parents’ different backgrounds.  This study aims at analyzing types of intercultural marriage taking place in Denpasar, the capital city of Bali province, Indonesia and investigating how the children from these families face the acculturation process. Twenty children in Denpasar city, Bali experiencing intercultural marriage were involved in the research. They were observed and interviewed to identify how acculturation takes place in their family. The study reveals that in the sense of acculturation as a process of adjustment and adaptation, it occurs in four types of intercultural marriage, namely (1) submission/immersion (being submitted to one), (2) obliteration (adopting new language and culture), (3) compromise (maintenance with limitations), and (4) consensus (full maintenance). Each type of intercultural marriage is supportively adopted in the families that give the opportunity for the children to live harmoniously despite the different backgrounds and cultures their parents have.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the language style and examine the social factors that influence the use of language style by the character “Sophie” in The School for Good and Evil movie. This is qualitative research since the data are in the form of utterances spoken by Sophie. The data of this study were collected by observation method thorough. Data was collected by watching the movie and classifying the utterances according to the type of language style. The collected data were analysed by employing the theory by Joss (1967) regarding the type of language style and the theory from Holmes (2013) to examine the factors. This study shows that Sophie uses four types of language styles in the movie: casual style, formal style, consultative style, and intimate style. The casual style was the most predominant data (31%) because Sophie dominantly talked to her friends casually. Moreover, this study examines Sophie's choice of language style in the movie The School for Good and Evil is affected by four factors: the participants, setting, topic, and function.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to analyze the taboo words in the subtitle of Project X movie. According to Wardhaugh (2010:239), Taboo is the restriction or avoidance of action in any community that is thought to be harmful to its members, generating them worry, embarrassment, or shame. The use of taboo words can be found in our conversation on a daily basis and also in the entertainment, for instance in a movie. This study aims at (1) find out the taboo expression in the Project X movie, (2) categorizing and analyzing translation strategies used by the translator in translating taboo expressions found in the subtitle of the Project X movie, This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The data comes from the film Project X. The data comes from the movie's subtitles, which contain prohibited terms. This study uses Batistella's (2005) theory to define the different sorts of taboo words, as well as Baker's (1992) theory to examine the translation strategy. According to the findings, there are four categories of taboo expressions among the eighty data points examined. They are epithet (twenty five data), profanity (eight data) Vulgarity (thirty seven data), and obscenity (ten data). For the translation strategies are used translating taboo expressions, the results show that there are eight types of translation strategies. They are translation by more general word (nineteen data), translation by more neutral word/less expressive word (eight data), translation by cultural substitution (thirteen data), translation using loan word or loan word plus explanation (five data), translation by paraphrase using a related word (twelve data), translation paraphrase using unrelated word (two data), translation by omission (nineteen data), and translation by illustration (two data). Abstract

This study focuses on analysing the types and function of taboo words found in Lil Dicky’s Song on Album Professional Rapper. The data source was taken from Lil Dicky’s Song on Album Professional Rapper it was released on July 31, 2015. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this study to describe the use of taboo words in song lyrics. In this study, the descriptive qualitative method was used to describe the use of taboo words in song lyrics. The method was used to offer a clear analysis of the data based on the theory. This study employed the theory from Batistella (2005) which is proposed to analyse the type of taboo words found in Lil Dicky’s Song on Album Professional Rapper and the theory from Wardhaugh (2006) which is proposed to analyse the functions of taboo words found in Lil Dicky’s Song on Album Professional Rapper. Based on the analyses there are 295 data about the types and functions of taboo words found. There are four types of taboo words found those are epithet, profanity, vulgarity and obscenity. Obscenity becomes the most types found in the lyrics of the song which found 152 times. And Profanity becomes the least types found which is found 19. And four functions of taboo words are found in the song lyrics those are to show contempt, to draw attention to oneself, to be provocative, and to mock authority. The most function found is to show contempt which is found 107 times and to mock authority becomes the least functions with only found 3 times. Keywords: Taboo words, Types, Functions, Song lyrics

Abstract

Nowadays, the use of two or more languages social media is a common phenomenon. This study aims to find out the types of Code Mixing in The Leonardo’s Podcast with Satria Mahatir and to analyze the reason of the usage of code mixing on The Leonardo's Podcast with Satria Mahatir. The data source of this study is The Leonardo's podcast with Satria Mahatir. This research method includes descriptive qualitative by means of observation, watching, and writing the utterances with code mixing data. The theory used in analyzing the data is according to Muysken (2000). The results of the findings, found that the type of code mixing are insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. In the research carried out by the researcher, the number of code mixing found were 44 data which include insertion code mixing 40 data, alternation code mixing 3 data, and congruent lexicalization only 1 data. Insertion is used dominantly in the data source due to the lack of word equivalents and the influence of local prestige culture that can cause this to happen.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini direalisasikan melalui pendampingan dalam upaya pengembangan kompetensi guru untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran di sekolah dasar. Kegiatan ini diimplemantasikan di sekolah negeri di kawasan Denpasar Barat, SD No 11 Dauh Puri Denpasar, Bali. Ruang lingkup pengabdian ini adalah dalam bidang pendidikan dengan tujuan agar para guru SD 11 Dauh Puri meningkatkan kompetensi para guru dalam bidang kompetensi mengajar. Metode yang diterpakan adalah ceramah dan diskusi. Materi yang diberikan menyasar peningkatan kompetensi guru, terutama kompetensi kepribadian dan sosial yang direalisasikan melalui metode pelatihan dan penyuluhan serta pendampingan melalui konsultasi. Pelatihan dilakukan secara intensif dan interaktif dengan pemaparan materi dan praktik sebagai realisasi pelatihan dan penyuluhan, wawancara secara mendalam yang hasilnya dipetakan sebagai hasil pendampingan. Kompetensi kepribadian dan sosial berfokus pada kemampuan pendekatan yang dilakukan para guru kepada peserta didik. Dengan pemberian wawasan dan latihan mengenai professional development berupa komunikasi berbasis nilai, pengembangan kompetensi sosial melalui konsep value-based atmosphere, dan pendekatan mengajar Abad 21. Semua materi disampaikan dengan metode interaktif dengan evaluasi melalui wawancara mendalam untuk memetakan hasil yang diperoleh dalam penerapan materi pengabdian yang diajarkan. Hasil dalam pengabdian ini adalah (1) guru mampu mengidentifikasi kekuarangan dan kelebihan dalam komunikasi sosial kepada peserta didik, dan (2) guru mengetahui cara-cara pengembangan kepribadian berbasis value dan strategi mengajar di abad 21.

Abstract

Penguasaan metode pengajaran yang inovatif sangat penting bagi guru bahasa Inggris agar mampu menghadirkan pembelajaran yang efektif, menarik, dan relevan dengan perkembangan zaman. Salah satu tantangan utama yang dihadapi guru adalah keterbatasan dalam penggunaan media pembelajaran berbasis teknologi. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pelatihan ini dilaksanakan di English Hub dengan tujuan meningkatkan kompetensi pedagogis guru, khususnya dalam pemanfaatan media pembelajaran inovatif. Pelatihan ini mencakup materi mengenai pendekatan komunikatif, desain pembelajaran berbasis tugas (task-based learning), serta integrasi teknologi melalui penggunaan Smart TV sebagai media interaktif. Smart TV digunakan untuk menampilkan video pembelajaran, kuis daring, dan aplikasi edukatif berbasis internet. Metode pelatihan meliputi presentasi, diskusi, demonstrasi, dan praktik mengajar. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam pemahaman dan keterampilan guru dalam mengaplikasikan media pembelajaran inovatif di kelas. Selain itu, para peserta juga menunjukkan antusiasme tinggi terhadap penggunaan teknologi sebagai alat bantu ajar. Pelatihan ini memberikan dampak positif terhadap peningkatan kualitas pengajaran dan mendorong guru untuk terus berinovasi.
