Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of derivational affixes forming noun and the functions of derivational affixes forming noun in the novel entitled Firefly Lane written by Kristin Hannah. The methods used in this study are quantitative and qualitative methods. This study used observation method in collecting the data from all chapters in the novel Firefly Lane. Finally, this writing concludes that there were two functions of derivational affixes such are: class changing affixes and class maintaining affixes and each function has two types which are: prefixes and suffixes. The result of the study found there are 3 prefixes forming noun such are: re-, pre-,and pro-, and from suffixes there were found 22 suffixes forming noun, they are: -er, -hood, -ism, -ist, -ity, -ship, -ness, -th, -ize, -less, -ous, -y, -ful, -ive, -ing, -ance, -ence, -ant, -ion, -ment, - or, and –ure.

Abstract

This study concerns with the code switching found in Cinta Laura's video on her Instagram TV. Descriptive qualitative method is used for analyzing the data from ten videos. This study used the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) about types of code switching and the theory from Hoffman (1991) about the reasons of code switching. This study shows that there are three types of code switching found and six reasons of code switching found. The result of this study shows that intra-sentential switching is the most frequently used in types of code switching and particular topic is the most frequently used in the reasons of code switching. The phenomenon of code switching occurs in many media such as social media. By doing code switching, it is easier to build a sense of solidarity rather than using only one language. Therefore, code switching is an interesting topic to discuss in sociolinguistics research.

Abstract

This research concerns with borrowing words in Indonesian as found in the movie. This research aims at (1) to identify the types of borrowing word; and (2) to identify the adaptations of borrowing words used in Habibie & Ainun movie. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative for analyzing the data. This study used the theory of Haugen in (Grosjean 1982) that was the type and the adaptation of borrowing words. The results showed that there were 2 types of borrowing words found in the data source namely loanword and loan shift. For the adaptation process, there are 2 kinds of adaptation processes found here, namely phonological adaptation and morphological adaptation. The occurrence of pure loan words was dominant compared to the other types. Borrowing words are often found in online and print media such as television, newspapers, magazines, internet, etc. Borrowing words are analyzed in this study to provide knowledge about the existence of word borrowing in Indonesian. The Indonesian borrows many words in English, of course increasing the number of vocabularies in Indonesian.

Abstract

This study entitled “Derivational Affixes Forming Adjectives in Class Changing Affixes Found in Everything, Everything Novel. It is focused on derivational affixes in forming adjectives in class changing affixes. The aims of this study are to find out the types of derivational affixes forming adjectives and to analyze the kinds of class changing affixes forming adjectives found in Nicola Yoon’s Novel Entitled Everything, Everything. This study used theories from Katamba (1993) to classify the types of derivational affixes and McCarthy (2002) to analyze the kinds of class changing affixes forming adjectives. Descriptive and qualitative methods were used to analyze the data while observation methods were used to collect the data. The result found that there are 11 affixes attached with 143 words in forming adjectives with the occurrence as follows suffix –able (11 or 7,6%), -ing (1 or 0,6%), -ed (1 or 0,6%), -ful (45 or 31,6%),-ive (3 or 2,2%), -less (24 or 16,8%), -al (16 or 11,2%), -ic (6 or 4,2%), -ous (11 or 7,6%), -y (22 or 15,4%) and -ish (3 or 2,2%). Furthermore, there are 2 kinds of class changing affixes to form adjectives : adjectives derived from verbs with 19 frequency or 13,3% and adjectives derived from nouns with 124 frequency or 86,7%. Thus, the most frequently used affixes forming adjectives found in Everything, Everything Novel is suffix -ful with 45 or 31,6% and the mostly used class changing affixes to form adjectives is adjectives derived from nouns with 124 frequency or 86,7%.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out (1) the types of code mixing found in WhatsApp Group cargo department by the staffs at Ngurah Rai Airport and (2) to analyse the reason of code mixing found in the WhatsApp Group by the staff at Ngurah Rai Airport. The data were taken from chat of cargo department staff in WhatsApp Group at Ngurah Rai Airport. The method of collecting data was starting from March 1 to 30, 2021. The analysis was done by applying descriptive qualitative method requires documentation to identify the types of code-mixing, purposed theory by Hoffman (1991) about the types of code mixing and the purposed reason of code-mixing theory from Holmes (2013). The result of this study shows that there two of three types that found in the WhatsApp Group cargo department by the staff at Ngurah Rai Airport, there are: Intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing and involvement in a change of pronunciation. The type of Intra-Sentential code-mixing was more commonly found in chat conversations by the staffs on WhatsApp group, who stated that it was easier not to change the language in the cargo world, which primarily used English, to keep it easier for interact and avoid misunderstandings in the handover of their assignments or job desks. Because this research is based on chat messages in a WhatsApp Group, types of involvement in a change in pronunciation can be identified because that type is part of speech. The reason of code-mixing purposed theory by Holmes (2013) there are four reasons, namely: Topic, participant, solidarity and status. Because the relationship between employees provided information about the duties being carried out between divisions, the topic became one of the most common causes for identifying code mixing in chat chats in WhatsApp groups by cargo department staff.

Abstract

This study has two purposes, those are (1) to find out the types of code-switching used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah in “Daniel Tetangga Kamu” video YouTube channel and 2) to identify the functions of code-switching used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah’s utterances. A qualitative method is used for this study for analyzing the data collected from five videos. The method is applied to give a clear description of the data according to the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) as cited in Romaine (1989: 122) about the three types of code switching. The result of this analysis showed that there was three types of code switching found in this conversation are; Tag switching, intra-sentential switching and inter-sentential switching. Type of code-switching which is intra-sentential switching is the most often used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah utterances because they was more comfortable when using words, clauses, and phrases in one sentence to convey motivational messages. And the theory proposed by Appel and Muysken (1987) about the six functions of code switching. In this analysis showed that there was six function of code switching are; referential, directive, expressive, phatic, metalinguistic and poetic. Metalinguistic is the dominant function of code-switching in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah’s utterances. It occurs because Daniel Mananta and Raline shah wanted to impress the other participants with a show of linguistic skill.

Abstract

Slang occurs in any language of a region especially when people communicate in informal situations. This study focuses on identifying the types of slang words used by Neel + Jordan on their conversation through a podcast. The data are taken from their podcast on Youtube entitled Australian Culture. This study was done in order to make the viewers of the podcast easier to understand the content. The method conducted is descriptive qualitative. Observation and note-taking techniques are used to collect the data. There are five types of slang as follows: fresh & creative, clipping, flippant, acronym, and imitative based on the theory used from Allan & Burridge (2006). The writer formed the data using a table and conducted a description afterwards in order to make the analysis clear and the readers easy to understand. The result of the study was that there were five types of slang found in the Neel + Jordan Podcast.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the type of onomatopoeia used in the comic and analyse the meaning of the onomatopoeic word. The data were taken from Shazam comic written by Geoff Johns. Observation method was used in collecting the data with several steps applied such as reading, identifying and note taking the onomatopoeic words. This study applied descriptive qualitative method to analyse the data. The theory of types of onomatopoeia by Bredin (1996) was used to analyse the data. This study found fifty five (55) onomatopoeia. Those onomatopoeia words are divided into three types, such as 28 data of direct onomatopoeia, 14 data of associative onomatopoeia, 13 data of exemplary onomatopoeia. Direct onomatopoeia became dominant type used because the comic tells about superhero against enemies who want to destroy the world. The use of onomatopoeia in comic is very important since comic is sequential series of image with character and conversation inside.

Abstract

The study aimed to find out the types of English tenses found in “We All Are Perfectly Imperfect” speech. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in analyzing the data. For collecting the data, this study used observation and documentation method. This study applied Cowan’s theory (2008) to find out the types of English tenses. Those are three types of tenses: past, present, and future tenses in which each having four tense aspects with twelve tense aspects in total. The result of this research study shows that there are seven types of tense aspects come from those three main tenses present, past and future tenses that were found in this speech. In present tense there were simple present, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous tense with total 115 data (48,0%). In past tense there were simple past, and past continuous tense with the total 111 data (46,0%). Then in future tense there was type of simple future tense with 14 data (5,8%). The finding shows that the most dominant type of the tenses found in the speech “We All Are Perfectly Imperfect” is the type of present tense because the speaker in the speech mostly talking about something in the present moment and then the lower number of the data found is the type of future tense with percentage because the speaker was rarely talking about something that is prediction to happen in the future time.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of moral value found in Toy Story movie and the way the characters in the movie reflected the values. This research used Toy Story movie as the data source. This research used qualitative method and the data were analyzed descriptively. The data found in the study were classified by the types of moral value, based on the theory from Audi (2007). The purpose of this study was to find out the moral values reflected by every character in the toy story movie. Based on the analysis, it was found that the moral values deal with t social values in terms of behaviour, relation, interaction and also the social groups that reflected by the characters. In this research the moral values of the characters were reflected by the performance of the characters in the movie. The reflection of such value can be seen from their action and incidents including conversation among the characters in Toy Story movie. The result of the study showed the relation between the actions from the character of Toy Story movie and the conversation affect the character’s attitude that showed how the moral is created in the movie.
