Abstract

The research observed the semantic errors in lexis that occurred in the translation by TikTok machine translation. It became the main issue in translation studies because the accuracy of translation produced by machine translation was still questionable and debatable. The research aimed to identify the types of semantic error in lexis made by TikTok auto machine translation found in Tasya Farasya TikTok’s account and suggested a more appropriate translation. The research applied a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the error in translation produced by TikTok machine translation. The theory proposed by Sayogie (2014) was used to classify the data based on semantic aspects: grammatical meaning, contextual meaning, and referential meaning. The research results show that three types of errors are found, and the most frequent error found is an error in contextual meaning. TikTok machine translation is incapable of translating accurately because it does not know the context of the situation and translates it literally. Based on research findings, TikTok users cannot entirely rely on machine translation because it still has weaknesses in translating several terms. Thus, it is highly important that TikTok should evaluate and improve the quality of the machine translation.

Abstract

One intriguing aspect in linguistic studies is linguistic landscape, which encompasses the use of language in public spaces. This research aims to delineate the syntactic characteristics of information boards within self-cleaning temples (Malukat) situated in Gianyar, Bali. Furthermore, it investigates the function of the bilingual information boards' (Indonesian and English). The study employs a qualitative method to elucidate the syntactic scopes and semantic functions found in the informational boards. The analysis draws from landscape linguistics theory by Yendra and Artawa (2020) and incorporates micro-linguistics theories, including Noortyani's (2017) syntactic scope theory, Landry and Bourhis (1997) linguistic landscape theory, and Nida's (2000) translation equivalence theory. Findings reveal that temple information boards exhibit diverse syntactic scopes, predominantly in the form of sentences, as they convey detailed and comprehensible information to visitors. The semiotic function employed in public space signboards predominantly features informational and symbolic functions, contributing to the overall linguistic landscape of the temple environment. The research concludes the fact that the dynamic relationship between language, culture, and public spaces, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach to linguistic analysis in diverse environments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation techniques used in the translation of the movie “The Little Mermaid” (2023) from English to Indonesian by ChatGPT. This research method uses a direct observation approach by collecting data from the Scraps From The Loft website, translating the text of the movie “The Little Mermaid” (2023) from English to Indonesian by using ChatGPT, and analyzing it through translation theory and thematic categories to see the accuracy and effectiveness of the translation. The data were collected from the movie dialog excerpts and their translations provided by ChatGPT. The analysis used the translation techniques proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (2000), which include techniques such as borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. The findings of this study show a diverse application of translation techniques, with the use of literal translation (48%), modulation, and adaptation (15%). Literal translation is often used due to its simplicity and straightforwardness, while modulation is used to adapt the translation to the nuances of Indonesian culture and language. In addition, adaptation was also noted especially in translating cultural references and idiomatic expressions to maintain the original meaning and context. The study concludes that ChatGPT effectively utilizes various translation techniques to produce coherent and coherent translations.

Abstract

In the current digital era, disseminating information via social media is very easy and quick, but this can also increase the spread of wrong and inaccurate information to the public caused by translation errors in automatic translations on social media. The main objectives of this research are 1. Identify the types of translation errors found in Instagram Machine Translation in Translating the Caption of the "NYTimes" Instagram Account. 2. search for the most dominant types of lexical errors made by Instagram Machine Translation in Translating the Caption of "NYTimes" Instagram Account. The theory of error classification by Vilar et al. (2006) is applied to identify three main types of errors: unknown words, missing words, and incorrect words. The research method involves analyzing 100 translated news captions. There are three types of Lexical Errors found in Instagram machine translation when translating captions from the NYTimes Instagram account (1) Incorrect Word (4 instances, 50%) (2) Omitted or Missing Word (2 instances, 25% (3) Unknown Word (2 instances, 25%). The most common type of error identified in the translations is the use of incorrect words, accounting for half of all errors. This indicates that the machine translation often fails to select the appropriate words to convey the original meaning effectively.
