Abstract

The study entitled “Discovering the Meaning of Verbal and Visual Signs in L’Oreal Paris Video Advertisement: A Semiotic Study” which aimed to identify and analyze the verbal and visual signs as well as their meaning. Commercial advertisement plays an important role in promoting a new product. It could be the fastest and practical ways to sell the products or services to the costumers. The data was taken from L’Oreal Paris Total Repair 5 Shampoo video advertisement. The data was collected by observation method and analyzed in descriptive qualitative method. This research used three theories, they are of semiotic theory by Saussure (1983: 67), theory of meaning by Barthes (1977) and theory of color terms by Wierzbicka (1996). The findings showed that there are 5 verbal signs and 6 visual signs. As the result of this study, the verbal signs in this advertisement are appeared as the texts and sentences that written in big font texts, while the visual signs appeared as a picture and also supported by some colors which could attract the audience’s attention when they watch the advertisement video. Both of verbal and visual signs convey denotative and connotative meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of flouting maxims and to know what the most dominant types of flouting maxims performed by the characters in the Escape Room movie is. The researcher used the theory proposed by Grice in his book Logic in Conversation (1975) to analyze the types of flouting maxims in the Escape Room movie. The method that used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. Through the findings of the analysis, there were 24 data found. Those are: Flouting Maxim of Quantity 8 data (33%), Flouting Maxim of Quality and Flouting Maxim of Relevance rarely appeared with same frequently 6 data (25%) and Flouting Maxim of Manner 4 data (17%). From those forms, Flouting Maxim of Quantity has the highest occurrences used among others.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the types of figurative language in the novel entitled “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were analyzed based on the theory of Perrine (1977) about the twelve types of figurative language. The result of this analysis showed that there were 11 types of figurative languages found in this novel are; simile, personification, metaphor, synecdoche, allegory, paradox, metonymy, hyperbole, symbol, understatement, and irony. The type of figurative language that does not existed in this novel is the apostrophe. The types of figurative language personification and hyperbole are dominantly used in this novel, the author wants to make the reader not bored reading the novel and to make the readers know clearly the character of the existing characters in the novel. By using hyperbole readers can clarify the character or personality of the characters. The researcher proposed suggestions for the readers and literary enthusiasts are able to understand the study of figurative language in particular use of language as a tool for communication.

Abstract

People speaking language differently, it can be influenced by some social factors. This research is intended to find out the kinds of speech style and the variables that influencing the characters of “Birds of Prey” in speaking a language. There are two aims of this study, those are: 1) To find out the kinds of speech style are used in “Birds of Prey” movie, 2) To find out the dominant style used by the character in “Birds of Prey” movie. This research is using descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data with the theory proposed by Joos (1967) to divine the style of speech style. The result of the data was presented in both formal and informal method in finding presentation. The formal method was applied through table and the informal method was applied through word explanation to explain which type of an utterance belongs to. The result of this study showed there are 266 utterances that categorized into type of speech style, there are 4 types of speech style that grouped into: 17 formal styles, 56 consultative styles, 180 casual style and 13 intimate styles with casual style as the dominant style to be used by the character according to the movie’s rating and genre.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the types illocutionary acts found in a movie entitled Lean On Me. The problems of this study is What types of illocutionary acts are found in the movie entitled Lean On Me?. This study employed descriptive and qualitative method to provide a well-organized description regarding the problems being identified. The data of this study were obtained by observation method through five steps, namely watching the Lean On Me movie. Then, finding out the movie script of Lean On Me. Furthermore, the writer read the movie script and took note of the illocutionary acts spoken by the characters in the movie Lean On Me. Eventually, the writer classified the data collected. There were five types of illocutionary act encountered they are, assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The result of the research indicates that there are 9 data of illocutionary act found in Lean On Me movie covering 2 assertive, 3 directive, 2 commissive, 1 expressive, and 1 declarative.

Abstract

The study concerned with the code mixing found in Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40. The study aims to identify the types of code mixing found on Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40 as well as to describe the reason of code mixing found on Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40. The data were taken from Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40 on the video “Penjelasan Boy William Dua Kali Gagal Menikah” by applying the theory types of code mixing by Hoffman (1991) and reasons of code mixing by Hoffman (1991). The analysis was done by applying descriptive qualitative and quantitative method with observation method and noted taking technique to collect the data. This study shows that there are three types of code mixing found and three reasons of code mixing found. The study concludes that intra-sentential code mixing is the most frequently used in types of code mixing and talking about particular topic is the most frequently used in reasons of code mixing. By doing code mixing, it is easier to build a sense of solidarity between the host and the guest rather than using only one language and making the conversation more attractive.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the type of onomatopoeia used in the comic and analyse the meaning of the onomatopoeic word. The data were taken from Shazam comic written by Geoff Johns. Observation method was used in collecting the data with several steps applied such as reading, identifying and note taking the onomatopoeic words. This study applied descriptive qualitative method to analyse the data. The theory of types of onomatopoeia by Bredin (1996) was used to analyse the data. This study found fifty five (55) onomatopoeia. Those onomatopoeia words are divided into three types, such as 28 data of direct onomatopoeia, 14 data of associative onomatopoeia, 13 data of exemplary onomatopoeia. Direct onomatopoeia became dominant type used because the comic tells about superhero against enemies who want to destroy the world. The use of onomatopoeia in comic is very important since comic is sequential series of image with character and conversation inside.

Abstract

This study expects an investigation of morphological analysis, specifically derivational affixes forming adjectives derived from nouns on Taylor Swift’s twitter account. This study aims to find the types and analyse the morphological process of derivational affixes forming adjectives from nouns. The observation method was used in collecting the data and applied a note-taking technique to collect the data. Meanwhile, descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze and arrange the data qualitatively in order to give description clearly that related to the theory proposed by Katamba (1993) which discusses the types, also the theory from Fromkin et al (2013) to describe the morphological process based on the data that have been found. The result found there are 61 suffixes are used to change nouns become adjectives such as -y, -ful, -less, -ous, -ic, -ial, -al, and also the process of those affixes attach to root and base in forming adjective from noun.

Abstract

Onomatopoeia is naming objects or action based on the imitation of sounds associated with the object or actions. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely; (1) what types of onomatopoeic words are found in Justice League comic; (2) how does the context of situation help determine in Justice League Comic. This study used two theories to solve the problems, the first one is a theory proposed by Elizabeth (2013) to identify the types of onomatopoeia, and the second theory is from Halliday and Hasan (1989) used to analyze the context of the situation found in Justice League Comic. The data were collected through library research by reading the comic, identifying the onomatopoeic words, note-taking the onomatopoeic words, and this research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data descriptively and qualitatively to support the explanation by presenting the percentage of the data in a table to show which one is the most present data found in Justice League. The result of this study shows the types of onomatopoeic. From 29 data found in the Justice League Comic by Daniel Kibblesmith, the types of onomatopoeic mechanical is most commonly occurs with 13 data or 44,8%.

Abstract

The aim of translation is to transfer meaning from the source language to the target language. There are some methods that can be used in translating the text, one of them is faithful translation. Faithful translation method is a method that reproduces the exact contextual meaning of the original within the limits of the grammatical structures of the target language. This study focuses on analyzing faithful translation methods in the webtoon “I Love Yoo”. The objective of this study is to identify how the faithful translation method is applied in translating webtoon Ï Love Yoo”. The method applied in this study is qualitative descriptive method and the data were taken from the 1st to 10th episode of webtoon “I Love Yoo”. The data collected were analyzed by reading both versions of the webcomic, classified each sentence according to the translation methods and explained why the sentences are included into each translation method. To analyze the data, this study used the theory translation method proposed by Newmark (1988). It is found that 8 translation methods were applied but faithful translation method is most frequently used because the translator translates cultural terms and maintains the degree of grammatical and lexical faithfully to the intentions and the text-realisation of the source language writer.
