Abstract

This article tempts to verify the intricate dynamics of political alliances between Islamist groups and opposition parties in Indonesian elections, focusing on the 2018 West Java gubernatorial contest. The study employs exit poll data, investigating the relationship between religiosity, politico-religious narratives, and voting behaviour. While the mobilising power of Islamist groups appeals to political parties, creating a temporary alliance, these do not guarantee electoral triumph even in a conservative region. The politico-religious propaganda, in principle, consolidates Islamist-inclined voters. Despite high levels of religiosity among voters, the alliance's strategies fail to convey this religious mobilisation into broad electoral success. This underscores that the efficacy of such campaigns is contextually dependent and shaped by local socio-political conditions. However, the alliances offer potential political leverage, suggesting an enduring interplay between Islamist groups and political parties in the Indonesian electoral landscape. This exploration contributes to understanding the complexities of Islamist mobilisation within multi-level electoral contests.

Abstract

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated into a full-scale war following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Since then, both parties have engaged in several negotiation efforts aimed at resolving the conflict. However, from all those negotiations conducted none of them produce any agreement or any framework to resolve the conflict. This is seen by the researcher as a deadlocked situation within the negotiation. By using qualitative descriptive research with document analysis using Faure’s deadlock within negotiation framework, this research indicates that negotiation between Russia and Ukraine for resolving their conflict has reached a deadlocked situation. This research also found that several factors such as process, strategy, and contextual factor that are contributing to the deadlock situation within the negotiation. The findings suggest that these factors are creating a condition where during negotiations strategies adopted by both countries during negotiation and social, political, and legal pressure from within the countries makes them have very little maneuver during the negotiation, which creates a lack of any substantial agreement from the negotiation to resolve the conflict. This research contributes to the limited amount of discourse regarding the negotiation conditions that occurred between Russia and Ukraine for resolving their conflict, offering a new perspective by applying Faure’s indicators and factors such as Process, Strategy, and Contextual towards this issue.

Abstract

This research examines dual subordination of Indonesian female peacekeepers experiencing layered control from private institutions (family/husbands) and public institutions (state/military). Using critical feminist methodology through qualitative literature-based discourse analysis, this study applies feminist state theory and intersectionality analysis to reveal how the state instrumentalizes marriage institutions controlling female soldiers' professional autonomy. Findings indicate spousal permission requirements for peacekeeping assignments create dual ownership: women belong to husbands privately and the state publicly, making career advancement contingent on spousal approval rather than solely professional competence. Three operational mechanisms function: juridical domestication (codifying marital status as professional determinant), institutional collusion (domestic-military patriarchy collaboration), and internalized patriarchy (women accepting subordination systems). Comparative analysis reveals male soldiers face no equivalent requirements, perpetuating hegemonic masculinity. This study offers a new analytical framework conceptualizing dual ownership through three subordination mechanisms for understanding spousal-permission regulations in troop-contributing countries, advancing knowledge on domestic-institutional patriarchy intersections limiting women's peacekeeping participation.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing cybersecurity threats to Indonesia in the context of digital political-economic transformation, particularly following the implementation of nickel downstreaming policies and the strengthening of Indonesia's position in the global supply chain for critical minerals. This study aims to examine the structural linkages between national industrial policy, the escalation of Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) activity, the failure of public-private partnerships, stagnant cybersecurity regulations, and the limitations of Indonesia's cyber diplomacy in responding to transnational threats. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, relying on analysis of policy documents, cyber threat intelligence reports from 2023-2025, academic publications, and critical reviews of strategic events such as the ransomware attack on the Temporary National Data Center. The results indicate that the cyber threats facing Indonesia are systemic and rooted in global political-economic dynamics, where downstreaming policies and dependence on foreign technology create strategic incentives for foreign actors to conduct cyber espionage against strategic industrial sectors. This study also finds weak public-private collaboration due to a trust deficit, regulatory uncertainty, and the absence of incentives for incident reporting, which leads to the state's partial blindness in understanding the national threat landscape. Furthermore, the stagnation of the Cybersecurity and Resilience Bill and the limitations of regional cyber diplomacy highlight the gap between the rhetoric of digital sovereignty and the operational capacity of states. The implications of this research emphasize the urgency of strengthening integrated cybersecurity governance, regulatory reform that balances security and civil rights, and reorienting public-private partnerships as the foundation of cyber resilience.

Abstract

The article explores how Indonesian Muslim-based parties are structurally responding to, and using, post-2014 polarization in coalition politics through party institutionalization. Party institutionalization is understood as the mediator that shapes how polarization results in coalition formation, internal organizational dynamics, and electoral performance. A comparative case study of PKB, PKS, PAN, and PPP is covered here, based on interviews with party elites and activists for Islamic organizations, along with secondary sources, electoral reports, and media coverage. Results indicate patterned variation across parties. PKB and PKS, with more cohesive constituencies and stronger organizational capacity, have been able to better exploit the impact of polarization to reinforce partisan identity and enhance electoral prospects: PKB with an entrenched relationship with the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) milieu, while PKS uses polarization to consolidate after earlier internal frictions and expand its appeal among conservative electorates. In contrast, PAN’s more heterogeneous base creates tensions between the elite when a coalition’s maneuvers alienate an aspect of its supporters, whereas PPP’s weak organizational solidity propels it towards government alignment despite misfit with its base of voters. Overall, depending upon party institutionalization, polarization becomes either an electoral resource or an organizational burden.

Abstract

Rich in natural oil and gas resources, the South China Sea region is one of the busiest shipping zones in the world. This area has been claimed by China as its sovereign territory, prompting protests from Vietnam and the Philippines, among others. This makes this region extremely conflict-prone. The existence of this possible war has prompted the United States to compete with China for influence in this region, rather than remaining mute. The United States, Britain, and Australia created the AUKUS Security Treaty to increase their power. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the AUKUS security treaty for the South China Sea region. This study employs a qualitative methodology with descriptive techniques. Geopolitical dynamics have resulted in competition for supremacy in the South China Sea Region, according to the findings of this study. This has an effect on the region's security vulnerabilities. The formation of the AUKUS Pact was motivated by the need to reduce Chinese dominance in the South China Sea region. The inability of countries in the South China Sea region to sustain security stability in the region is a result of their contradictory traits. The author says that countries in the South China Sea region, particularly ASEAN members, have two options for sustaining security stability in the region: power balancing or diminishing China's dominance by backing the AUKUS Pact.

Abstract

This paper examines recent negotiations regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The conflict escalated into a full-scale war in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Using qualitative descriptive study and document analysis using Faure’s deadlock framework, this research identifies several indicators which show the negotiation between Russia and Ukraine for resolving their conflict has reached a deadlocked situation. This research also found that several factors such as cognitive, structural, and behavioural factor is causing the deadlock within the negotiations. The findings suggest that these factors are creating a condition where no substantive result and repeated arguments happened, which is indicators that the negotiation has reached a deadlocked condition. These findings also give implications towards the negotiation dynamics between two party, suggesting several strategies needed to overcome the deadlock within the negotiations. This research contributes to the limited amount of discourse regarding the negotiation conditions that occurred between Russia and Ukraine for resolving their conflict, offering a new perspective by applying Faure’s indicators and factors such as Cognitive, Structural, and Behaviour towards this issue.
