Abstract

This research explores the concept of character education for pre-school children based on the perspectives of Ki Hajar Dewantara and Maria Montessori. This research uses a qualitative approach with a comparative analysis method to highlight the similarities and differences of these two educational pioneers. Ki Hajar Dewantara emphasised the integration of local wisdom, independence, and moral values through the principles of ‘Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha’ (setting an example), ‘Ing Madya Mangun Karsa’ (building motivation), and ‘Tut Wuri Handayani’ (supporting from behind). In contrast, Maria Montessori focused on developing independence, discipline, and a sense of responsibility through structured learning environments, individualised learning plans, and the use of didactic materials. Despite their different cultural and historical contexts, both approaches share the common goal of fostering children's character as a foundation for lifelong development. The study concludes by emphasising the relevance of these two perspectives in designing a holistic character education model that addresses cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions for early childhood education.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Critical thinking skills are one of the essential 21st-century competencies that students must possess in order to face complex life and learning challenges. However, preliminary findings at SMA Negeri 7 Bandar Lampung indicate that students’ critical thinking abilities are still low due to the dominant use of LOTS (Lower Order Thinking Skills) questions and the lack of learning strategies that support the development of higher-order thinking. This study aims to improve students’ critical thinking skills through the implementation of the ASICC (Adapting, Searching, Interpreting, Creating, Communicating) learning strategy. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, integrated with a Lesson Study approach and conducted over three cycles. The research instruments included HOTS-based essay tests analyzed using a critical thinking rubric and calculated with the N-Gain formula. The results showed a gradual improvement in average scores and N-Gain categories from cycle I (0.32), cycle II (0.43), to cycle III (0.55), all within the moderate category but with a consistently increasing trend. Furthermore, observations and reflections revealed that students became more active, open-minded, capable of presenting logical arguments, and engaged actively in discussions and the development of learning products. The conclusion of this study is that the ASICC strategy is effective in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills and holds promising potential for broader implementation in contextual science learning at the secondary school level.

Abstract

This study aims to validate a contextualized Islamic Workplace Spirituality Scale (IWSS) specifically designed for Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. The instrument incorporates three core spiritual dimensions derived from Islamic teachings—taqorrub (devotion to Allah), muroqobah (spiritual self-awareness), and istiqomah (steadfastness)—which are operationalized into 10 measurable indicators. Using a cross-sectional survey, data were collected from 354 teachers across various Islamic education levels in Central Lampung Regency. The validity and reliability of the instrument were assessed using Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (EFA and CFA) with SmartPLS 3.0. The results confirmed that the instrument is both valid and reliable, making it suitable for measuring workplace spirituality within Islamic education settings. Key findings indicate that teachers exhibit a high level of workplace spirituality, with taqorrub emerging as the strongest dimension. This suggests that spiritual values play a central role in shaping teachers’ professional behavior and motivation. The study underscores the importance of integrating spiritual development into human resource strategies to enhance organizational effectiveness and efficiency. However, its scope is limited to a single district, highlighting the need for broader studies across multiple regions or countries to increase generalizability
