Abstract

This research departs from the dominant tendency in multicultural education studies, which is largely understood as part of modern policies and formal curriculum practices, resulting in models based on religious traditions often being overlooked. In the context of Islamic boarding schools in Madura, kiai not only play a role as teachers, but also as cultural figures, moral leaders, and authoritative sources in shaping attitudes towards diversity, although this dimension has not been widely studied in depth. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how kiai implement multicultural values in daily practice, as well as to uncover the philosophical, historical, and sociological foundations behind them. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological type to understand the kiai's experiences and views holistically. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with three kiai, and documentation studies. Then, they were analyzed using interactive thematic analysis with triangulation techniques to ensure data validity. The results show that multicultural education in Islamic boarding schools is not realized in the form of formal subjects, but is internalized through daily social practices mediated by the kiai's exemplary behavior. The implementation of values is carried out concretely through the application of equality in the dormitory system and discipline, the formation of solidarity through communal living across backgrounds, and the management of conflict in an educational manner through dialogue, advice, and educational sanctions. These practices have been proven to shape the students' tolerance, empathy, and ability to manage differences constructively, while strengthening social cohesion both within the Islamic boarding school environment and the surrounding community. This study concludes that Islamic boarding school-based multicultural education is practical, relational, and rooted in Islamic tradition, thus offering an alternative, contextual and sustainable educational model in building a moderate, inclusive, and harmonious society.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the process of holistic education based learning programs at SMAIT Al-Fityan School Gowa. The research focuses on learning development, learning integration, teacher strategies, student responses, learning interactions, and the use of methods. This study employs an evaluative research design using a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. Quantitative data collection and analysis were conducted first through the distribution of questionnaires to 30 students, followed by qualitative data collection through interviews with 3 teachers and 6 students to gain a more comprehensive understanding. The findings indicate that the evaluation of the holistic education-based learning program at SMAIT Al-Fityan School Gowa showed that 73.3% of the outcomes were at the “sufficiently achieved” or “fairly good” level. The learning process has developed students’ knowledge, attitudes, skills, and character; integrated various dimensions of holistic education namely intellectual, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual dimensions; employed varied learning strategies; created a pleasant classroom atmosphere; and strengthened student interactions. However, the implementation of the learning process still faces challenges, particularly in developing students’ skills, integrating physical aspects, and maintaining consistency in learning strategies. This study concludes that holistic education-based learning is important to implement in the classroom because it emphasizes the holistic and integrated development of students, encompassing intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and physical aspects. This approach views the learning process not merely as the transfer of knowledge, but as the process of forming the whole person, which takes place within specific social, cultural, and value systems.

Abstract

This comprehensive study examines the integration of moral education and active tolerance models in various communities, analyzing pedagogical approaches, target group segmentation, and their impacts on social cohesion and community harmony. Through a systematic review of theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence, this research synthesizes findings from various educational contexts to identify effective strategies for fostering tolerance and moral development in multicultural settings. The study reveals that an integrated approach that combines the principles of Akidah Akhlak with Active tolerance education shows significant positive results in reducing negative behavior, enhancing psychological well-being, and promoting social cohesion. The main findings indicate that experiential learning, collaborative pedagogical approaches, and comprehensive teacher training are crucial factors in successful implementation. This research contributes to the growing literature on moral education by providing a comparative framework that bridges religious and secular educational approaches, offering practical implications for educators, policymakers, and community leaders working in diverse social contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the revitalization of Islamic-based governance principles in Early Childhood Education (PAUD) institutions in West Java through a qualitative case study approach. The research aims to analyze the implementation of governance principles grounded in Islamic values, particularly amanah (trustworthiness), musyawarah (consultation), and ‘adl (justice), within institutional management practices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis involving school administrators, teachers, parents, and institutional stakeholders. The findings reveal that the implementation of governance principles in Islamic PAUD institutions is moderately effective but varies across governance dimensions. Financial transparency recorded the lowest implementation level at 42%, while communication with parents achieved the highest score at 83%. Transparency in learning programs reached 75%, whereas institutional policy transparency and organizational structure scored 67% and 58%, respectively. Stakeholder participation showed strong involvement from foundations (92%), parents (78%), and teachers (72%), but relatively weak participation from communities (25%) and local governments (33%). In terms of resource management efficiency, time management obtained the highest score (74%), followed by facilities management (71%), program effectiveness (68%), financial efficiency (63%), and human resource management (58%). The study also found that accountability mechanisms in teacher performance evaluation and program monitoring were relatively strong. The integration of Islamic ethical values into governance practices strengthens institutional sustainability, stakeholder trust, and educational quality. These findings contribute both theoretically and practically to the development of Islamic education management and provide recommendations for strengthening governance systems in PAUD institutions in Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesia's religious and cultural plurality demands social management strategies that are not only normative but also structured through public policy and discourse. The Special Region of Yogyakarta is often positioned as a representation of a tolerant region, but this image construction is rarely critically examined from the perspective of symbolic appropriation and digital communication. This study aims to explain how symbolic appropriation and digital communication strategies are integrated in constructing the narrative of "Yogyakarta, a Tolerant Province." This study uses a qualitative approach with a Critical Discourse Analysis model modeled after Norman Fairclough. Data were obtained from policy documents, press releases, and official digital media content of the local government representing religious, cultural, and interfaith public communication activities. The analysis was conducted interpretively, combining James O. Young's theory of cultural appropriation with José van Dijck's concept of digital culture. The results show that the narrative of tolerance is constructed through the integration of five forms of appropriation: content, motif, object, style, and subject, which are systematically curated and circulated through digital platforms. Cultural and religious symbols are not merely represented as social facts but are also managed as symbolic capital to construct Yogyakarta's political cultural identity. Several public indicators, such as the high community participation in interfaith activities and the achievement of a tolerant city index that places Yogyakarta in the high category, also help strengthen the legitimacy of this narrative of tolerance. These findings suggest that tolerance operates as a result of hegemonic symbolic digital orchestration, functioning as a collective identity, policy legitimacy, and regional branding strategy. This study makes a theoretical contribution by expanding the study of tolerance from the normative realm to a critical analysis of power relations, symbols, and digital platforms in the context of public policy.

Abstract

This study examines the patterns of Al-Qur’an text use in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) learning in five public primary schools in South Buton Regency, the obstacles to its implementation; and its contribution to students' understanding of Islamic teachings, the formation of religious character, and religious literacy. The study employs a qualitative approach with a collective multi-site case study design in Grade V classes. Data were collected through non-participant classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with IRE teachers and students in each school, and a review of learning documents. Data were analyses thematically through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing–verification (with explicit comparisons of patterns across sites. The findings reveal three main themes: (1) relatively consistent patterns of Al-Qur’an text use across the five schools—including devotional opening routines, selection of verses aligned with the lesson topic, and guided reading/tajwid practice—with variations in intensity and in the schools' religious programmes; (2) similar pedagogical and structural constraints, such as limited time allocation, diverse levels of Al-Qur’an reading ability, limited media and contextual resources, and difficulties in facilitating the applied understanding of verses, which are further shaped by differences in facilities and local religious ecosystems; and (3) contributions to the strengthening of conceptual understanding of IRE, the internalisation of values and religious habits, and the development of students' religious literacy, with comparatively more substantial outcomes in schools that have additional religious programmes and strong parental support. These findings underscore the importance of differentiated instruction in Al-Qur’an reading ability, the strengthening of learning media, and school–parent collaboration tailored to each school's context so that Al-Qur’an text use does not stop at recitation but leads to meaningful understanding and more measurable behavioural change.

Abstract

This study examines the effects of the Islamic Wetu Telu syncretism on Fiqh education at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah Babul Mujahidin, which is situated in the Traditional Village of Bayan in North Lombok. The teaching of Fiqh in the madrasah does not occur in a socially neutral environment; it is shaped by the local cultural and religious practices. The aim of this research is to explore how these local values influence students' understanding and attitudes towards religion. A qualitative case study method was employed for this purpose. Data was gathered through observation, in-depth interviews with five teachers and thirty students, as well as an analysis of educational documents. Data analysis was conducted in both descriptive and analytical ways, focusing on the interaction between local religious practices and Fiqh education. Findings indicate that the syncretism of Islamic Wetu Telu significantly impacts students' comprehension of Fiqh, especially regarding ritual worship. Approximately 68% of students reported challenges in grasping worship practices due to discrepancies between family traditions and normative Fiqh teachings, while 57% of teachers observed that students tended to follow the guidance of traditional leaders more than formal instructions. Despite these obstacles, local values such as community cohesion, respect for traditional authority, and social balance serve as positive social capital when applied through a contextual and dialogical teaching approach. The study concludes that the Islamic Wetu Telu syncretism does not necessarily impede formal Islamic education; rather, it can act as an educational bridge if managed in a contextual and dialogical manner. These findings underscore the significance of cultural sensitivity in developing Fiqh instruction within local communities.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the tendency to perceive leisure time (farāgh) in education merely as a break without value orientation, even though empirical studies show that most students spend free time on non-academic activities with minimal educational benefit, such as using gadgets, sleeping, or casual conversations. This article aims to reconstruct the educational meaning of farāgh in the Prophet’s ﷺ traditions (hadith) and its implications for Islamic Religious Education (PAI). A qualitative approach was used through digital library research with a thematic (maudhū‘ī) method applied to authentic hadiths concerning time, deeds, and responsibility. Primary data were obtained from the Al-Bāhits Al-Hadītsī application, and secondary data from peer-reviewed journals, syarh literature, and Islamic education references. Analysis was descriptive-analytical and normative-conceptual using source triangulation among hadith texts, classical commentaries, and contemporary educational theories. Findings indicate four dimensions of farāgh: (1) a divine trust (amānah) for which humans are accountable; (2) a momentum for righteous deeds before life’s obstacles arise; (3) eschatological awareness to be reckoned with in the Hereafter; and (4) a foundation for productivity and beneficial action. Three pedagogical principles emerge: spiritual self-regulation, meaningful productivity, and eschatological consciousness. Farāgh offers a more comprehensive framework than modern time management as it integrates spiritual, moral, and transcendental dimensions. In conclusion, farāgh is not merely leisure but a strategic instrument for cultivating religious character, discipline, and moral responsibility in PAI, expanding education from cognitive transmission toward a time-management habitus oriented toward both worldly life and the Hereafter.

Abstract

The Independent Learning Curriculum also places significant emphasis on developing students' character. Values such as mutual cooperation, integrity, independence, and a sense of social responsibility are instilled through various learning activities designed to reflect real-world experiences. The relevance of instilling educational values in relation to education, particularly Islamic education, is evident in the verse 7 of Surah Al-Anbiya' (The Holy Quran), which has profound implications for instilling these values. Education not only transfers knowledge but also instills the values of rahmatan lil-'alamin (blessings for all the universe). This research is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of how the integration of Rahmatan Lil 'Alamin values can be implemented in Islamic Religious Education (Islamic Religious Education), particularly in strengthening students' national character. The results of this study are expected not only to contribute theoretically to the development of character education studies based on moderate Islamic values, but also to serve as a practical reference for educators, educational units, and policymakers in designing relevant, applicable, and contextual Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning models in accordance with the spirit of the Independent Curriculum. The purpose of this research is to analyze the integration of rahmatan lil 'alamin values to strengthen national character. This type of research is field research, where the key instrument is going into the field to conduct direct observations of a phenomenon.
