Abstract

This study discusses the movements of the Instagram community @toleransi.id in promoting religious moderation through nonviolent campaigns during online radicalism and religious extremism. Instagram is used as a tool to achieve religious harmony. However, the community faces challenges such as digital repression and restrictions on the freedom of religious expression. The research method involves qualitative descriptive content analysis. Furthermore, digital ethnography is used to holistically understand the cultural and social experiences of @toleransi.id community activities in the digital world of Instagram. Data were collected through observation and documentation of digital content published by @toleransi.id from 2019 to 2023. Data analysis involved symbol classification, determination of analysis criteria, and analysis using the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of nonviolent campaigns, networked social movements, and religious moderation. The results show that this community faces semantic and behavioral barriers due to the open autonomy space of the internet. They use tactics such as creative and inclusive digital content, dialogue spaces, intellectual discourse, and Instagram as a campaign platform to influence public opinion and build networks. The findings contribute to the study of social movements and religious moderation by showing how @toleransi.id initiated a religious moderation movement with a nonviolent campaign initiated by the Internet autonomy space

Abstract

This study delves into the intriguing world of "To Pembuni," a revered and enigmatic figure in the beliefs of the Nosu people. "To Pembuni" is known for its hidden nature and mystical traits. Using a nuanced approach through phenomenological research, the goal is to deeply understand the rich experiences and beliefs of the vibrant Nosu community about "To Pembuni." The findings reveal a dual existence of "To Pembuni" in both the real world of Nosu and a unique ethereal realm. This enigmatic presence is believed to occasionally take human form or inhabit dwellings. Its origin stems from regular community members seeking solace from heavy taxation by retreating into the forest. A key highlight is the deep respect and warm connection the Nosu people share with "To Pembuni," showcasing their profound rapport. An interesting theme is the intricate relationship between safeguarding the environment and the mystical bond between the Nosu and "To Pembuni," highlighting the interconnectivity of all life. Additionally, the study introduces the depths of mystical theology through the lens of William Johnston, an erudite Irish Jesuit scholar. Johnston's perspective portrays mystical theology as a discipline revealing esoteric wisdom gained through divine communion, with love as the guiding force. In conclusion, this research offers insights into mystical experiences and their impact on beliefs, underscoring the need for environmental preservation. It invites further exploration of mysticism as a path to harmoniously connect with the divine, championing love and compassion for all creation, echoing William Johnston's mystical theology.

Abstract

Abstract

This research concerns with the effort of the Sakai tribe in maintaining their local wisdom and social characters from generation to the next generation eventhough there is minimum outside social interaction. This research involved 9 key informants spread across 5 villages in Bengkalis Regency. They explained their lives in the Sakai people's village, how they modeled and educated the generations and communities to build a safe and peaceful life. The research findings confirm that in their daily lives, women interact a lot with children and other fellow women around the house. The socially visible modeling of women's behavior becomes an imitative model by their community. Patience, thoughtfulness, saving, restraint, not talkative, not getting angry often, using the mantra of overcoming minor problems, including demonstrating how they should behave into a social education slowly builds generational character and teach them how to survive in even difficult situations. This research concludes that Sakai women with their diversity have a strong role as a catalyst for social education and local wisdom of the Sakai people

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the acculturation of traditional marriage practices within the Tengger community, specifically investigating whether there has been a shift in customary marriage procedures following the introduction of Hinduism. To address this research question, the researcher collected data on two key traditional marriage ceremonies: Walagara and Pewawihan. In Tengger custom, these ceremonies are essential for validating a marriage. Without them, the marriage is neither recognized nor legalized according to customary law. This raises a significant inquiry on whether Walagara and Pewawihan are purely traditional customs or have been acculturated with Hindu values. The findings indicate that while Walagara and Pewawihan remain part of Tengger's heritage, their implementation has changed. Specifically, the prayers recited during these ceremonies now incorporate Hindu elements. The researcher concludes that Walagara and Pewawihan consist of two distinct components: the ritual movements, which align with Tengger custom, and the prayers, which reflect Hindu influences.
