Abstract

Kopyor coconut has the potential to be an export crop native to Indonesia. The low production of kopyor coconut in Indonesia occurs because kopyor coconut cannot germinate conventionally like an endosperm mutation. This is due to the food reserves in the form of fruit flesh in crumb condition (kopyor), so it cannot supply sufficient nutrients for the seed germination process. The only appropriate and effective germination method to obtain Kopyor coconut seeds is in vitro embryo culture. This study aimed to determine the composition of the best culture media types for the growth of Kopyor coconut embryos. The study was arranged using a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design with three levels of media types: M1: Y3 + BA 4 mg L-1. M2: De Fossard + BA 4 mg L-1, and M3: Modified Media (Macro and Micro: Eeuwens, Organic: De Fossard) + BA 4 mg L-1. The results of the study showed that in the germination phase, M1 media was an effective medium for the germination of coconut kopyor up to 16 MST, where there are embryos in phase 4/embryos that swell more (10 embryos) compared to M2 media (3 embryos) and M3 media (2 embryos). After evaluating the planting method, media composition, and replacement of ZPT, the dominant embryos experienced germination, where there were 30% of embryos in the modified media (M3) tended to be higher than other media treatments, but not significantly different

Abstract

Amorphophallus titanum is an endemic flora of Sumatra that was listed in the IUCN Red List in 2018 under the endangered category. Conservation efforts must be undertaken to preserve A. titanum both ex situ and in situ. Additionally, artificial propagation of plants needs to be carried out to obtain seedlings that can be replanted in their natural habitat or conservation areas. Propagation through the rachis cutting method is interesting to conduct because it is considered easier and more cost-effective compared to other methods. This research aims to determine the potential success of the planting media used and the challenges faced in the propagation of A. titanum through the rachis cutting method, conducted at the Pondok Sains Terpadu (POSTER) conservation, Science Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Bengkulu. The planting media used were cocopeat and soil, with 40 samples of A. titanum rachis and 20 repetitions for each planting medium. The research results show that the cocopeat medium produced a higher success rate (15%) than the soil medium (0%). Callus appeared in the 8th week, followed by buds in the 12th week. The leaves experienced decay and drying in the 16th week, but the buds continued to grow until they bloomed perfectly in the 20th week. The failure of rachis cutting propagation using average soil media was observed from the 4th week after planting. Thus, it can be concluded that cocopeat media shows potential to support the propagation efforts of A. titanum through the rachis cutting method. The challenges of this research are influenced by pest and disease disturbances (S. rolfsii, Collembola, and H. haydeniana) due to the open research location, as well as environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light, and pH of the growing medium.

Abstract

his research investigates what students feel during open class as part of the lesson study framework and how this affects their learning experience. A descriptive quantitative method was employed in this study. The primary data were obtained from questionnaires that aimed to understand the factors in three components: students' comfort during lesson study, students' perceptions of teachers' performance on teaching and learning, and students' achievement during lesson study. The participants were 21 tenth-grade students from SMA Negeri 8 Malang, East Java, Indonesia, who took part in a biology lesson conducted through the lesson study approach. The results indicate that most students felt positively charged, with 70% feeling comfortable in open classes, 91% providing positive teacher performance feedback, and 93% feeling they had performed well. This study highlighted how lesson study can help create a reflective and cooperative learning culture that benefits all participants, including the teachers. Lesson study promotes a positive environment in the classroom that students see as conducive for engagement and actual learning through improved lesson planning, classroom management, and instructional delivery. The findings also emphasize the need to seek and find methods to increase student comfort and reduce negative emotions experienced by students during open classes. Future research is recommended to examine the long-term impacts of open-class experiences within the lesson study on students' academic motivation, emotional resilience, and learning outcomes.

Abstract

Saga seeds possess a high protein content, presenting a potentially economical substrate for microbiological medium development. This study evaluated the suitability of saga seeds (Adenanthera pavonina) as an alternative culture medium for propagating Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The objective was to determine whether medium derived from saga seeds could sustain bacterial proliferation at levels comparable to conventional medium. It was postulated that both flour-based and infusion-based saga seed medium would yield bacterial growth statistically indistinguishable from that on Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA). Two formulation methods were examined: a flour-based medium and an infusion-based medium. E. coli and S. aureus were cultured on these alternative media and benchmarked against TSA. Colony-forming units (CFUs) were quantified and statistically analyzed using an independent samples t-test. The infusion-based medium displayed complete solubility with no residue, whereas the flour-based variant showed sedimentation. Colonies on both saga-based media appeared white, circular, and approximately 3 mm in diameter, consistent with those on the control medium. Based on productivity rate standards, both the saga seed medium fulfilled the minimum criteria for a non-selective medium. After adjusting for dilution, E. coli reached 1.06 × 10⁵ CFU/ml on the flour-based medium, exhibiting no statistically significant deviation from TSA. In contrast, the infusion-based medium supported lower E. coli growth at 0.94 × 10⁴ CFU/ml. S. aureus growth on the flour-based (1.08 × 10⁵ CFU/ml) and infusion-based medium (1.04 × 10⁵ CFU/ml) did not significantly differ from the control. The flour-based saga medium offers a promising and effective alternative for cultivating E. coli and S. aureus. Nonetheless, further optimization is advised to improve the flour-based formulation's solubility and visual clarity.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has brought about a transformation in the world of education, which is now leading to the use of technology to enrich the learning process. One of the technological innovations that has great potential in education is Augmented Reality (AR). This study aims to examine the use of Augmented Reality as a learning medium that can improve students' scientific literacy, especially in understanding complex scientific concepts. Another objective is to find out how AR can increase students' interest, motivation, and involvement in the learning process. This finding uses the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, which is carried out by identifying, selecting, and analyzing various previous studies on the application of AR in science learning. Data were obtained from various academic databases such as Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and JSTOR. Clear inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to select relevant findings and make significant contributions to understanding the effectiveness of AR in science education. The results of the literature analysis indicate that the use of AR in science learning can improve students' understanding of abstract concepts and enrich their learning experience. AR provides a more engaging and interactive learning experience, which can increase student motivation and involvement. In addition, AR also supports various learning styles, such as visual, kinesthetic, and auditory, thus helping students understand science materials more deeply and contextually. However, several challenges related to infrastructure, teacher readiness, and costs are still obstacles to implementing AR in schools.

Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the potential of yellow pumpkin peel (Cucurbita moschata) and king banana peel (Musa paradisiaca) as raw materials for bioethanol production, based on the alcohol content produced. The bioethanol production process includes hydrolysis using 5% HCl, fermentation for 7 days with adding nutrients (NPK and urea), and purification through distillation. The research results show that the combination of yellow pumpkin peel and king banana peel, adding NPK, produces the highest ethanol content of 13%. Meanwhile, the lowest content of 4% was obtained from the fermentation of the king banana peel without additional nutrients. The addition of nutrients, particularly NPK, has been proven to enhance the activity of microorganisms in natural fermentation, thereby accelerating the conversion of carbohydrates into ethanol. With the ethanol content produced, the bioethanol from this organic waste can be used practically as E5-type blended fuel without requiring any modifications to vehicle engines. This result shows that fruit peel waste can be an environmentally friendly and economical alternative for renewable energy.

Abstract

Field study is a learning activity that provides authentic experiences to interact directly with animals in an environment. This experience can trigger changes in perspective and internalization of new values, including animal awareness. This study aims to analyze the transformation of students' awareness of animals after participating in a field study. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. The subjects were students of the Biology Education program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak who had participated in a field study in the Animal Taxonomy, Ecology, and Herpetology courses. Data were collected through open questionnaires and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results showed that the field study significantly impacted changes in students' perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors in the context of animal conservation. Through direct interaction with nature and society, the contextual learning process has encouraged students to reflect deeply, reassess old assumptions, and experience personal transformation. Students not only gain a more concrete scientific understanding of endemic species and ecological conditions, but also experience strengthening of the values of empathy, responsibility, and active involvement in environmental issues. This finding aligns with the theory of transformative learning, where the stages of self-examination, critical reflection, and intentional action have been proven to be achieved in the field lecture process

Abstract

Picking the wrong learning model can obstruct the growth of students' competencies. This research seeks to evaluate the efficacy of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model when integrated with the STEAM approach to boost science process skills, creative thinking, and critical thinking among high school students during biology lessons. Employing a quasi experiment with a quantitative method, the study included 65 tenth-grade students from SMA Negeri 9 Makassar, separated into an experimental group (PjBL-STEAM) and a control group (PjBL). Data collection utilized observation forms and written assessments, followed by analysis through N-Gain tests and inferential statistics. Findings indicated that the STEAM-combined PjBL model managed to enhance creative thinking abilities (N-Gain 0.52) and critical thinking (N-Gain 0.50) at a moderate level, although it fell short in sufficiently promoting science process skills, which remained in the good range. The study concludes that incorporating STEAM affects science process skills and creative
