Abstract

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a widely marketed flavor enhancer that is regularly consumed. MSG is toxic to several organs including the small intestine. Previous studies have reported the effects of high doses of MSG; however, these findings are not directly applicable to equivalent human intakes. This study aimed to investigate the effect of MSG on the duodenum in rats administered with human average daily intake (ADI). Twenty-four adult male Wistar rats weighing 150-250 g at the age of 8-12 weeks were divided into four experimental groups (n = 6): normal control group (C), group 1 (0.378 mg/g b.wt), group 2 (0.756 mg/g b.wt), and group 3 (1.512 mg/g b.wt) oral MSG per day for 21 days. Duodenaltissue was dissected and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) for histological examination. Data analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test (p < 0.05). The average height of the villus was calculated for each group: control (1047.40 ± 158.0 µm), Group 1 (850.68 ± 202.38 µm), Group 2 (906.29 ± 416.63 µm), and Group 3 (877.55 ± 154.65 µm). There was a difference in the height of the villi between all groups; however, there was no statistically significant difference compared with the control group (p = 0.384). The control group showed a normal appearance of the duodenal mucosa without inflammatory cells. In contrast, the treatment group showed inflammatory cell infiltration and lacked distinct brush-border structures. Our study showed that administration of MSG at an estimated dose of human ADIresulted in histological damage to the duodenum.

Abstract

The long-term use of Vancomycin and its administration at inappropriate doses still cause uncontrolled physiological side effects, particularly in terms of kidney development and metabolism. This study aims to investigate the effects of Bidens pilosa extract (BPE) on vancomycin-induced acute kidney injury in prepubertal rats. This study employed an experimental research method, randomly dividing 40 female Wistar rats into five equal groups: control/adult (C), prepubertal (P), prepubertal + Bidens pilosa (PB), prepubertal + vancomycin (PV), and prepubertal + vancomycin + Bidens pilosa (PVB). Gentamicin caused kidney damage in both PG and PVB groups. We treated PB and PVB with a single dose of BPE. At necropsy, we collected blood, serum, and kidney tissue for evaluation. The research results showed that the total leukocyte count was higher in PB compared to the others (P = 0.002). Serum urea, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, and total protein levels significantly increased in PB, PV, and PVB compared to C and P. Glutathione levels were low in the serum and kidney tissue of PV, and malondialdehyde levels were high compared to the others (P<0.05). Using BPE in vancomycin-induced acute kidney injury in ovariectomized rats resulted in a decrease in serum creatinine, urea, and malondialdehyde levels in PVB compared to PV, an increase in glutathione levels, and a milder severity of histopathological findings. The conclusion of this study shows that a single dose of BPE partially reduces kidney damage in rats with gentamicin-induced acute kidney injury

Abstract

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) enhances flavor during food processing by providing an umami taste, but its metabolic by-products can cause liver injury. The liver is crucial for the metabolism of xenobiotics including glutamate. Black garlic, derived from fresh garlic (Allium sativum L.) through chemical reactions and heat treatment, may have hepatoprotective properties; however, studies are limited. This study assessed the hepatoprotective effects of black garlic extract (BGE) on MSG-induced liver damage. Twenty-five Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into five groups (n = 5): P0 (negative control); P1 (MSG group), 8 mg/kg MSG for 21 days; and P2, P3, and P4, receiving the same MSG protocol as P1 plus BGE doses of 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight, respectively, for 16 days. After the experiment, rats were euthanized for liver tissue extraction. Although liver weights in the BGE-treated groups were lower than those in the MSG group, the difference was not statistically significant. These results indicated that a BGE dose of 200 mg/kg body weight mitigated MSG-induced hepatic damage. Further biochemical and histological studies are required to elucidate the mechanism of BGE's hepatoprotective action of BGE against MSG-induced hepatotoxicity.

Abstract

Mumps, also known as epidemic parotitis, is a viral infection that affects the salivary glands. This disease commonly occurs among school-aged children and adolescents. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence of mumps in Southeast Asia (excluding Indonesia) reached 8,985 cases in 2022. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Health reported 6,593 cases in 2024. Given these challenges and the high number of cases found in the community, researchers aimed to study the clinical profile of mumps in school-aged children and adolescents in Bulu, Tuban. This research was observational in nature, using a descriptive cross-sectional study design. The findings revealed that male children are at higher risk of contracting mumps, with the highest infection rate observed in the 8-10 year age group. Areas characterized by close-knit living conditions and low immunization coverage reported a higher incidence of mumps. The most common complaint that led patients to seek medical care was cheek pain. Additionally, a significant number of mumps patients were found to be underweight. The most frequently administered treatment involved a combination of analgesic and vitamin.
