Abstract

Objective: This study aim was to determine the factors that influence the adoption of agricultural waste utilization as dairy feed among farmers in Enrekang Regency. Methods: This research was conducted from July to September 2019 in Cendana and Anggeraja Districts, which are the centers for dairy cows in Enrekang district. The number of farmers in these two sub-districts were 261 people or 72% of the total population of dairy farmers in Enrekang district. The number of respondents were 77 who were selected using the simple random sampling method. Data collection was carried out by trained enumerators using a questionnaire. Data analysis used the F test to determine the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable (adoption of agricultural waste utilization) and the t test for the partial test of each independent variable. The mathematical model used was a logistic regression model because the variable adoption of agricultural waste utilization was a dichotomous variable. Results: The results showed that the most common types of agricultural waste used as feed in the dry season were sweet potato leaves and rejected sweet potatoes (50.6%), while in the rainy season it was sweet corn straw (30.6%). The method of utilizing agricultutral waste as feed was: directly given to dairy cattle (53%), withered first (25%), fermented (11%) and mixed with concentrate (11%). Factors that influence the adoption of agricultural waste as feed were the number of lactating dairy cattle (X1), contact with extension workers (X4) and the age of farmers (X5). Meanwhile, the cosmopolite variables (X2), formal education (X3), length of farming (X6) and number of families (X7) did not affect the adoption of agricultural was as feed. Conclusions: To increase the adoption of agricultural waste as feed, the intensity of extension needs to be increased, especially for older breeders with 1 - 3 heads of lactating cattle.

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Mammae Hand Massages (MHM) on oxytocin release, milk yield, and milk quality in dairy cows. Methods: Twelve dairy cows with the following criterion: 5-yr-old, 1st to 9th month of lactation, and average body weight of 390 ± 5.55 kg were used. Cows were assigned in a randomized block design with 4 treatments, i.e T0 (without massage), T1 (MHM for 20 s), T2 (MHM for 50 s), and T3 (MHM for 80 s). Oxytocin release, milk yield, and milk quality were measured accordingly. Results: The data obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that MHM had a very significant effect on milk production (P <0.01) as evidenced by the MHM 50 s treatment obtained the highest average milk production (13.08 ± 3.38 liters/head/day) compared to the MHM 20 s, MHM 80 s and control. MHM (1-1.6 volts) for 50 s resulted in the highest release of oxytocin (0.22955 pcg/0.1mL) at 240 seconds compared to control, MHM 20 s and 80 s. Likewise, the percentage of milk protein content (2.96 ± 0.03) and milk fat content (4.27 ± 0.70) was highest at MHM 50 s.Conclusions: It can be concluded that MHM (1-1.6 volts) for 50 seconds increases the release of oxytocin, milk production, and milk quality in terms of the percentage of milk protein and fat content.

Abstract

Objective: The broiler business with the partnership model has become a choice of society in improving their living. In certain circumstances, however, broiler farmers receive income far beyond their expectations due to declining production, because of some impacts of inefficient input utilization and worse management.  The research, then, aims to estimate the technical efficiency of broiler farming business with an open house system and a partnership business pattern, as well as to analyze the determining factors. Methods: The purposive sampling was employed to identify 80 farmers. In detail, the parameter of production function of the Stochastic Frontier was estimated by using Maximum Likelihood Estimations (MLE) method and Frontier 4.1 program.  Results: The estimated value in the statistic model (γ=0.8634) depicts that the hypothetical result of the production function model was assumedly better, so the production function of Cobb-Douglas was able to explain the existing data related to a phenomenon of the technical inefficiency in broiler business. The calculation result of the value of restriction parameter of LR test was 89.99, was greater than the critical value of the Kodde and Palm Table (=19.384), by the significance level at p<0.01. This means the existing inefficiency effects in the stochastic model. Further, the value of sigma square with the parameter value of 0.0133 was statistically significant by the trust level of 99%, describing that the production variation contributed by technical inefficiency was 1.33%. Conclusions: In conclusion, the value of technical efficiency obtained by broiler farmers under the partnership model in the open-house system was 0.95. Then, the determining variables of the broiler production were feeds, vitamins, medicine, working hours, and the total of electricity. Determinant variables that could reduce technical inefficiency were age, farming experience, and ownership status of lands/cages.
