Abstract

Honey is a valuable non-timber forest product widely consumed by communities, with those living near forests sourcing it both from the wild and cultivation. Jujun Village, supported by the Faculty of Agriculture at Jambi University, received assistance in honeybee farming through the Wira Desa program from the Department of Forestry in 2021. As a new venture, continued support was needed to strengthen its potential as an alternative economic source. This study aims to address the challenges of honey farming in Jujun through three main activities: (1) evaluating and strengthening beehive positioning based on natural forage availability to ensure consistent production; (2) improving group members’ skills in honey production and harvesting; and (3) enhancing packaging to facilitate market access. The program, conducted from March to August 2022, followed three phases: socialization, demonstration, and mentoring. Results showed significant improvements in participants' understanding of honey production, harvesting safety, product quality, and packaging. These advancements are expected to ensure the sustainability of honey farming, providing a stable livelihood for the community, especially honey farmers in Jujun Village

Abstract

This community service program was conducted in Maro Sebo Subdistrict, Muaro Jambi Regency, focusing on raising awareness of legal aid rights for underprivileged individuals involved in criminal cases. The program aimed to enhance the public’s understanding of the legal aid services available to economically disadvantaged suspects or defendants and to increase legal consciousness regarding the use of such rights in resolving criminal matters. Based on Article 1 Point 1 of Law No. 6 of 2011 on Legal Aid, legal aid refers to legal services provided free of charge by authorized institutions to recipients who meet certain criteria. The target group of this program includes community members who are potentially subject to criminal prosecution but lack access to legal assistance. Using participatory education methods such as interactive discussions and legal counseling, the program facilitated knowledge sharing between legal experts and residents. As a result, participants demonstrated improved awareness of their legal rights and the procedures to access legal aid. The program contributes to promoting human rights, strengthening the rule of law, and encouraging inclusive access to justice through grassroots legal empowerment initiatives.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of Instagram as a reference source by journalism students in the digital era. As technological advancements continue to transform communication landscapes, social media has emerged as a critical medium for information dissemination. Using a qualitative research design, data were gathered through questionnaires and interviews with journalism students. The findings indicate that Instagram significantly supports students’ news production processes, primarily due to its accessibility, immediacy, and diverse content. Students are not merely passive recipients of information; they actively engage with and disseminate news obtained from the platform. Furthermore, the study finds that information sourced from Instagram is increasingly perceived as credible and is integrated into journalistic writing practices. These results underscore the platform’s expanding role in shaping contemporary news-gathering behaviors among aspiring journalists, reflecting broader shifts in media consumption patterns in the digital age.

Abstract

Kasang Kota Karang is a village located in Kumpeh Ulu Subdistrict, Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province, where most residents engage in vegetable and fruit farming. However, local farmers face challenges such as suboptimal crop growth and yields, as well as high infestation rates of plant pests and diseases, particularly in red chili cultivation. In response, a community service team from the University of Jambi collaborated with farmers through dialogue and participatory discussions to identify a potential solution: utilizing the abundant fruit and vegetable waste available in the farming area to produce Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) and biopesticides. This program aimed to enhance farmers' knowledge and skills in waste processing technology and to improve their income through the potential commercialization of LOF and biopesticide products. The approach used was Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), emphasizing active engagement of the farming partners throughout the implementation process. Evaluation results indicated a significant increase in farmers’ understanding and technical capabilities, with over 90% demonstrating improved proficiency. The farming partners expressed strong enthusiasm and commitment to applying and scaling up the use of LOF and biopesticides in their vegetable farming practices, contributing to better crop yields, increased income, and improved environmental health

Abstract

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) is one of the leading agricultural commodities in Teluk Village, Pemayung Subdistrict. The local variety, Garuda, is characterized by its large size and high yield potential, typically producing 3–4 seeds per pod. Despite its potential, the commodity is commonly sold only in raw form, limiting its economic value. This community engagement project aimed to empower the Kulo Farmers Group by diversifying groundnut-based products into peanut milk and peanut butter. The program was implemented through the Student Organization Capacity Building Program (PPK Ormawa Tymac), with the university serving as a facilitator of knowledge and technology transfer. Activities included product development, business registration (NIB), intellectual property rights (IPR) facilitation, partnership building, and the creation of a digital marketing platform via Shopee. The Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach was applied to ensure that activities were tailored to the actual needs and capacities of the community. As a result, the farmers gained practical skills in food processing and entrepreneurship, and the value of local groundnuts increased through product innovation. This program demonstrated that academic–community collaboration can enhance local economic resilience. Continued mentoring and market expansion are recommended to sustain the initiative’s impact.

Abstract

This community engagement program aimed to empower rural women from the PKK group in Mendalo Darat Village, Indonesia, through training in aromatherapy soap production using locally sourced citronella essential oil. The program involved socialization sessions, hands-on training, and mentoring to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills. Participants were actively engaged in the entire soap-making process, including formulation, mixing, molding, and packaging. The training improved participants’ technical competencies and increased their interest in home-based entrepreneurship. Additionally, participants were introduced to the use of digital media for product promotion, marking a significant step toward digital literacy and market access. While the program successfully boosted initial skills and confidence, it also revealed a need for further training in business management and sustainable marketing practices. This initiative demonstrates the potential of combining local resources with skill-building to support women's economic empowerment in rural settings. Future programs should include entrepreneurship development and SME partnerships to strengthen long-term sustainability and impact.

Abstract

This community service initiative aimed to increase environmental awareness among residents of Pelayang Raya Village, Indonesia, through a socialization program focused on the establishment of a community-based waste bank. The activity involved 60 participants, including village officials, women’s groups, youth organizations, and traditional leaders. The program introduced key concepts of waste management based on the 3R principles—reduce, reuse, and recycle—while also outlining the operational mechanisms for forming and managing a waste bank. As a result, participants reached a consensus to formally establish a waste bank and agreed to follow up with student-assisted implementation through the MBKM KKN-T program. The project succeeded in fostering collaboration between community stakeholders, raising awareness, and laying a foundation for sustainable waste governance. However, the initiative was limited by its one-time implementation, uneven community participation, and the absence of a formal legal framework. Future programs should include ongoing training, regulatory support, and strategies for waste valorization to maximize the impact. Overall, the activity demonstrated the potential of participatory, community-driven environmental initiatives to build sustainable local systems and support rural circular economy models.
