Abstract

This community service program was designed to enhance the practical skills and economic capacity of housewives in Gunung Tua Julu Village through the production of environmentally friendly herbal soap. The initiative was implemented by students of State Islamic University of North Sumatra as part of academic community engagement and social responsibility. The program combined structured training sessions, hands-on practice, and continuous mentoring to ensure participants fully understood the soap-making process. They were introduced to natural, safe, and locally sourced ingredients such as coconut oil, betel leaf extract, and aloe vera, which are beneficial for both skin health and environmental sustainability. In addition to strengthening technical production skills, the activity increased awareness of eco-friendly lifestyles and highlighted the potential for creative home-based businesses. The outcomes demonstrated that participants were able to independently produce high-quality herbal soap and showed strong motivation to market their products, supporting long-term economic independence and sustainable community development.

Abstract

Batubara Regency, North Sumatra, has significant potential for developing palm oil-based MSMEs through the downstream processing of palm sap into brown sugar. This study analyzes innovations in production processes and business management practices in palm sap brown sugar MSMEs in the region, focusing on two MSMEs in Lautador District. Using a qualitative single-case study approach based on Local Economic Development (LED) Theory and Porter's Value Chain model, primary data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions (FGDs) with 10-15 business actors and stakeholders. Results show that the innovation of a semi-automatic steamer increased production efficiency by 105% (from 22% to 45%), monthly revenue increased by 132% to IDR 5.8 million per unit, and the share of digital sales reached 75% (a 1400% increase). Key obstacles include the lack of halal certification and village road infrastructure. Recommendations include facilitating BPDPKS (Indonesian Palm Oil Development Agency) for production equipment and certification, as well as establishing a joint production house. This study contributes to the literature on palm oil downstreaming and sustainable LED strategies.

Abstract

The Village Development Planning Meeting (Musrenbang Desa) is a crucial tool for village development planning, involving community participation. However, in reality, women's participation in the Musrenbang Desa remains relatively low and tends to be seen as merely symbolic, resulting in women's hopes and needs not being fully addressed in village development plans. This situation highlights the importance of measures to improve women's capabilities and empower them so they can contribute actively and significantly to the village development planning process. This community service activity aims to strengthen women's knowledge, awareness, and involvement in the Musrenbang Desa, which took place in Herlang District, Bulukumba Regency. The method used in this activity was an educational and participatory approach, encompassing preparation, outreach and education, participatory discussions, mentoring, a Musrenbang Desa simulation, and assessment and reflection. Participants in this activity consisted of women representatives from various villages in Herlang District, including PKK cadres and local women's leaders. The results of this activity demonstrated an increase in women's understanding and confidence in expressing opinions and drafting proposals for village development. Women were able to identify key issues related to social welfare, basic services, and economic development. Furthermore, this event created an opportunity for more open dialogue between women and the village government. Therefore, this Community Service activity plays a role in strengthening women's participation and supporting the creation of fair, democratic, and gender-equal village development planning.

Abstract

This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to study and implement the role of banners as a promotional medium in increasing consumer attractiveness in MSME stalls in Bandar Malela Village. The main problem faced by MSME actors is the limited understanding and use of visual promotional media, so that the market potential has not been optimally exploited. The implementation method includes the observation stage, designing banner designs, installing in strategic locations, and assisting stall owners. The results of the activity show that the use of banners with attractive and informative designs is able to increase the visibility of stalls, foster interest in consumer visits, and build a more professional business image. Thus, banners have proven to be an effective, practical, and economical promotional medium for MSMEs in rural areas. This activity contributes to increasing the competitiveness and sustainability of stall businesses in Bandar Malela Village, as well as providing inspiration for the development of simple but significant impact promotion strategies for MSMEs in rural areas.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have a strategic role in supporting the village economy through the utilization of local potential. However, MSMEs in Sukatepu Village still face obstacles in product quality and marketing that tend to be conventional. This community service activity aims to improve the quality and marketing of typical products of Sukatepu Village MSMEs through  the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The implementation stages include problem identification, counseling to improve product quality and hygiene, branding and packaging assistance, and social media-based digital marketing training. The results of the activity show that there is an increase in the knowledge and skills of MSME actors in the process of production, packaging, and marketing of products. MSME products have experienced positive changes in terms of quality and packaging appearance, as well as a wider marketing reach through the use of digital technology. These findings confirm that strengthening the capacity of MSMEs through a participatory approach can be an effective strategy in increasing the competitiveness of local products while supporting sustainable village economic development.

Abstract

The digital economic transformation has expanded public access to technology-based financial services such as digital wallets, mobile banking, and online loans. However, this expansion of access has not been matched by adequate digital financial literacy, especially in rural areas, thereby increasing the risk of household economic vulnerability. This community service activity aims to improve the digital financial literacy of the people of Sukatepu Village through education, socialization, and participatory assistance. The method used is a descriptive approach with stages of observation, material delivery, interactive discussion, and qualitative evaluation. The results show an increase in the community's understanding of the concept of fintech, the risks of illegal online loans, and more rational digital financial management. Economically, this activity contributes to changing the community's financial behavior from consumptive to productive. Digital financial literacy has proven to be an important foundation in strengthening the economic resilience of villages in the digital era.

Abstract

People with visual impairment face barriers in cash transactions, particularly in identifying banknote denominations and verifying authenticity, which may reduce independence and increase the risk of fraud. This community service program aimed to strengthen users’ competence through individual, home-based education and mentoring on an optical–UV banknote denomination and authenticity detector with accessible feedback. The program was implemented in collaboration with PERTUNI and ITMI, Kebumen Branch, during October–December 2025. The intervention comprised: (1) needs mapping and baseline assessment, (2) structured training using a concise learning module, (3) hands-on practice using real-world transaction scenarios, and (4) follow-up mentoring. Outcomes were evaluated using a pre–post knowledge test, a practical performance checklist, and a usability/satisfaction questionnaire. The results indicated an increase in the mean knowledge score from 55.1 to 80.7 (Δ = 25.6 points; 47.0% improvement) and an improvement in successful denomination-identification task completion from 60.7% to 90.0%. This approach is relevant for individualized mentoring programs when group-based training is difficult to implement due to accessibility constraints.

Abstract

Literacy is a crucial protective factor in building children’s resilience, particularly for those living invulnerable and marginalized environments. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a local-based literacyapproach as a community empowerment strategy to enhance children’s resilience. The research employs a casestudy approach focusing on the implementation of literacy programs in several communities with high levels ofsocio-economic vulnerability. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews withstakeholders, and document analysis related to literacy interventions that have been implemented. The findingsindicate that the implementation of local-based literacy programs has a significant impact on children’sdevelopment and the surrounding community. These literacy initiatives not only improve children’s reading andwriting skills but also encourage the creation of a more supportive learning environment within families andcommunities. In addition, literacy activities based on local wisdom help strengthen cultural values, increasecommunity participation, and foster children’s self-confidence. Children also develop essential life skills such ascommunication, critical thinking, and collaboration with their peers. These findings demonstrate that local-basedliteracy plays an important role in strengthening community social networks, increasing awareness of children’srights, and creating safe spaces for child development. Therefore, integrating literacy programs into childprotection policies and community empowerment initiatives is a strategic step toward building a sustainable andsupportive ecosystem for optimal child growth and development.

This location has unique and diverse characteristics, making it an interesting research location for its relationship to community empowerment through entrepreneurship. Mojorejo Village is known for its potential natural resources and ancient local culture, which can be utilized for business development and innovation. The implementation method uses mentoring techniques using a participatory approach, skills training, monitoring and evaluation, group discussions, individual approaches, facilitating financial access, and providing technical assistance. The program's implementation results indicate that social entrepreneurship mentoring can improve the community's knowledge, skills, and awareness in managing businesses based on local potential.
