Abstract

Misconceptions in mathematics persist as a problem in teacher education, often rooted in unresolved cognitive conflicts. This study aims to explore how cognitive dissonance contributes to the formation and persistence of mathematical misconceptions in a prospective mathematics teacher. Conducted at a private university in Malang, Indonesia, this research employs a qualitative case study design with one participant, purposefully selected based on prior conceptual errors. Data were collected through task-based assessments and semi-structured interviews, and were then analyzed thematically. The findings show that the participant exhibited stable misconceptions in key mathematical areas, particularly when encountering information that challenged prior beliefs. Rather than adjusting or restructuring incorrect knowledge, the participant displayed psychological resistance through justification, minimization, and selective attention to confirming evidence. These mechanisms serve to reduce internal discomfort (dissonance) without engaging in conceptual change. As a result, the erroneous mental model is maintained despite exposure to correct information. This highlights the critical role of cognitive dissonance in reinforcing misconceptions through defensive cognitive strategies.

Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as difficult and abstract by students, especially when learning materials are not connected to their daily lives. This is particularly relevant for indigenous students, whose cultural and environmental contexts are rarely represented in conventional textbooks. This research developed contextual mathematics learning worksheets that integrate natural elements and local culture to support indigenous students’ numeracy and literacy in Merauke. The study employed a four-D development model: define, design, develop, and disseminate. The methodology involved field observations, curriculum analysis, expert validation, and classroom trials in selected elementary schools. The resulting learning material took the form of student worksheets featuring culturally relevant topics, such as calculating area and volume through local tools and traditional activities. Expert assessments rated the materials as highly appropriate in both content and media aspects. Furthermore, the implementation showed significant improvement in students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. The paired sample t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores. The normalized gain score of 0.28 placed the improvement in the medium category. These findings suggest that context- and culture-grounded learning materials can enhance the relevance and effectiveness of mathematics education for indigenous learners.

Abstract

Deep learning has emerged as a transformative pedagogical approach that emphasizes mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning experiences. In the context of chemistry education, this approach encourages students to connect scientific concepts with real-life situations and to develop higher-order thinking skills aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of the deep learning approach in chemistry education through the Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) evaluation model. A qualitative evaluative design was employed, involving classroom observations, document analysis, and interviews with teachers and students. Data were analyzed inductively to capture the processes, impacts, and challenges of deep learning implementation in school settings. The findings indicate that the principles of deep learning, though not yet formally institutionalized, have been partially applied in chemistry instruction. Teachers and students demonstrated positive engagement in connecting learning materials to real-world contexts. The learning environment supports active participation and enhances students’ conceptual understanding and motivation. However, challenges remain, including limited teacher training, time constraints, and varying student competencies. The study concludes that deep learning holds strong potential for improving the quality of chemistry education when supported by professional development, institutional facilitation, and curriculum alignment. Effective implementation of this approach can further realize the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum and nurture students’ critical and creative capacities.

Abstract

The values embedded in the Menara Kudus culture in Indonesia emphasize the preservation and development of local traditions. One way children express their understanding of local culture is through artistic activities, particularly drawing. This study aims to narrate and measure children's artistic experiences in creating drawings themed on the Menara Kudus, using cultural evidence from its historical legacy as a learning resource. This study employed a mixed-methods sequential exploratory design. The initial qualitative phase involved interviews, observations, and documentation to explore children aged 9 to 12's artistic experiences. The subsequent quantitative phase applied descriptive statistics to support and measure the findings from the qualitative data. All qualitative data were analyzed using an interactive model. The results show that children produced drawings of the Menara Kudus based on their personal experiences and interests, with artworks displaying varying levels of precision, imagination, and creativity. The creative process was found to consist of three phases: pre-creation (encompassing both direct and indirect experiences), creation (encompassing tool preparation, technical mastery, time management, and effective communication), and post-creation (encompassing self-confidence and interpretation). The overall mean score for the artistic experience was 119.43, with mean scores of 22.57, 80.95, and 15.91 for the pre-creation, creation, and post-creation stages, respectively. The findings indicate that children's involvement in the visual arts themed on Menara Kudus is categorized as moderate. It is therefore recommended that children's skills in capturing the original form of objects be enhanced.

Abstract

This study originates from the issue of weak human resource development (HRD) among productive teachers in Palu City, characterized by an imbalance between the number of productive teachers and the ideal needs, resulting in a heavy workload that diminishes motivation for self-development. The comfortable status of teachers as civil servants and their financial stability through regular salaries and professional allowances further weaken both internal and external incentives to improve competencies. In contrast, the absence of economic incentives, rewards, or sanctions related to professional development activities reduces teachers’ commitment to responding to the evolving demands of vocational education. The study aims to analyze HRD among productive teachers using Swanson’s theoretical framework, which consists of three levels of analysis: individual, process, and organizational. A qualitative approach is employed to understand how individual motivation, capacity, readiness to develop, learning processes, and organizational policies influence teachers’ competency development. The findings indicate that the application of Swanson’s framework has not operated effectively due to fundamental weaknesses at the individual level, which hinder the optimal functioning of learning processes and organizational support. Overall, HRD among productive teachers in Palu City has not aligned with Swanson’s principles, highlighting the need for policy interventions in teacher staffing, strengthened professional development incentives, and the cultivation of an organizational culture that promotes continuous learning.

Abstract

The lack of creative expression space that is able to integrate literary aesthetic values with psychosocial functions, especially in building emotional balance and social interaction for people with mental disabilities, is an urgent issue in this study. The purpose of this study is to examine and develop the utilisation of digital pantun as a form of ecocriticism and literature criticism, as well as an imagination therapy medium for people with mental disabilities. The relationship between humans and nature, as expressed through ecological symbols and the imagination in the pantun, makes ecocriticism relevant to this research. The research method uses an interpretative qualitative approach with eco-critical analysis of digital pantun texts, as well as participatory observation and in-depth interviews to see the impact of the application of digital pantun in imagination therapy activities at the Muria Jaya Social Service Centre (RPSDM) Muria Jaya Kudus Regency. Research results show that digital pantuns infused with ecological imagination can be a fun means of expression, facilitating social communication among beneficiaries and building simple environmental awareness through poetic language. The integration of eco-criticism and imagination therapy forms an innovative model that not only strengthens the academic study of literature but also makes a real contribution to improving the quality of life for people with mental disabilities. This study confirms that literature, especially pantun, has social and therapeutic transformational power when contextualised in digital space and inclusive practice.

Abstract

Difficulties in understanding mathematical concepts remain a major problem among elementary school students, particularly when learning is dominated by conventional teaching methods that limit critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in improving fifth-grade students’ mathematics achievement while controlling for numerical ability as a covariate. A quasi-experimental design with a single-factor independent groups design using covariates was employed. The participants consisted of 74 fifth-grade students from Gugus 5 Bima, comprising 37 students from SDN 1 Baluk as the experimental group taught using PBL and 37 students from SDN 2 Banyubiru as the control group taught using conventional methods. Data were collected using validated and reliable tests of numerical ability and mathematics achievement, and analyzed using ANCOVA after meeting the assumptions of normality, homogeneity, and linearity. The results indicate that students taught using the PBL model achieved significantly higher mathematics scores than those taught using conventional methods (F = 47.334, p < 0.05). Furthermore, after controlling for numerical ability, the PBL model remained significantly more effective in improving students’ mathematics achievement compared to conventional instruction (F = 14.135, p < 0.05). In conclusion, the PBL model is effective in enhancing elementary students’ mathematics achievement and can be recommended as an instructional approach to support deeper conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of music, especially songs, in elementary school learning, which not only serves as entertainment but also functions as a pedagogical medium that supports the learning process and the formation of students' character. The purpose of this study is to analyze how music arts teachers use songs in their teaching and to examine the interaction among habitus, cultural capital, and the school arena in music education practice. The research uses a qualitative, case study design following the Creswell model, conducted in SD Jakarta Timur Region II during the 2025/2026 semester, with music teacher subjects selected through purposive sampling. Data was obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies, then analyzed qualitatively through the stages of data reduction, presentation, and verification. The results showed that the interaction among habitus, cultural capital, and curriculum demands influenced teachers' song choices in elementary school music learning. The teacher's personal habitus and experience encourage the use of both traditional and popular children's songs, while institutional cultural capital emphasizes national and thematic songs. On the other hand, contemporary social dynamics open up space for teachers to adopt songs from digital media to be more in tune with students' world.

Abstract

Hindu religious education in elementary schools often remains normative, providing limited space for critical dialogue, even though the teachings of Catur Guru contain essential values for shaping students’ character. This study emphasizes a pedagogical discourse analysis of the implementation of the SUWINDIA model, which is integrated with the Hindu epistemology of Catur Pram??a. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach within Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework, encompassing the dimensions of text, discourse practice, and social practice. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis of Catur Guru textbooks. The findings reveal that, at the textual dimension, teachers employ religious vocabulary, metaphors, and cohesion to instill spiritual values; at the level of discourse practice, teacher–student interactions recontextualize the values of Catur Guru through discussion, instruction, and reflection; whereas at the level of social practice, learning functions as a medium for the internalization of devotion, discipline, and spiritual awareness. The implementation of SUWINDIA is shown to align with Catur Pram??a, as it encourages students to learn through direct experience, reasoning, analogy, and sacred teachings. This study contributes to the development of Hindu religious education models that are more dialogical, reflective, and applicable in primary education
