Abstract

The low level of public understanding about historical and architectural values of historical areas in both urban and rural areas often leads to neglect or even destruction of cultural heritage. This community service activity aims to increase public awareness of the importance of architectural and urban conservation through a service learning approach in the form of advocacy based on popular scientific writing in online media. To this end, the implementing team compiled and published four popular scientific articles that discuss conservation issues in communicative language and are tailored to the characteristics of general readers. The implementation method consists of three main stages: preparation (collection of materials, writing training), preparation and correction of articles, and publication and dissemination through various digital media. The results of the activity show that this strategy is able to reach a wider audience, encourage public discussion, and raise new awareness of the importance of preserving urban architecture. This activity also succeeded in positioning academic knowledge as an integral part of the media-based social advocacy movement. In the future, a similar approach is recommended to be expanded in scale with policy support and cross-sector collaboration.

Abstract

Indonesia produces 67.8 million tons of waste annually, with 60% being organic. Proper waste management is essential to mitigate health and environmental risks. Eco-Enzyme, discovered by Dr. Rosukon Poompanvong, is an innovative solution made from organic waste, sugar, and water. It serves multiple purposes, such as cleaning and fertilizing. A workshop for the youth at YAKESMA Aceh aims to teach them how to create Eco-Enzyme soap from organic waste, fostering environmental awareness and creating economically valuable products. The results of the workshop have been very beneficial to many parties, successfully educating the youth of Yakesma Orphanage (Yayasan Kesejahteraan Masyarakat Aceh) in utilizing organic waste to create eco-enzyme soap, which has economic value, practicality, and is environmentally friendly. This workshop also had a positive impact on the participants by enhancing their knowledge and skills in turning organic waste into eco-enzyme soap.

Abstract

Earthquakes, a disaster that often occurs in Indonesia, are caused by the movement of tectonic plates. Indonesia is a region located at the meeting of three active plates, namely, Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Pacific, which gives Indonesia a high level of vulnerability to earthquake disasters. Banda Aceh is one of Indonesia's regions with a high vulnerability to earthquake disasters, so awareness of disaster mitigation is needed early on. Children have a higher level of disaster vulnerability than adults because they can still not control and prepare themselves for disasters. One effort that can be made to increase children's knowledge about disaster mitigation is to conduct disaster outreach. The outreach aims to increase children's understanding of the dangers of earthquakes, evacuation steps, and first aid that must be carried out to reduce the impact of disasters. Socialization includes interactive presentations, discussions, and evaluations to measure students' understanding of disaster material. The sample for this socialization was 25 grade IV students and 31 grade VI elementary school students. Data collection will use tests in the form of questions about earthquakes to measure the results of students' knowledge of disaster mitigation and compare their understanding of class IV and class VI students. The results of the socialization show that the level of understanding of class VI students is higher in understanding the material provided; around 90% of class VI students and 82% of class IV students understand the material that has been provided; this number has increased from before the disaster socialization was carried out.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out in Lampulo Village, specifically in T. Teungoh Hamlet, Banda Aceh City, to identify the condition of habitable houses and analyze the factors influencing housing quality in coastal communities. Lampulo is a densely populated area where most residents work as fishermen, and it continues to face challenges such as limited space, deteriorating building quality, and inadequate access to sanitation and clean water. The program was implemented through stages of coordination with village officials and related agencies, field observations of housing and environmental conditions, and public hearings with community members to verify findings and gather local perspectives. The results of the identification show significant variations between habitable and non-habitable houses. Habitable houses generally have solid permanent structures, reliable access to clean water, adequate sanitation, and sufficient space in line with the minimum standard of 9 m per person. In contrast, non-habitable houses are characterized by structural damage, poor ventilation and lighting, inadequate sanitation, and high occupant density. Beyond physical conditions, socio-economic factors, housing ownership status, and land legality also play a crucial role in determining housing habitability. These findings highlight the importance of housing quality improvement strategies in coastal areas that not only focus on building standards but also address socio-economic conditions and land tenure security. This community service program is expected to serve as a foundation for local governments and stakeholders in formulating sustainable policies for improving coastal settlement environments.

Abstract

Most of the residents of Lampeudaya Village, Darussalam District, Aceh Besar Regency, work as farmers. These farmers, particularly those growing jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis), face the problem of low soil fertility, which impacts production. This community service activity aims to provide scientific and practical solutions to the problems faced by farmers particularly concerning low soil fertility and limited knowledge of appropriate technology. The partners involved in this program were 25 active farmers highly motivated to improve crop yields through environmentally friendly technological approaches. The implementation methods included in-service training (IST) and on-service training (OST) using a participatory approach, encompassing theoretical sessions, hands-on practice in producing biochar from rice husks, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests. The results of the activity showed a 45% increase in participants' knowledge and a high level of satisfaction with the content and delivery methods. Most participants began producing and applying biochar independently on their farms. This activity successfully enhanced the farmers technical capacity, ecological awareness, and economic potential. The activity recommends continued mentoring programs to ensure the sustainability of biochar production and its application in sustainable farming systems. This training model can be replicated in other areas with similar characteristics.

Abstract

This community service project focuses on disaster advocacy in Aceh, Indonesia, by drawing lessons from Japans experience with Mount Fuji. The subject of dedication is the local community and university students in Banda Aceh, particularly those with limited knowledge and preparedness regarding the volcanic hazards of Mount Seulawah. The aim of this program is to raise disaster literacy, strengthen awareness, and encourage proactive preparedness through an innovative advocacy model that combines technology and cultural approaches. The methodology of this program involved several stages: information gathering and literature review about Mount Seulawah and Mount Fuji; team discussions and planning to design advocacy content; interactive media displays such as VR application MSeulawah, 360-degree videos, banners, brochures, and cultural arts; and public advocacy conducted during the Bunkasai Festival at Syiah Kuala University. Tactics included the use of cardboard VR for immersive experiences, video screenings, interactive games to test disaster knowledge, and cultural elements such as Japanese art and traditional games to increase community engagement. The outcomes demonstrate that the integration of technology and cultural strategies was effective in attracting participation, especially among students. Visitors reported an increase in knowledge and awareness of volcanic risks, while the interactive media successfully enhanced retention and engagement. This initiative highlights the potential of hybrid advocacy models to strengthen community resilience and suggests the establishment of a Seulawah Museum as a long-term educational platform.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out to evaluate the application of the green building concept in the LLDIKTI Building Region XIII, Banda Aceh. The background of this activity is based on the need to encourage efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable building management set by the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI). The implementation method employs a participatory approach, incorporating technical field observations, interviews with building managers, and a review of administrative documents. The primary instrument used is the Greenship Rating Tools for Existing Buildings (EB) version 1.1, which encompasses six assessment categories: Appropriate Site Development, Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Water Conservation, Material Sources and Cycles, Indoor Space Health and Comfort, and Building Environmental Management. The results of the activity showed that the LLDIKTI Building had a relatively good score in the aspects of land management and interior comfort, but was still weak in the categories of energy efficiency and water conservation. This analysis provides an overview of the building's position in green building standards as well as strategic recommendations for improving sustainable management. Thus, this activity not only produces technical evaluations but also provides knowledge transfer to partners regarding the importance of applying green building principles.
