Abstract

This study examined instructor presence in the context of online learning in Ghanaian higher education by focusing on the post-COVID-19 virtual teaching environment. Grounded in the Community of Inquiry framework, the study specifically examined how instructors create teaching, cognitive, social, and emotional presences that foster students’ engagement in the online learning environment. We collected data from 404 postgraduate students using a self-administered online questionnaire comprising 39 items. We used Latent Profile Analysis to classify instructors into four groups: novice, intermediate, promising, and ideal, based on their ability to create these presences.  The results indicate that the dominant presence is teaching, but barriers such as low technological readiness and digital literacy make the cognitive and social presences less evident. The results also indicate that emotional presence, which strongly correlates with other presences, is the second most important presence the instructors created. The students' perceptions of the instructor's presence did not vary based on their gender, suggesting that the instructors' proficiency in online teaching is comparable, potentially enhancing the uniformity of the learning experience across various student groups. This paper underscores the need for faculty development that addresses training on technology-enhanced pedagogy and emotional intelligence for online teaching. Specific recommendations relate to targeted support for instructors teaching online courses, the development of technological resources, and support for enhancing cognitive and social presences in virtual classrooms.

Abstract

Given the increasing need for skilled labor and persistent concerns regarding the employability of Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) students, this study examined the work readiness of Senior High School (SHS) TVL students in a School Division in Region 02, Philippines, and investigated how factors such as gender, academic strand, possession of NC II certification, and work immersion duration influence their preparedness for the workforce. Employing a descriptive-causal comparative design with a one-shot survey method, data were collected from 330 TVL students and 108 teachers using a validated 60-item questionnaire that assessed work attitude, technical skills, social skills, and organizational awareness. Student self-assessments were compared with teacher evaluations to identify discrepancies in perceived work readiness. Results revealed that both groups rated overall work readiness as low, with students’ self-ratings consistently exceeding teacher evaluations; significant differences were observed across all dimensions. While gender and academic strand did not yield significant differences, students possessing an NC II certification reported significantly higher work readiness across all dimensions. Furthermore, although variations in work immersion duration did not significantly affect overall readiness, notable differences emerged in technical skills and organizational awareness. These findings offer vital insights for educational stakeholders and policymakers, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to enhance TVL students’ readiness for the workforce and ultimately improve their long-term employability.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of two questionnaires used in drug education in Malaysian secondary schools: Teachers' Self-Efficacy (TSE) and Teaching Competency (TC). The questionnaires, originally in English, were translated into Malay for participants, who included 43 secondary school teachers and 9 educational experts from three public universities in Malaysia. The findings showed that items with an acceptance rate above 70% supported the content and construct validity of the instruments. However, experts recommended excluding two TC items for being repetitive and unrelated. The reliability test revealed a Cronbach's alpha of .973 for the TSE and .964 for the TC, indicating both questionnaires' trustworthiness. The study concluded that the TSE and TC are valid and reliable tools for research in drug education. The researchers emphasized the importance of these factors in teachers' drug education effectiveness and recommended that government policy support efforts to enhance teachers' self-efficacy and teaching competency in this area.

Abstract

There are many factors that can reduce the quality of learning in Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren), one of which is mental health issues. Cases such as bullying, juvenile delinquency, and depression among students are examples of problems that need attention to ensure that students have the knowledge to help themselves or others when needed. This study aims to explore the role of mental health literacy and self-stigma in shaping help-seeking intentions among male students at Pondok Pesantren X in Pekanbaru City. Low mental health literacy and the internalization of negative perceptions can lead to poor ability to recognize mental health problems, the development of inappropriate beliefs and attitudes toward mental health issues, and ineffective help-seeking behaviors. Through purposive sampling techniques, 84 male students were selected as research subjects. Data collection was conducted using the TPB Questionnaire, the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS), and the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help (SSOSH). The results of multiple regression analysis showed F = 19.880 (p = 0.00) with an R Square value of 0.329. This indicates that mental health literacy and self-stigma simultaneously contribute to help-seeking intentions with a contribution rate of 32.9%. It can be concluded that male students with good mental health literacy and low self-stigma are more likely to have strong intentions to seek help.

Abstract

This research explored cross-cultural comparisons of three folk tales, Cinderella (Europe), Malin Kundang (Indonesia), and Momotaro (Japan), with a focus on their application in English language teaching. The research aimed to analyze these tales' narrative structures, themes, and moral messages and examine their pedagogical value in fostering cultural awareness and enhancing language proficiency among students. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research applied Vladimir Propp's narrative structure theory to analyze the common patterns and functions across the folk tales. The findings revealed that, despite their cultural differences, the stories shared similar narrative frameworks, such as the hero's journey, confrontation with evil, and the restoration of justice. Furthermore, the thematic analysis highlighted universal moral messages, such as the consequences of wrongdoing, the importance of filial duty, and the values of teamwork and courage. This research demonstrated that folk tales were valuable tools for enhancing English language instruction, offering students linguistic skills and a deeper understanding of global cultural values. The implications for teaching suggested that folk tales could improve cross-cultural communication, promote critical thinking, and provide an engaging method for language learning, making them a practical pedagogical resource.
