Abstract

The main issue faced in Wirun Village is the low level of awareness among the community, particularly children, in practicing Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS) and managing waste wisely, despite the availability of waste collection facilities. To address this issue, a team of students from the Community Service Program (KKN) at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta initiated an educational program on PHBS, combined with a creative learning activity involving the recycling of used plastic bottles. The implementation method consists of three stages: planning, execution, and evaluation. The activities were conducted through interactive education, handwashing practice, waste sorting, educational games, and a painting competition using pots made from used plastic bottles. The results of the activities showed an increase in children's understanding of PHBS and waste management, as evidenced by participants' enthusiasm, their ability to distinguish between types of waste, and good teamwork in the painting competition. Evaluations through observation and games demonstrated that a participatory and creative educational approach significantly enhances children's memory and understanding. The conclusion from this activity is that the educational program successfully achieved its objectives and has great potential for sustainable implementation. It is recommended that similar activities be conducted regularly and involve the participation of parents and community leaders to ensure broader and more sustainable impacts.

Abstract

The availability of clean water is a crucial issue in Jatimulyo Village, South Lampung Regency, particularly during the dry season. Residents face difficulties accessing water sources due to a limited understanding of the subsurface groundwater potential. In response to this problem, a team from the Sumatra Institute of Technology (ITERA) conducted a community service activity aimed at mapping this groundwater potential. This activity utilized the geoelectric resistivity method to identify subsurface structures and determine the locations and depths of potential aquifers for drilled wells. In its implementation, the team collaborated with the local village government and involved participants from the Geophysical Engineering and Petroleum and Gas Engineering Study Programs. In addition to technical surveys, the team also conducted a socialization of their findings and provided education on groundwater utilization. This event, attended by residents, local neighborhood (RT) heads, and village officials, highlighted the importance of proper aquifer identification, well maintenance techniques, and strategies for ensuring water resource sustainability. This initiative received positive appreciation from the village head and residents, who hope the results of the ITERA study can provide a concrete solution to address the challenges of clean water availability in their region.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant problem in Indonesia, with 148.1 million children under five affected globally in 2022. Stunting hinders both physical and cognitive development, with primary contributing factors including inadequate nutrition and caregiving practices. This community service activity aimed to increase fathers’ knowledge about caregiving through a door-to-door approach in Desa Makamhaji. The activity was conducted on December 12 and 16, 2024, following three main stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The results showed an increase in fathers’ knowledge scores from 71.88 to 93.75. Fathers’ involvement, such as playing with their children, was shown to strengthen emotional bonding and help detect early signs of stunting. This educational program effectively raised fathers’ awareness of their important role, particularly in ensuring proper nutrition, maintaining environmental hygiene, and providing psychosocial stimulation. Similar interventions are recommended to continue addressing knowledge gaps in community-based stunting prevention.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that is commonly found in the community and has the risk of causing serious complications if not treated properly. One of the effective non-pharmacological methods to lower blood pressure is (slow deep breathing). However, education and practice of this technique is still limited at the community level. This community service activity aims to increase community knowledge about slow deep breathing techniques as an effort to control hypertension. The method used is education and training directly to the community in Manang Village, Grogol District, Sukoharjo Regency. Evaluation was carried out by comparing the results of the pre-test and post-test of the participants. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in participants' understanding, with an increase in the percentage of correct answers in the post-test compared to the pre-test. Participants also showed high enthusiasm during discussion and practice sessions. This activity succeeded in improving public health literacy related to hypertension management and encouraging sustainable independent habits in slow deep breathing practice. The conclusion of this activity shows that community-based participatory education is effective for improving knowledge and skills in hypertension management. It is recommended that similar activities be carried out periodically and involve local health cadres to maintain program sustainability.

Abstract

From January to mid-June 2025, 23 cases of dengue fever (DHF) were found in RW 01 Cemani Village, which is an increase in cases. The main problem partners face is the lack of understanding and skills among health workers for preventing DHF through simple, environment-based innovations. This activity aims to empower health cadres by providing education and training on making ovitraps as a tool for monitoring and controlling Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. This activity is implemented in three stages: preparation, intervention, and evaluation. The preparation stage included licensing and preparing educational media and practical tools. The intervention stage involved delivering interactive materials, demonstrating ovitrap-making, and providing direct practice in making ovitraps using simple materials in groups. The evaluation stage involved observing ovitrap-making skills, cadre attendance, and pocket book usage independently. The results showed that ≥90% of the cadres attended, 85.7% could recreate ovitraps, and 95% used pocket books during practice. These resu lts prove that participatory training effectively improves cadres' skills and strengthens their capacity as agents of change in the community. In conclusion, the demonstrative method increased the cadres' knowledge and skills in independently making ovitraps. It is suggested that cadres continue.
